Abstract

This study analyzes the symbolic meaning of Loga statues in the Bada Valley through the interpretive, symbolic anthropology approach of Clifford Geertz and the symbolic interpretation of Victor Turner. Using Geertz's theory, the perspective views Loga statues as cultural "texts" that reflect the worldview, values, and local identity of the Bada community. Turner's perspective views Loga statues with an emphasis on the role of statues in the context of rituals as symbols of social structure and community solidarity. The research method uses qualitative descriptive methods with an ethnographic basis; the research location is in Pada village, Bada Valley, Lore Lindu National Park, Central Sulawesi, and data collection methods are obtained through observation and in-depth interviews. The results of the study show that Loga statues function as symbols that connect people with their ancestors, maintain and strengthen social ties, and reproduce cultural values through rituals. The combination of these two theories provides a comprehensive insight into how the symbols in Loga statues play a role in maintaining cultural sustainability and strengthening the identity of the Bada community. Loga statues are not only artifacts but also active agents in the social and spiritual life of the people in the Bada Valley.

Abstract

One of the main challenges in understanding contemporary paintings is their high degree of abstraction. Each painting simplifies and alters its subject's form, with varying degrees of similarity to objects from nature. This study aims to examine how the degree of abstraction in contemporary painting subjects affects visitors' appreciative responses using an aesthetic psychology approach. The study employs a mixed-methods approach with a multiple-case study design. Semarang Gallery and Sangkring Art Space, both reputable galleries known for their artistic collections and high visitor numbers, were selected for this study. An evaluative survey was conducted with visitors at each gallery using a standardized set of operational questions. Descriptive statistical analysis was applied to calculate the average appreciation scores for each structure within the aesthetic psychology framework. Qualitative data from interviews and observations were employed to explain and enrich the survey findings. A cross-case analysis was carried out to identify the similarities and differences in the tendencies of aesthetic psychological structures across the two galleries. The findings indicate that three types of contemporary paintings, each with a varying degree of subject abstraction, were appreciated by visitors at both Semarang Gallery and Sangkring Art Space across the affective, perceptual, and cognitive dimensions. Affective responses emerged as the most dominant, followed by perceptual and cognitive responses, with an insignificant difference level (p < 0.05). The finding suggests that the degree of abstraction in contemporary paintings does not significantly affect the public's ability to appreciate them, particularly in affective, perceptual, and interpretative responses.

Abstract

Deaf individuals primarily rely on visual modes of communication such as sign language, which also function as powerful expressions of cultural identity. Despite this, their representation within the arts remains limited, particularly in Indonesia, where access and inclusion are still developing. This study explores how visual art, specifically zine-making, can serve as an inclusive and culturally grounded creative space for the Deaf community, emphasizing the interaction between Deaf identity, sign language, and visual expression. Rooted in a constructivist epistemology, this research is grounded in the belief that knowledge is actively constructed through interaction, experience, and meaning-making. To support this philosophical stance, the study employs three interrelated methodologies: Practice-Led Research to guide the artistic process and creative exploration; Aesthetic Phenomenology to examine the lived and embodied experiences of visual creation and reception; and Actor-Network Theory (ANT) to analyze the relational dynamics among human and non-human actors involved in the zine-making process. Through collaborative artistic engagement with Deaf individuals and reflective documentation of their interactions, the study reveals that zines function not only as artistic outcomes but also as inclusive communication tools that bridge the Deaf and hearing worlds. Visual elements inspired by BISINDO (Indonesian Sign Language) operate as symbolic markers of Deaf identity, while the integration of grapyak, a Javanese cultural value emphasizing hospitality, supports the formation of inclusive aesthetics rooted in local traditions. This research contributes to the field of disability arts by demonstrating how zine-making can serve as a site of cultural dialogue, visual empowerment, and artistic inclusion. It also provides a model for integrating local cultural values into inclusive visual practices.

Abstract

The increasing competition in eco-friendly product marketing has driven the need for innovative digital promotion strategies, particularly on social media platforms. Lerak, a traditional natural detergent, requires an effective communication approach to enhance public awareness and market reach. This study aims to optimize social media marketing content for Demibumi’s lerak products by focusing on feed and motion graphics design strategies across Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. Employing a qualitative method with a design thinking approach, the research followed five key stages: problem identification, audience analysis, idea generation, prototyping, and evaluation. Data were gathered through observation, content analysis, and feedback from target audiences. The results indicate that combining educational visual elements with storytelling in both static feed designs and short-form video content (reels) significantly improves visual appeal, audience engagement, and promotional efficiency. Educational infographics increased user retention, while narrative-driven videos fostered emotional connection and brand trust. The study concludes that a well-structured design strategy integrating informative content and compelling narratives can enhance the effectiveness of social media campaigns for eco-friendly products. The strategic contribution of this research lies in offering a replicable creative content model that integrates design aesthetics, brand storytelling, and audience relevance, serving as a reference for sustainable product marketing in digital environments.

Abstract

Lasem, a coastal town in Central Java, Indonesia, is well known for its unique batik that blends cultural influences from both Chinese and Javanese. The study explores how traditional hand-drawn batik Lasem functions as a visual narrative representing Chinese ethnic identity and helps preserve culture in Indonesia’s diverse society. Through qualitative research, data were collected through purposive sampling of key informants, namely artisans and batik entrepreneurs at the ‘Kidang Mas’ batik center in Lasem. Data collection techniques include in-depth observation, semi-structured interviews, and visual documentation of the batik-making process. The researchers used thematic analysis to examine repeated patterns, cultural symbols, and meaning in the batik-making process. The findings exhibit cultural preservation in practices such as using canting tools, applying nature-based designs, and incorporating symbols from Chinese mythology. These motifs are decorative and tell stories regarding belief, values, and cultural identity. This study adds to discussions on intangible cultural heritage by showing that traditional batik is more than simply ‘an art’ but a living expression of Chinese-Indonesian identity. The combination of symbolic and local elements reflects cultural strength and adaptation, highlighting hand-drawn batik Lasem in keeping minority identities in Indonesia visible in Indonesia’s multicultural society.

Abstract

The rise of digital platforms has profoundly transformed film production and consumption, shifting cinema to internet-based media like YouTube. This development necessitates an understanding of how film aesthetics, viewing practices, and industrial structures evolve in the digital age. While prior scholarship mainly examined industrial transitions and social media’s influence, there’s a critical gap in how digital platforms, specifically YouTube, reconfigure cinematic aesthetics and ontology. This study employs a qualitative integrative literature review to examine how YouTube, as a platform, rearticulates cinema’s aesthetic dimensions and ontology. Key findings reveal three core themes: YouTube reimagines early cinematic aesthetics (e.g., short duration, spectacle) as “digital attraction” through algorithmic optimization; it operates as a modern exhibition machine, commodifying content via its interface and algorithms; and these platform-driven dynamics generate significant socio-economic implications, compelling cinematic labor into a “prosumer” model and transforming traditional film consumption into a “hyper-social non-place”. Ultimately, YouTube embodies a paradoxical hybrid cinematic environment, challenging filmmakers or content creators to balance artistic integrity with commercial demands. This study highlights the need to critically re-evaluate cinema’s evolving form and function.

Abstract

This study explores the process of creating a musical composition titled "Salen-Log Counterpoint" as an effort to adapt the aesthetics of Sundanese karawitan music within the format of a Western orchestral ensemble. The work was developed as part of an intercultural approach within the field of contemporary music composition. The aim of this study is to reveal the artistic process and technical strategies involved in transforming karawitan musical idioms into the systems and organology of the orchestra. This research employs a practice-based method, involving Wallas’ four-stage model of the creative process: preparation, incubation, illumination, and verification. The findings indicate that a contrapuntal approach combining pelog, salendro, and Western tonal systems can produce a distinct new sound texture, despite presenting technical and interpretative challenges. Adjustments in notation and playing techniques are key to maintaining a balance between aesthetic concepts and musical feasibility. This study contributes to the discourse on intercultural composition and the creative practice of integrating traditional aesthetics into contemporary musical works.

Abstract

Regional songs serve as repositories of cultural values and identity markers, yet limited scholarly attention has examined their role in transmitting religious and social values within specific ethnic communities. This study applies Paul Ricoeur's three-stage hermeneutic framework—explanation, understanding, and appropriation—to analyze four purposively selected songs by Anang Ardiansyah: Batasmiyah, Bismillah Kata Bamula, Puhun Rambai, and Paris Barantai. Selection criteria included: (1) representation of different thematic elements (religious practice, cultural identity, social solidarity, environmental connection), (2) widespread recognition within Banjar communities, and (3) availability of complete lyrical texts. The explanation stage involved literal textual analysis, understanding examined cultural-contextual meanings within Banjar Islamic traditions, and appropriation explored contemporary relevance for cultural preservation. Analysis reveals three primary symbolic domains: (1) religious integration through ritual terminology ("Bismillah kata bamula", "batapung tawar") demonstrating Islamic-Banjar cultural synthesis, (2) social solidarity mechanisms embedded in zakat and gotong royong references that prescribe communal responsibility, and (3) place-based identity construction through geographical markers ("Kotabaru gunungnya bamega") and natural symbols (rambai tree) that anchor cultural belonging. The study's theoretical contribution lies in demonstrating how Ricoeur's hermeneutic appropriation stage can illuminate the contemporary transmission of traditional values through musical narratives. These findings provide empirical evidence for integrating Anang Ardiansyah's compositions into formal Islamic education curricula as supplementary materials for akhlaq (character) instruction, and suggest developing community-based cultural workshops using these songs as discussion frameworks for intergenerational value transmission among Banjar diaspora communities.
