Abstract

Critical reading has been promoted as the objective of the reading activity in English language learning. However, previous studies have reported that reading comprehension still centres on comprehending the literal meaning and puts aside critical reading as part of their language learning activity. One of the ways to examine EFL learners’ critical reading is to enquire into their literary competence. This study, aiming at exploring the EFL university students’ literary competence from the perspective of critical reading, was conducted in one of the Indonesian private universities. The participants were required to write an essay containing their critical responses towards a literary text. Content analysis on the essay of each participant was done to explore their literary competence. The findings reveal that the participants were able to demonstrate their literary competence that felt into three categories, namely: relating the literary text to one’s experience, empathising with the literary text, and situating the literary text in a wider sociocultural scope. The critical stances reflected in each of the literary competence were respectively accomplished through constructing and engaging; dialoguing and engaging; and reflecting and evaluating. EFL learners’ literary competence is reflected on the critical responses they produced, in which they relate the content of the text with wider out-text contexts. In order to promote critical reading ability, EFL teachers can include aesthetic reading and involve literary competence in the reading activity.

Abstract

This study aimed to know the types of code-mixing often used and the reasons for using code-mixing by the beauty vloggers in their videos. Mix methods (qualitative-quantitative) methods are used in this study and focused on qualitative rather than the quantitative approach. This research focused on the phenomenon of code-mixing between Indonesian and English used by beauty vloggers in their videos. Moreover, the data were collected by observing the beauty vloggers' video and interviewing the selected beauty vloggers using the google form. Furthermore, the data obtained were analyzed using the theory of Hoffman (1991), Ho (2007), and Saville-Troike (1986). Based on the data analysis, the result showed that the dominant type of code-mixing used by the beauty vloggers was Intra-sentential code-mixing with a total number of 122 items (59%). Meanwhile, the principal reason underlying code-mixing by beauty vloggers is "because of the real lexical need", where 9 (36%) beauty vloggers have the same rights. However, there were two additional reasons out of Saville-Troike (1986) and Hoffman's theory (1991), namely: wanting to get more audiences and so that when promoting a product, the audience is more interested in the product. Keywords: Code-mixing, Types of Code-mixing, Reasons for using Code-mixing.

Abstract

Character building should be a priority in education, and this present study argues that literature can be a medium for developing students’ characters. This study employs George’s model of library research to synthesize arguments and results of previous studies on genres used in character education, the method used, the values identified in the literary texts used, and the challenges faced during the implementation of literature for building students' characters. The data sources are chosen from reputable international and accredited national journals, closely read, and synthesized to answer the research questions. It is revealed that the genres used by the previous studies for building character values are novels, short stories, children’s stories, films, poetry, folklores, and textbooks. The methods used are story-mediated storytelling, puppet-mediated storytelling, reading comprehension, literature-based instruction, and group discussion. The values identified as teachable through literature are religious, honest, tolerant, disciplined, hardworking, creative, autonomous, democratic, nationalism, patriotism, curious, appreciative, communicative, peace-loving, bibliophilic, environmental awareness, social awareness, and responsible. The challenges faced in using literature for character building are authentic material, time constraints, students' and teachers’ attitudes, proficiency, and critical thinking ability. Thus, the present study recommends using literature for building characters while urging teachers and researchers to find alternatives to cope with the challenges through continuous innovations and research.

Abstract

COVID-19 has been declared a pandemic by World Health Organization (WHO). Coronavirus disease transmission mainly occurs through exposure to respiratory droplets on exhalation and in close contact with COVID-19 patients. For this reason, the local governments in many countries made the mandatory masks, following the guidelines of WHO. Masks become the protective equipment or tool to prevent the spread of COVID-19. However, mask-wearing remains a complicated issue, significantly since US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) relaxed its guidance about outdoor mask-wearing for people who have been fully vaccinated. CNN, as a media, reported that the mask-wearing issue is confusing and causing controversies. This study uncovered the political issue, ideology, power, culture, and economics. After using the Fairclough approach, there are economic and political issues found between the US and China, which affect CDC in making decisions or regulations about mask-wearing.
