Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of public communication strategies implemented by Hajj and Umrah Guidance Groups (KBIHU) in North Sumatra within the framework of the Hajj implementation policy. While existing research on Hajj services largely focuses on logistics, health, and administrative systems, limited attention has been given to how the state communicates with pilgrims in a manner responsive to socio-cultural diversity and public trust challenges. This study addresses that gap by analysing how information services are designed, delivered, and received in a religious public service context. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis involving Ministry of Religious Affairs officials, KBIHU managers, and Indonesian Hajj Brotherhood Association representatives. The findings reveal that public communication is dominated by one-way dissemination, lacks active involvement of local actors, and suffers from inconsistency in information delivery. These limitations hinder transparency, reduce trust in official channels, and increase reliance on informal sources. The study proposes a more participatory and adaptive communication framework that integrates two-way interaction, cultural sensitivity, and continuous engagement before, during, and after the Hajj season. The theoretical contribution lies in positioning this framework within the Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT), extending its application to a socio-religious public service setting. This approach strengthens state legitimacy by reframing Hajj communication as administrative information delivery and as a trust-building process grounded in accountability, inclusion, and cultural context.

Abstract

This study examines how female preachers in Indonesia cultivate and sustain religious authority in the digital sphere, particularly within a patriarchal context where their visibility and legitimacy remain contested. While online da’wah and personal branding have been widely studied, little research addresses the intersection of gender, charisma, and mediatized communication, especially across multiple platforms. Focusing on Ustadzah Oki Setiana Dewi a prominent preacher active on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Threads, and Facebook. This research explores how Weber’s concept of charismatic authority is embodied and reconfigured online, and how Hjarvard’s mediatization of religion explains these processes. Using qualitative content analysis of 30 purposively selected posts over three months, complemented by non-participatory netnographic observation, the study captures thematic depth and multimodal performance, integrating narrative and visual analysis with media theory. Findings show that Oki's digital charisma is built through emotional storytelling, consistent aesthetic branding, and active audience engagement. This enables her to bypass certain institutional constraints while remaining shaped by platform logics. These results affirm Weber's view of charisma as relational and mediatization theory's emphasis on the media's active role. Limitations include the single case design, the absence of audience interviews, and the restricted timeframe. The study urges religious institutions to engage female preachers, enhance digital literacy, and explore comparative or longitudinal research on women's digital religious authority.

Abstract

This study examines the role of curative da'wah as a psychospiritual intervention in the rehabilitation of drug addicts within an Islamic spirituality-based framework. While drug abuse in Indonesia is increasing, little research has explored how da'wah, traditionally associated with religious preaching, can be adapted into a therapeutic approach addressing the spiritual and psychosocial needs of recovering addicts. The research was conducted at the House of Serenity Rehabilitation Center in Bandar Lampung using a descriptive qualitative approach with an intrinsic case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving 15 participants, including former addicts, spiritual mentors, and program managers. The analysis, guided by the Miles & Huberman interactive model, revealed three main findings: (1) structured curative da'wah sessions combining ritual, reflection, and mentoring; (2) significant changes in participants' spiritual orientation and interpersonal relationships, with 80% reporting stronger meaning in life and no relapse during the study period; and (3) empathetic communication that fosters trust, emotional resilience, and identity reconstruction. These results suggest that curative da'wah can serve as a complementary, context-specific strategy for holistic addiction recovery, with potential application in community-based and spiritually grounded mental health programs.

Abstract

Although previous studies have examined rhetorical strategies in da’wah (Islamic preaching), limited attention has been given to how these strategies adapt to specific local cultures. This study addresses that gap by exploring how Islamic preachers (Guru) in South Kalimantan incorporate Banjar cultural values into their rhetorical practices to enhance message relevance and audience engagement. The study aims to identify the dominant rhetorical styles used, explain how they draw from local wisdom, and assess their communicative impact. A qualitative-descriptive method within the ethnography of communication framework was employed. Data were collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews with preachers and congregants, and sermon documentation. Thematic coding and interpretive analysis were used to link rhetorical patterns with Banjar cultural elements. Findings reveal three dominant rhetorical styles: (1) persuasive-narrative, utilizing local folklore such as Hikayat Datu Kalampayan; (2) religious humor, incorporating Banjar comedic expressions to build rapport; and (3) symbolic-cultural references, invoking values like baimbai (cooperation) and adat basambangan (etiquette in interaction). These strategies reduce social distance, strengthen emotional connection, and improve audience receptivity. The study contributes theoretically by highlighting the cultural embedding of rhetorical forms in localized da’wah. Practically, it offers a model for preachers to contextualize messages effectively. It also suggests integrating cultural adaptation training into preacher development programs.

Abstract

This article examines how social capital prevents and manages religious intolerance and conflicts in Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Departing from the limited attention paid to local community practices compared to previous studies emphasizing state regulation or religious leadership, this study focuses on how bonding, bridging, and linking social capital are operationalized in everyday life. Drawing on Putnam's social capital framework and a qualitative approach, the research employed 20 in-depth interviews, four focus group discussions (FGDs), and document analysis in Ruteng (urban) and Reo (rural), with data triangulation and cross-case comparison to enhance validity. The findings show that symptoms of intolerance are relatively rare. Conflicts such as youth disputes triggered by hoaxes or contestations over places of worship are resolved peacefully through collaborative mechanisms involving religious leaders, traditional leaders, the Interreligious Harmony Forum (FKUB), youth forums, and local government. Cultural norms of kinship, inclusivity, and unity strengthen bonding capital, cross-group dialogues serve as bridging capital, while FKUB's institutional role and government–community partnerships provide linking capital. Theoretically, the study contributes by demonstrating a hybrid model of social capital in Manggarai, where cultural traditions and institutional structures reinforce one another in sustaining interfaith harmony while exposing vulnerabilities such as minority exclusion and dependence on proactive leadership. These findings enrich scholarly debates on social capital and tolerance in plural societies and offer practical recommendations for strengthening interfaith youth engagement, embedding cultural wisdom into institutional forums, and ensuring inclusive representation within FKUB to support broader national efforts.

Abstract

Religious communication in multicultural societies requires approaches that are both ethically sound and culturally sensitive. While da'wah efforts in Indonesia often emphasize textual or dogmatic methods, they frequently overlook the psychological dimensions of communication and the importance of local wisdom. This study addresses that gap by exploring how da'wah ethics and psychological principles can be integrated within the cultural framework of the Banjar community in South Kalimantan. Known for their strong Islamic values and traditions such as ba’iman (faith), ba’adab (civility), and ba’budaya (cultural identity), the Banjar people provide a relevant context for examining localized religious outreach. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach with literature analysis, the study uses a humanistic communication framework that prioritizes empathy, respect, and psychological awareness in message delivery. The findings show that aligning da'wah with Banjar cultural values and emotional norms not only enhances message receptivity but also reduces resistance to religious messages. This integrated approach fosters deeper engagement, strengthens social cohesion, and makes religious communication more relevant to the lived experiences of the audience. The study contributes to the discourse on contextualized da'wah by proposing a model that respects both Islamic ethical principles and the cultural psychology of local communities.

Abstract

This article examines charismatic authority in pesantren-based da'wah, a dimension of Islamic education leadership that remains underexplored. While Max Weber’s concept of charisma has been widely applied in political and organizational studies, its relevance to Indonesian pesantren leadership is rarely addressed. Taking KH Thoifur Mawardi of Daarut-Tauhid, Purworejo, as a case study, this research analyzes how charisma operates as both personal virtue and institutional capital in sustaining transformative da'wah. A qualitative approach was employed through interviews, participant observation, and documentation, with triangulation ensuring data credibility. The study shows that KH Thoifur’s charisma, rooted in moral integrity, Islamic scholarship, and emotional proximity to the community, enables him to mobilize spiritual awareness, social solidarity, and pesantren-based economic initiatives. Although limited to a single institution, the study critically adapts Weber’s notion of charisma to the pesantren context, offering a contextual framework that links leadership, spirituality, and social change. It concludes that effective da'wah must be participatory, human-centered, and sustainable to address contemporary challenges.

Abstract

The implementation of Islamic law in Aceh has often been perceived as restricting the rights of religious minorities and fostering intolerance. In Langsa City, however, the reality of interreligious interaction demonstrates a more tolerant, harmonious, and cooperative communication dynamic. This study aims to analyze the practice of religious moderation in Langsa City by focusing on interreligious communication strategies within the framework of Islamic law. The research employs a phenomenological approach guided by Face Negotiation Theory. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis, and interpreted to identify recurring patterns of communication. The findings show that religious moderation in Langsa is enacted through strategies of face management—maintaining both self-face and other-face—visible in formal arenas such as government programs (Gampong Moderasi), inclusive policies, and interfaith forums, as well as in everyday social interactions. The practice of moderation is sustained by local cultural and religious values, accommodative legal frameworks, interreligious education, and social expectations that encourage harmony. The study concludes that moderation in Langsa is not merely the outcome of regulation but emerges from ongoing interreligious communication and negotiation. The theoretical contribution extends Face Negotiation Theory from intercultural to interreligious communication. At the same time, the practical implication offers a communication-based model of moderation that can guide inclusive interfaith policies in multicultural societies.

Abstract

Although waqf has long been recognised as a powerful Islamic socio-economic instrument, its utilisation in many Muslim communities remains largely consumptive and under-optimised. Existing studies tend to focus on traditional or partial models of productive waqf, offering limited insights into how waqf can be integrated with contemporary entrepreneurial practices to generate sustainable socio-economic impact. This study addresses this gap by examining Wakafpreneur, an innovative and integrated model that combines productive waqf with entrepreneurial frameworks to support da'wah initiatives and wider social transformation. Focusing on philanthropic institutions in Riau Province, Indonesia, this research aims to explore how the Wakafpreneur model is conceptualised, implemented, and experienced by its stakeholders. A qualitative case study approach was employed, drawing on in-depth interviews with waqf managers, participating entrepreneurs, and programme beneficiaries, as well as direct observations of Wakafpreneur business units. The findings demonstrate that Wakafpreneur significantly enhances the effectiveness of waqf management by transforming dormant waqf assets into sustainable business entities. This model not only generates independent financing streams for da'wah programmes but also promotes community economic empowerment through job creation, improved welfare outcomes, and the practical dissemination of Islamic values. The novelty of this study lies in its analysis of Wakafpreneur as a holistic and replicable model that positions waqf institutions as transformative agents within modern socio-economic ecosystems. The study recommends replicating the Wakafpreneur model in other regions as a strategic pathway to optimise waqf potential and strengthen the contribution of Islamic philanthropy to socio-economic development.
