Abstract

The Asmat tribe has experienced significant cultural and civilizational changes in two phases, namely the arrival of missionaries in 1953 and post-independence of Indonesia in 1963. The abolition of the head-hunting tradition carried out in the mission to "humanize" the Asmat people became a cultural "defect" that stimulated the cultural evolution. The identity of the Asmat Tribe as a "wood people" create a new identity and contemporary culture oriented towards social progress based on the concept of divinity. This research is presented descriptively using qualitative research paradigm with an ecotheological approach to explaining changes of the traditional beliefs of the Asmat Tribe to the modern religious teachings.

Abstract

The New Order was a gripping order for the ethnic Chinese community, how could they not get different treatment at that time when massive discrimination by the Indonesian government had a major impact in all corners of Indonesia. This discriminatory behavior was caused by several factors, including the occurrence of the "coup" in 1965, because it was suspected that China participated in the Indonesian Communist Party in the "coup" of 1965. After the "coup" in 1965, the situation in the People's Republic of China and Indonesia worsened, which influenced the New Order government's policy towards ethnic Chinese and led to discriminatory behavior. This discrimination occurred in Gorontalo, so that places of worship and schools for Chinese were closed and they were not allowed to perform their traditional ceremonies.

Abstract

Latea Cave I and II cultural heritage sites are burial sites using wooden coffins in Tentena, Poso, and Central Sulawesi. The cave is a tourist destination for foreign and local tourists. Latea Caves I and II have more skull and yumu finds than any other site around Tentena. Thus, this research was carried out by observing tourist behaviour and the conditions of the surrounding environment. The results of the observations showed that factors that could damage the behaviour of tourists were rodents, such as rats, as well as humid environmental conditions. So the solution that can be given is to improve the performance of custodians as well as tour guides by adding facilities such as rubbish bins and monitoring the conservation that has been carried out. Abstract

The EDSA Revolution, or People Power Revolution, that took place in the Philippines in 1986 is one of the most important examples of a people’s movement that successfully overthrew an authoritarian regime without violence. The movement emerged in response to the two-decade-long dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos. Driven by electoral fraud, socio-economic discontent, and political repression, millions of Filipinos joined the peaceful protests that ultimately ended Marcos’ rule. This paper will discuss the political, economic, and social background that sparked the revolution, the chronology of events, the role of civil society and the Catholic Church, and the long-term impact of the EDSA Revolution on the Philippines and similar movements around the world.

Abstract

Gorontalo is the 32nd province located in the northern part of the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Gorontalo is known for its rich culture and deep traditions. One of the most famous cultural heritages of Gorontalo is Karawo embroidery fabrics. Karawo is a cloth decorated with intricate hand embroidery, usually used in traditional events or as a symbol of social status. The motifs on Karawo fabric are inspired by nature and the social life of the people of Gorontalo, have high symbolic value and become a distinctive cultural identity. However, along with the times, the motifs on Karawo fabric began to shift. This study aims to analyze the shift in motives, using a qualitative approach strengthened by the theory of the totality principle and the time principle. The principle of totality helps to analyze aspects of function, meaning, and symbolism in Karawo's design, while the principle of time examines the changes that occur in Karawo fabrics based on four indicators: what is fixed, what is lost, what is new, and what is changing. Despite the shift of Karawo motifs towards more modern designs, some Karawo fabrics still retain strong traditional cultural elements. In this study, it was concluded that even though there were changes in the design of the motifs, Karawo fabric still reflected Gorontalo's dynamic cultural identity and was able to adapt to the demands of the times.
