Two decades or more, in the global scheme, Islamic studies have been enforced to take broader paradigms from dogmatic-theology to popular-religious. Islamic studies is not merely discussing on sacred corpus only, but everyday life of Islam also. In academic space, this field has increasingly been an intersection -if not a contestation- across disciplines, such as political science, anthropology, sociology, history, economics, media, and cultural studies.

Abstract

This research examines the normative and ethical implications of the West Java Governor’s statement proposing vasectomy as a prerequisite for prioritizing social assistance, by addressing the central question of whether such policy discourse constitutes a violation of maqāṣid al-syarīʿah and generates legal–ethical conflicts within Islamic and national legal frameworks. Employing a qualitative approach with library-based research methodology, this study analyzes secondary data through descriptive and content analysis. The analytical framework is grounded in maqāṣid al-syarīʿah theory, while conclusions are drawn using a deductive reasoning approach. The findings demonstrate that conditioning social assistance on vasectomy represents a normative inconsistency that contradicts the principle of preserving progeny (ḥifẓ al-nasl), as articulated in Ibn al-ʿUthaymīn’s fatwas, which prohibit permanent sterilization except in cases of medical necessity. Furthermore, the study identifies significant legal and ethical tensions, including the erosion of religious commitment, distortion of the concept of tawakkul, and violations of bodily autonomy and reproductive rights as protected under national law and human rights norms. The research concludes that such policy discourse risks producing structural injustice against economically marginalized groups. As an alternative, this study proposes rights-based and maqāṣid-oriented solutions, including sustainable economic empowerment programs, comprehensive reproductive health education, voluntary use of non-permanent contraception, and the reinforcement of a fair, non-discriminatory social security system to achieve public welfare without compromising fundamental religious values and human rights.

Abstract

This study addresses a significant lacuna in Nusantara Islamic manuscript scholarship, which has predominantly emphasized cataloguing, textual transmission, and codicological description, while leaving the functional, symbolic, and theological dimensions of wafaq practices underexamined. Focusing on a circular wafaq (wafaq dā’irah) manuscript from Lampung containing Q. 48:29 and Q. 2:246, this research investigates how Qur’anic text, geometric symbolism, and local religiosity intersect within the tradition of ʿIlm al-Hikmah. Employing a qualitative-descriptive design that integrates philological, codicological, and hermeneutical approaches, the study analyzes the manuscript’s textual integrity, visual structure, and socio-historical context in the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. The findings demonstrate that the Qur’anic verses were transmitted faithfully according to the ʿUthmānic rasm, yet functionally transformed through circular geometric inscription, shifting from recitative devotion (tilāwah) to visual-symbolic mediation (hirz/azīmah). Genealogically, the manuscript reflects adaptation of classical Middle Eastern esoteric works—particularly Shams al-Maʿārif al-Kubrā and Khazīnat al-Asrār—into a localized Lampung context, evidenced by Pegon annotations and pragmatic spiritual aims such as protection and authority. Beyond documenting syncretization, this study argues that wafaq manuscripts constitute a contested epistemological arena in which orthodoxy, esotericism, and local authority are negotiated. Consequently, Islamization in Lampung is better understood not as linear doctrinal purification but as a process of symbolic internalization and material articulation of sacred text. By foregrounding the theological contestation and socio-symbolic function of wafaq, this research reframes Indonesian Islamic esotericism as an integral, though debated, component of Islamic intellectual history rather than a peripheral magical residue.

Abstract

Discipline is a fundamental component of character formation in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). However, disciplinary violations among santri persist despite the presence of kyai leadership, the implementation of ta’zir (Islamic disciplinary sanctions), and institutional supervision, indicating that external control mechanisms alone may be insufficient to foster sustainable discipline. This study examines the relationships among Kyai Leadership, Educational Management Performance, Ta’zir, Self-Awareness, and Student Discipline using a quantitative design. Self-Awareness is conceptualized as a psychological internalization mechanism grounded in character education and self-regulation theory. Data were collected from 113 santri through purposive sampling and analyzed using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The measurement model met established reliability and validity thresholds. The structural model explains 58.40% of the variance in Student Discipline (R² = 0.584), indicating substantial explanatory power. The results show that Kyai Leadership does not have a significant direct effect on Student Discipline (β = 0.023; T = 0.217; p = 0.828), suggesting that charismatic authority alone may no longer serve as a primary predictor of disciplined behavior. In contrast, Educational Management Performance significantly influences Self-Awareness (β = 0.604; T = 4.057; p < 0.001) and Student Discipline (β = 0.318; T = 2.689; p = 0.007). Self-Awareness also significantly affects Student Discipline (β = 0.489; T = 4.429; p < 0.001) and partially mediates the relationship between management performance and discipline (β = 0.296; T = 2.836; p = 0.005). These findings indicate a shift from authority-based discipline toward system-based governance supported by psychological internalization processes and suggest strengthening institutional management alongside students’ self-regulatory development.
