Abstract

This study has the purpose to explore the politeness strategies of students in a vocational school, how the teachers and students apply the politeness strategies, and the implication of politeness strategies applied to the student’s good character improvement. Descriptive qualitative research was applied in this study which explored the phenomena of politeness in the teaching-learning process. There were 16 classes which consisted of 464 students of XI grade in one of the vocational schools in Buleleng Bali as the participants of this research. 140 students from the hospitality department and  10 teachers were taken as samples for this study. The sources of the primary input were the teachers’ and students’ interactions in the classrooms which were observed and recorded. Ten transcriptions were collected from the observations of ten teachers observed when they taught in the Tourism Department. These transcriptions then were analyzed and reviewed according to Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory in 1987. This research showed that the vocational students applied some types of expressions such as greetings, thanking, addressing, apologizing, and filling. Some expressions or terms were derived from the daily language, which was applied to soften the students’ and teachers’ interactions. All the expressions were grouped into politeness which is positive and negative. The results of this research could be applied as a recommendation for the teachers and students to make the interaction in the classroom effective. Abstract

Children tend to imitate adults such as teachers, not only in the way the teachers speak but also in the way the teachers think, behave, act, and solve problems. Politeness strategies that the teachers apply could be a way to motivate students to act and communicate politely. This study aims at analysing the positive and negative politeness strategies applied by teachers in early childhood education during the teaching and learning process, as well as analyzing the acts of teachers that threaten the students' negative faces and how the students respond to the teachers' face-threatening acts. The study involved three kindergarten teachers at an international school in Bali as the subjects. The data was collected during circle time activities. Circle time is when the teachers and children gather in a circle to discuss the day’s activities. The finding showed that the kindergarten teachers dominantly and consistently applied positive politeness strategies to motivate the students and build a close relationship between teachers and students during the teaching and learning process, which is 91.2%, compared with negative strategies, which were only 7.9%. Furthermore, there were 52 utterances of face-threatening acts done by kindergarten teachers in the dialogue interaction with their students. It is suggested that teachers consciously choose the appropriate politeness strategies, either positive or negative, to suit the context as well as the objectives of the instruction. To analyze the data, this study underwent some procedures namely to observe both version of the lyrics and find the transformation, then observe and examine the transformation in the short movie adaptation. Lastly, all data is analyzed to confirm the commodification of toxic relationship by observing digital materials related to the issue, including the response on Swift’s YouTube channel. The study finds an expansion of theme in the latest version of the song by adding new lyrics that imply a toxic relationship issue. The toxic relationship issue is confirmed in the short movie adaptation by inserting narrative and cinematographic aspects. As a songwriter, producer, and director, Swift includes the toxic relationship issue in the adaptation work to commodify the trending issue. The commodification is validated by the release of the short movie adaptation on YouTube as social media that can monetize the uploaded content and gain more audiences. Abstract

The objective of this study was to create additional educational resources in English, specifically tailored for students in the 7th grade who have a slower learning pace at the junior high school level. This investigation was conducted at SMP N 2 Ubud. The software incorporates learning activities that are based on problem-based learning (PBL), project-based learning (PjBL), and discovery-based learning (DBL) methodologies. The product was developed using the D&D approach recommended by Richey and Klein (2007). The ADDE procedures encompass the stages of analysis, design, development, and evaluation. The participants in this study consisted of an English teacher and 70 seventh-grade students from SMP N 2 Ubud. The data obtained from the analysis technique is gathered through the means of observation, interviews, questionnaires, and document analysis. The outcome of the analysis technique was followed by the creation of the blueprint for additional material. The plan was utilized in the product development process. The supplemental material was incorporated into the 7th grade course of the Merdeka Curriculum. The evaluation found that the additional material is suitable for the teacher to utilize as educational media for students with slow learning abilities.
