Abstract

Learning in early childhood education (PAUD) in many units still focuses on basic literacy without integrating basic coding concepts. This limitation is caused by the lack of appropriate learning media. This study aims to develop, validate, and evaluate the feasibility of algorithm-based coding worksheets to improve symbol literacy and computational thinking skills in early childhood. This study uses the Research and Development (R&D) method with the 4D model. The research subjects consisted of 3 expert validators (2 material experts and 1 media expert), 2 PAUD teachers as practitioners, and 10 children aged 4–6 years as limited trial users. Data were collected through questionnaires, observations, and documentation with instruments covering aspects of content validity, media design, and practicality. Data analysis was carried out using quantitative descriptive techniques with a Likert scale and qualitative analysis of expert input. The results showed that the worksheet obtained a validity value of 95.8% from media experts, 91.6% from material experts, and a practicality value of 96.4% with a very feasible category. The developed worksheets are effective in helping children understand basic coding concepts such as sequence, pattern, repetition, decomposition, and the encode-decode process. The conclusions of this study indicate that the developed coding worksheets are valid and practical as an innovative learning medium to stimulate symbolic literacy and computational thinking. The implication of this study is that computer-free coding worksheets can be an effective and accessible alternative learning medium in early childhood education.

Abstract

Early childhood critical thinking skills often remain below expected developmental standards due to learning practices that rely on conventional teacher-centered approaches. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of an integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) approach combined with PBL in improving critical thinking skills in 4–5-year-old children. A quantitative method with a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design was used. The study subjects consisted of 20 children divided into an experimental group and a control group. Data were collected through structured observation sheets. Data analysis used descriptive and inferential statistics and normalized gain (N-gain) analysis to measure the level of improvement. The results showed that both groups experienced improvements in critical thinking skills, but the improvement in the experimental group was significantly higher. The experimental group showed moderate to high N-gain improvements, while the control group showed low improvements. Statistical tests also showed significant differences between pretest and posttest scores and between groups. These findings suggest that integrating STEAM with project-based learning provides meaningful learning experiences that support children's active engagement, inquiry, and reasoning processes. In conclusion, the STEAM PBL approach is effective in improving critical thinking skills in early childhood. This study suggests that interdisciplinary and project-oriented learning can serve as alternative instructional strategies for fostering higher-order thinking and active learning in early childhood education.

Abstract

Linguistic politeness is an important aspect of social interaction, yet existing studies still show differing perspectives that have not been comprehensively integrated. Furthermore, variations in culture, social norms, and power relations make politeness practices difficult to understand comprehensively without systematic synthesis. This study aims to analyze previous research on linguistic politeness across various communication contexts. This is a qualitative study with a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) design. The research subjects were twelve selected scientific articles that met the inclusion criteria as study subjects, without direct trial subjects. The data collection method used documentation techniques with a systematically designed data extraction sheet instrument. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of identification, screening, feasibility assessment, and thematic synthesis. The results of the study indicate that linguistic politeness is contextual and influenced by cultural values, social norms, social distance, and power dynamics between speakers, with variations in politeness and impoliteness strategies emerging across the interpersonal, institutional, and digital realms. The conclusion of this study confirms that linguistic politeness is an adaptive social practice and is not universal. The implications of this research include strengthening the theoretical framework of pragmatics, developing contextual language learning, and increasing the effectiveness of cross-cultural and professional communication in the digital era.
