Abstract

Nasakom and Bhinneka Tunggal Ika are Indonesian political terms that Indonesians and foreign researchers and observers know but still contain a lot of unclear understanding. This study wants to answer this ambiguity, by exploring the existence and essence of Nasakom and then linking it to Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, using philosophical methods. The aim is to find a "new reading" about Nasakom. This research found that Nasakom can only be understood properly through a complete reading, which involves three perspectives at once: from the perspective of Javanese cosmology, because Sukarno was Javanese; from the standpoint of Islamic cosmology, because Sukarno was a Muslim; and from a Western cosmological perspective, because Sukarno was also a modernist who adhered to rationalism. Finally, it was found that the essence of Nasakom embodies the spirit of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika and the principle of unity in diversity. Nasakom became politically bad, because one of its elements, the PKI, used the Nasakom stage to prepare the 30 September 1965 Movement. Still, Nasakom, from the purpose of its formation, was an ethical politics that embraced opposing parties.

Abstract

This study investigates the strategies and effectiveness of digital da'wah implemented by the Hijabers Community Medan, emphasizing women's empowerment through new media. Recognizing the urgency of understanding innovative religious communication methods in the digital age, particularly those targeting Muslim women, this research adopts a qualitative case study approach. Employing purposive sampling, eight key informants including community leaders, da'wah experts, and media specialists were selected to provide diverse perspectives. Primary data were gathered through semi-structured in-depth interviews, participatory observations conducted over six months, and content analysis focusing explicitly on the community's Instagram posts from the past year. Data validity was ensured through methodological triangulation, an audit trail documenting the research process, and rich, contextual descriptions. The analytical framework integrated Henry Jenkins' new media theory, Paulo Freire's empowerment theory, and Everett Rogers' diffusion of innovation theory to explore the dynamics of digital participation, empowerment, and innovation adoption within religious communities. Data analysis followed the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model, employing NVivo software for systematic coding and thematic categorization. Findings reveal that the Hijabers Community Medan employs diverse digital strategies such as persuasive storytelling, visually engaging microblogs, and structured messaging via social platforms, fostering active community participation and enhancing women's religious identity. Despite these successes, challenges emerged including internal communication conflicts, inconsistent member engagement, and external misconceptions regarding their ideological stance. Critically, this study identifies the need for deeper empirical evaluation of digital strategies’ impact. The Inclusive Digital Da'wah Model of Hijabers Medan (DID-HM) proposed from these findings requires further validation through extended quantitative and comparative research to ascertain its broader applicability and effectiveness.

Abstract

This article explores the electoral behaviour of Muslim voters in the 2024 Gubernatorial Election of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Indonesia. Motivated by concerns over the political marginalisation of Muslim candidates in NTT’s local elections and the wider discourse on minority political participation, the study adopts a voting behaviour framework that integrates sociological, psychological, and rational-choice approaches. It examines how sociocultural backgrounds, religious identity, economic considerations, and political affiliations influence Muslim voting preferences. The analysis also considers the role of historical voting patterns, political party dynamics, and the influence of prominent Islamic figures and organisations. Set in a Christian-majority province, the study investigates the interplay between identity politics, economic rationality, and political pragmatism. Findings suggest that Muslim voters exhibit a nuanced approach to leadership selection, prioritising democratic values, visionary governance, and service-oriented leadership over narrow religious affiliations. Interview data reveal that qualities such as empathy, populism, decisiveness, and moral integrity—particularly a strong anti-corruption stance—are highly valued. Voters also emphasise the importance of political and administrative experience, while viewing intelligence, religiosity, and military credentials as supplementary advantages. Overall, Muslim voters in NTT seek leaders who combine intellectual competence with emotional proximity to the electorate and a deep commitment to public welfare. This research contributes to the broader understanding of minority political agency in Indonesia and highlights the need for more inclusive political frameworks to promote equitable representation and strengthen democratic practices in multi-religious societies.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the responses of pesantren communities in South Sumatra to the discourse of khilafah, particularly how kiai and santri interpret exclusive and inclusive Islamic texts in relation to religion–state dynamics. The research employed a qualitative method with a critical hermeneutic approach, combining in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation studies in five pesantren across three districts. The findings reveal that the pesantren communities do not perceive the khilafah merely as a political project, but as a discourse negotiated through da‘wah, education, and religious authority. Three major patterns of response were identified: (1) support for the nation-state while internalising Islamic values through da‘wah and education; (2) reflective acceptance of the khilafah as an ideal, but with contextual consideration for Indonesia’s pluralistic reality; and (3) normative rejection of both the nation-state and khilafah based on critical views of political failures. These responses demonstrate the active role of pesantren in shaping Islamic discourse, promoting moderation, and safeguarding national unity. The study concludes that pesantren function not only as educational institutions but also as centres of da‘wah and socio-political negotiation that adaptively respond to transnational Islamic ideologies in contemporary Indonesia.

Abstract

This study investigates da’wah bil hal through religious tourism service innovations at the Sunan Muria Mosque and Tomb Foundation, addressing the limited scholarly attention to how practical service improvements can function as a medium for Islamic proselytization. Using a qualitative descriptive phenomenological approach, the research captures the lived experiences of pilgrims to explore how specific innovations shape their spiritual engagement, sense of comfort, and overall safety during visitation. Rather than merely listing developments, this study analyzes how architectural enhancements, spatial reorganizations, and management reforms collectively foster a conducive environment for da’wah by embodying Islamic values of hospitality, cleanliness, and communal care. The findings contribute to the broader discourse on religious tourism and Islamic communication by demonstrating that service-oriented innovations, when guided by spiritual intent, can reinforce religious identity and deepen pilgrims’ spiritual experiences. This research advances the understanding of da’wah bil hal as a contextual, experience-based form of Islamic outreach embedded in contemporary pilgrimage practices.

Abstract

This study investigates the post-Hajj da'wah initiatives of the Indonesian Hajj Brotherhood Association (IPHI), with a focus on its role in fostering social cohesion and community empowerment among Hajj alumni in a pluralistic society. While existing research on Hajj pilgrimage has primarily centered on ritual dimensions or state regulation, little attention has been given to the post-pilgrimage civic and da'wah activities facilitated by community-based organizations such as IPHI. Addressing this gap, the study explores how IPHI Kapanewon Tempel functions as a local model of religious engagement and social mobilization after Hajj. Employing a qualitative case study approach, this research highlights the selection of IPHI Tempel due to its active engagement in grassroots da'wah and intergroup dialogue. The findings reveal that IPHI not only reinforces Islamic values among returning pilgrims but also contributes to broader social harmony through inclusive educational and social programs. This study offers a novel perspective by framing post-Hajj religious activism as a form of localized civic da'wah, thus expanding the discourse on pilgrimage beyond its ritual boundaries. The research contributes to understanding how religious organizations transform spiritual experiences into sustained community action in multicultural contexts.

Abstract

This study analyzes the rhetorical strategies employed in digital da'wah through Habib Husein Ja'far's TikTok account, focusing on integrating Aristotle's rhetorical elements: Ēthos, Pathos, and Logos. Using a qualitative content analysis approach, the study examined ten selected TikTok videos uploaded between June and August 2024. The data were analyzed using a thematic coding framework that identified verbal, visual, and emotional cues corresponding to each rhetorical element. The findings reveal that Habib Husein Ja'far constructs ēthos through consistent use of culturally resonant fashion and informal yet authoritative speech. Pathos is activated through emotionally charged thumbnails, personal narratives, and audio-visual editing that appeals to viewers' feelings. Logos appears in simplified language, analogies, and occasional textual references to Islamic sources, enhancing message clarity and coherence. Notably, the most viral video, garnering over 10 million views, illustrates the effective convergence of these rhetorical elements in a short, relatable format. This study underscores the significance of rhetorical literacy in digital da'wah and demonstrates how TikTok can serve as a powerful platform for religious engagement. The results suggest that future da'wah practices can benefit from a balanced, theory-informed rhetorical approach that adapts to platform-specific audience dynamics while preserving the core values of Islamic communication.

Abstract

This article examines the practice of secret marriage in Pekoren Village, Rembang District,  Pasuruan Regency, East Java, with a focus on the central role of the kyai (Islamic cleric) in legitimizing the practice. Using a qualitative approach and ethnographic methods, this study explores how local religious authority constructs, negotiates, and sustains social legitimacy for marriages that are not legally recognized by the state. The study finds that the authority of the kyai is neither singular nor absolute, but shaped through complex social, symbolic, and economic relationships. Secret marriage occurs in various contexts, including late-life marriages, suspended marriages due to age restrictions, and polygamous marriages without official permission. The kyai serves as a mediator between religious norms and state legal pressures, offering religious legitimacy when the formal legal system is perceived as inadequate. This article shows that state law and local norms intersect through a space of compromise maintained by cultural-religious authority. Drawing on Khaled Abou El Fadl’s theory of authority and Max Weber’s theory of social action, the article underscores the importance of understanding legal pluralism and social authority in grassroots family law practices in Indonesia.

Abstract

The increasing transition of Islamic preaching (da’wah) to digital platforms has generated new requirements for digital literacy among community-level preachers (da’i). Although current research frequently emphasises content strategies and audience reactions, little attention has been directed towards the actual experiences of grassroots da’i in managing this shift. This study examines the development and use of digital literacy among virtual da’i in Ponorogo within their preaching practices. Employing a phenomenological methodology that included three participants, data were gathered via in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and document analysis, and thereafter analysed using the European Commission’s digital literacy competence framework. The findings indicate that da’i often exhibit basic to intermediate levels of digital literacy, characterised by constrained technical abilities, instinctive rather than methodical material selection, and a reluctance to participate in interactive online communication. This study adds to the body of knowledge by providing an experienced viewpoint on community-based digital da’wah. It offers practical guidance for developing participatory training models incorporating technical, ethical, and communication skills.

Abstract

This article addresses the research question: Does excluding spiritual foundations from political philosophy undermine justice and legitimacy in modern societies? The primary aim is to critically compare secular and Islamic humanism to clarify their ethical frameworks. As commonly practiced in Western political thought, secular humanism centers on human autonomy and procedural rationality while often marginalizing spiritual and metaphysical perspectives. This orientation, the article argues, leads to a crisis of meaning and normative fragmentation, reducing politics to a technocratic process devoid of ethical depth. In contrast, Islamic humanism—or al-Insāniyyah ar-Rūḥiyyah—roots human dignity in concepts such as divine trust (amānah), servanthood (ʿubūdiyyah), and justice (ʿadālah), integrating ethical responsibility and spiritual purpose into the heart of political life. Methodologically, the study employs a normative-philosophical analysis, drawing from the works of Taha Abdurrahman, Al-Fārābī, and Al-Māwardī, to construct a comparative framework. The findings demonstrate that incorporating spiritual anthropology is not simply a theological issue but an epistemic necessity for achieving meaningful justice. Ultimately, the article offers a conceptual model for reconstructing political ethics, bridging rational and spiritual dimensions to advance a more just and coherent political order.
