Abstract

Currently, the level of knowledge among cattle farmers in raising cattle is still low, as evidenced by the conventional nature of the farming system, resulting in low productivity. The optimal utilization of appropriate technology to improve the productivity of cattle has not been achieved. The community service activities conducted involve technology transfer to enhance innovation and creativity among farmers through the application of herbal medicine and probiotics in the provided feed. The technology is implemented using the "Learning By Doing" method to ensure that innovation can be directly conveyed and easily understood by the farmers. The application of herbal medicine and probiotics in cattle feed is carried out directly for approximately 1.5 months, with cattle being weighed every 15 days. The results of this activity indicate that the implementation of appropriate technology through the use of herbal medicine and probiotics in cattle feed among a group of cattle farmers in DLT-UNJA, Pudak Village, Kumpeh Ulu District, Muaro Jambi Regency, has increased the productivity of Bali cattle with a body weight gain of 0.59 kg/head/day.

Abstract

The target of rural development is village independence and prosperity, that can be achieved by managing village economic institutions, BUMDes (village-owned enterprises). BUMDes is a business entity where the village directly or mostly owns its capital through direct participation, derived from the village’s separated assets, to manage assets, provide services, and engage in other businesses for the welfare of the village community. When BUMDes is able to operate well, generate profits that contribute more to the village's income (PADes) and reduce its unemployment, then the village will be more independent and prosperous. North Sumatra Province has 5,417 village areas but based on the Developing Village Index (IDM), there are only 16 villages with independent status. This indicates that the rural development in North Sumatra still needs to be carried out continuously. In Karo Regency, there is an independent succeed village because it is able to utilize the potential of existing natural resources, namely Raya Village, Berastagi District. This village owns a BUMDes called Arih Ersada that manages the Taman Seribu Bunga Agrotourism business unit, which always needs to be maintained and improved, so that it continuously contributes optimally to the development and empowerment of the community in Raya Village. This service activity is trying to do something that will improve the quality and functionality of Taman Seribu Bunga Agrotourism through landscape management in order to increase visitors as an effort to increase BUMDES income and empower the Raya village community.

Abstract

The catch of rebon shrimp which are abundant in season in the coastal of Pangkalan Susu subdistrict, is utilized by the community of Pulau Kampai village to be processed into shrimp paste which has been passed down for generations and has become a legendary product of this village. One community group that produces shrimp paste is the Atha Baroe home industry. Production yields, which are still on average 50 kg per month, are still very small because this business is still carried out in the traditional way and still requires a touch of technology to improve quality and selling power so that it can compete in the local market. To overcome these problems, the Community Service Team at the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara offers the application of technology in the form of drying machines and vacuum packaging machines. The approach method used in the application of technological innovation is through a participatory, conceptual, theoretical, and practical approach as well as a reflective approach. The application of a drying machine can replace an open drying process that relies on sunlight, to improve the quality and hygiene of the final product through sensory tests which previously obtained e value of 6.550 ≤µ≤ 7.716 to 7.526 ≤µ≤ 8.803, besides that the operating capital of the machine is still affordable. Meanwhile, vacuum packaging machines are not only able to improve quality and maintain product durability but also increase product selling power.
