According to Holmes’ Map of Translation Studies, two primary research focuses on translation studies, namely pure and applied translation studies which both emerge 16 sub-research themes. Until now, the research on translation studies has been dominated by descriptive translation and translation criticism. Hence, there is still various research theme that can be explored. This study aims to describe the research trends in Arabic translation research in Indonesia between 2011-2021 by applying a systematic literature review method by operating an academic search engine, “Google Scholar,” with certain Indonesian, English, and Arabic keywords.   The result shows that there are 130 articles on Arabic translation research in Indonesia with six research themes: descriptive translation, translation criticism, non-linguistic descriptive translation, theoretical translation, translation aids, and translator training.  The major theme used in research is descriptive translation, while the least used theme is translation training. By describing the chance and challenge of the importance of research in translator training, this article encourages translation studies scholars to do more research in this field.

Abstract

The issue of mental health has been in the spotlight in this decade, and various media have voiced and given their perspectives, including a singer, Hindia, in the song lyrics of their album Menari dengan Bayangan. The songs specifically portray mental health problems that impact persons in their 20s who are experiencing a quarter-life crisis. In order to examine the truth of this hypothesis, a content analysis research method was chosen which was studied using psycholinguistic theory. Dissected 12 songs and 3 skits from people closest to Hindia which are included in the album entitled Menari dengan Bayangan. The results of the study show,1) the album contains the four stages of quarter life crisis, 2) the lyrics of the songs on the album Menari dengan Bayangan define a quarter-life crisis from the lowest to the last stage that can exceed the crisis in early adulthood, and 3) listeners to songs in the album Menari dengan Bayangan responded positively to every lyric contained in it and helped them to get out of the mental crisis they were facing.

Abstract

The role of readers in responding to literary works is very important in determining the quality of literary works in the digital world, such as literary works written in the Wattpad application. Based on this, the researcher conducted research on reader reception of Min 'Ālam Ākhar's novel which was uploaded to the Wattpad application by the username Manjiro57 using Stuart Hall's theory which groups receptions into three categories, namely dominant-hegemonic position, negotiated position and oppositional position. The data in this study were obtained from the comments column on Min 'Ālam Ākhar's novel in the Wattpad application which were collected using the note-taking technique based on a purposive sampling technique. The data found were analyzed using descriptive-analytical methods. This research shows that the dominant-hegemonic position is found more often than the negotiated position or oppositional position. The existence of the dominant-hegemonic position means that this novel is enough to attract the attention of readers. The negotiated position can be a suggestion for novel writers to find out how the storyline that the reader wants. In the oppositional position, the readers provided comments related to several storylines which they think did not make sense.

Abstract

Orientalism is synonymous with the Western male view of Eastern men and women. The discourse of Orientalism is a masculine discourse that rarely portrays women, especially mothers, as subjects of analysis. The problem of this research lies in the Orientalist discourse in the Indonesian version of the novel "Little Fires Everywhere" by Celeste Ng, which is approached from the viewpoint of women, particularly mothers, resulting in a contest to become the best mother. The mothers in this novel are divided into two categories: the West mother, represented by Elena Richardson, and the Orient mother, represented by Mia Warren. This study aims to reveal the contestation between the West and Orient mothers. This research uses a qualitative method, and the theoretical framework used is Orientalism, as proposed by Edward W. Said. This research found latent Orientalism in the West mother's perspective towards the Orient mother, resulting in competition to become the best mother figure. This research also found that both mothers failed to become the best mothers for their children, whether from the West or the Orient.

Abstract

This article aims to explain the construction of Lombok's cultural identity in three Indonesian poems. Cultural identity is considered a continuous production. In that approach, identity is a construct. Identity is constructed through language. Language is understood as a sign system. Therefore, the analysis of poetry uses sign analysis and semiotic analysis. In this analysis, signs can only be understood in the context of Lombok culture, in the context of the conceptual map of Indonesian society in Lombok. Signs can only be found in the cultural context of Lombok. The data were gathered from three different Lombok poems. The research result shows that in Perang Gurantang poems, Lombok cultural identity is different from Bali's cultural identity. Moreover, Di Gili Tak Ada yang Mengenal Pagi and Kemidi Rudat poems reveal hybrid cultural identity. Finally, Lombok cultural identity has a multicultural identity that gives respect to the differences between Lombok and Bali cultures. The acceptance of West and Malay-Islam culture forms Lombok cultural identity.

Abstract

Since the fall of Suharto in May 1998, women's involvement in literature has increased rapidly, causing a rush of feminist themes and content in literary works in this period. However, the literary works of women writers, even female feminists, are still unable to escape the tendency to objectify women. This research will show that in the works of female feminist writers, female characters are still displayed as objects of the reader’s male gaze. Four novels will be studied, namely Perempuan Berkalung Sorban and Geni Jora by Abidah El Khalieqy, and Tabula Rasa and Gadis Kretek by Ratih Kumala. This study is descriptive qualitative. Data collection techniques were carried out using the literature study method, namely by reading carefully and thoroughly the four material object novels. Collected data will be analyzed using the Male Gaze Theory by Laura Mulvey. According to the Male Gaze Theory, women are constantly looked at, watched, and displayed, with a certain appearance that has a strong visual and sexual influence so that they are referred to as to-be-looked-at-ness. The results of this study show that in the four novels, there are two repeated patterns, that consistently place women as objects of the reader’s male gaze, namely (1) the exposure of women's intimate organs in an erotic context and (2) beautiful and detailed descriptions of women's faces and bodies.

Abstract

Royyan Julian’s short story entitled “Di Malam Bulan Darah, Mogut Menyantap Jenazah Orang Kafir” [On the Night of the Blood Moon, Mogut Eats the Body of Infidel] (2019) captures the relationship among different ethnic groups, religions and gender in Madura. Set in Madura Island, the story uncovers more than just relation between Chinese and Madurese people and between female and male characters. This paper is focusing on inter-ethnic and inter-religion relation in the short story. This analysis used qualitative method and data collection used close-reading. Drawing theoretical inspiration from Simone de Beauvoir with a particular emphasis on the Other and Richard Jenkins’ theory on Social Identity, this study reveals how different identities bring different treatment, evaluation, and prejudice which led to othering. Through his short story, Royyan Julian discloses binary opposition related to ethnicities, religions, and gender. The hierarchy and power imbalance imposed on male and female characters in the story bring devastated impact on female character just because she has different identity from the majority of Muslims in Madura.

Abstract

Violence against women through narratives and scenes becomes one of the interesting discussions, especially in the novel adapted into the film Seperti Dendam, Rindu Harus Dibayar Tuntas. This research aims to uncover the representation of violence against women in the adaptation process from novel to film. This research is qualitative with a descriptive method. The approach used in this research is to look at the narrative aspects of the novel, relationships, and correlations of violence against women. Violence against women in film uses the concepts of cinematography, vehicle transfer, and narrative, in building visuals of violence against women. The results of this study show the representation of violence against women through Iteung and Rona Merah. Iteung shows the relationship between her childhood and the formation of masculine character in adolescence. This also shows the ecranisation in the form of reduction in the film. Rona Merah provides an image as an object of sexual violence who experiences psychological disorders as a form of trauma in the past. New media other than film are the caricatures on the tailgate of a truck, which are closely related to the problems of men and women.
