Abstract

This study aims to elucidate the political conduct of Sultan Hasanuddin and Sultan Nuku. Sultan Hasanuddin was a legitimate political leader who fought with Dutch forces during the mid-17th century. Sultan Nuku, an opposition leader, lacked significant legitimacy and subsequently engaged in conflict with Dutch forces during the late 18th century. The study employs a critical historical method that utilizes an Islamic political concept approach. This method aims to generate a critical historical explanation that promotes a shift from problematic political conduct that conflicts with human values to developmental political conduct based on human values. This study utilizes the Islamic political concept to conclude that Sultan Hasanuddin's political behaviour is noncompliant with the desired Islamic political behaviour, thus, problematic. Islam instructs political leaders to cultivate constructive political conduct when establishing domestic authority. To secure robust support and loyalty for political decisions, an Islamic leader must cultivate three key political behaviours: safeguarding, guiding, and motivating the populace. Sultan Hasanuddin was not responsible. Sultan Hasanuddin's internal political oppression was a vulnerability during the mid-17th century war against the Dutch in South Sulawesi. The study concludes that Sultan Nuku's political conduct aligns with Islamic political norms and is deemed favourable. Sultan Nuku effectively employed political strategies to govern and inspire his subjects. Historical evidence suggests that Islamic political behaviour aided Sultan Nuku in establishing a strong internal force to resist the Dutch. Sultan Nuku's effective political conduct was instrumental in his triumph over the Dutch in the late 18th century in North Maluku.

Abstract

The mosque is a religious institution with two functions: a place of worship and the formation of religious awareness (education). The role is also found in the Jendral Sudirman Mosque (MJS), which functions as a place of worship and for forming religious awareness. The construction of religious understanding at MJS is dynamic. In the 1980s, MJS was known as a place of indoctrination for Salafi-jihadi views, while in the 2010s, it was known as a cultural mosque. The change from an Islamic mosque to a cultural mosque underwent a long process. This study aims to analyze the role of agents in providing change while also forming an awareness of local culture-based religious moderation in the millennial generation. This study uses observation and interviews to find data. This study uses Pierre Bourdieu's theory of cultural reproduction to analyze an agent's role in shaping a mosque's identity. This research found three things: First, the transformation of the MJS from an Islamic mosque to a culture-moderate mosque occurred because of the accumulation of agent capital at stake in the mosque arena and formed a new habitual space. Second, MJS is a discursive space that leads to the dissemination of local culture-based religious moderation with contextualization patterns between Islam, culture, and modernity. Third, mosque-based moderation is disseminated using popular language styles and humour to make it easier for congregations to understand the material. This study concludes that the agent has an essential role in determining the identity of the mosque.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze and to describe values in Mapalus culture and its relation with religious moderation as a contribution for strengthening religious moderation based on local wisdom. A descriptive qualitative method was used in this study. It was found that: Firstly, Mapalus was a culture of Minahasan tribe consisting of the values of solidarity, cooperation, honesty, equality, and mutual respect which were useful in the life of the plural society. These values were relevant with the four indicators of religious moderation reinforcement, especially in tolerance, in being accommodative toward local culture and anti-harmful. Secondly, North Minahasa had a harmonious interreligious social relation according to the government, cultural practitioners, religionists, and the local communities. Thirdly, the efforts made by the community in order to implement Mapalus culture in North Minahasa corresponded to religious moderation, namely, solidarity in joy and sorrow, church constructions, and security on religious holidays. To maintain the harmonious interreligious relations in North Minahasa, it was very significant to make the values contained in Mapalus culture as the basis for strengthening religious moderation.

Abstract

Indonesia is a unitary state that adheres to a democratic system even though most of its population is Muslim. Radical Islamic circles use this reality to shake the sovereignty of elected leaders. As a result, the concept of religion and state ideology often clash through the rise of hoaxes and hate speech. In response, religious moderation is the Ministry of Religion's mainstay program to educate the public so that they are not easily exposed to radical views. The program's seriousness is embedded in various policy rhythms regarding outreach, education, ASN selection, seminars, and research grants at Perguruan Tinggi Keagamaan Islam Negeri (PTKIN). Under the Ministry of Religion, PTKIN Aceh should follow up on the religious moderation program the Government echoes. In fact, not all Aceh PTKIN academics accept religious moderation in totality, program deviations often occur, where PTKIN claims to be moderate before the Ministry of Religion but is anti-moderation when involved in society. This article belongs to field research with a qualitative approach. The methodology used is a descriptive analysis study with a comparative format for various PTKINs in Aceh. The research locations were IAIN Langsa, IAIN Lhokseumawe, UIN-Ar-Raniry, STAIN Dirundeng Meulaboh, and IAIN Takengon. The research findings conclude that the different forms of implementation of religious moderation between the Government and PTKIN Aceh are due to adaptation and dispersion (deviations). The dispersion of religious moderation in PTKIN in Aceh is influenced by scientific adaptation, leadership authority adaptation, local wisdom adaptation, and political adaptation.

Abstract

This article examined the connection between primordial and advance features in the formation of Javanese Reformed Christians settlement in urban Yogyakarta. It focused on the causal factors behind the spatial grouping. Most of the Javanese Reformed Christians experienced social mobility which enabled them to have better professions. This research used historical methods by using church archives and various secondary sources. In a way, religion became the ultimate foundation of the formation of spatial grouping for JRC residence in urban Yogyakarta. In another way, the zending fields in urban Yogyakarta did not only facilitate means of social ladder, but also equipped them with careers. This article also found that the formation of urban Protestant settlement in urban Yogyakarta took the same pattern from that of rural areas of Java. Both settlements required relatively distinct territorial unit enclosed as if within foreign territory, so that the residents would easily be focused on Protestant teachings. However, the urban settlement of this Protestant denomination differed in terms of access to modern facilities, such as education, hospital, transportation which proves that the facilities were originally intended for Europeans who mostly were Christians. The Reformed Christian  Javanese benefitted to this facilities because they embraced the same religion as that of the Europeans.

Abstract

Moral in the education sector is concerning, and some experts seek a solution to these problems. Understanding morals is essential because the accumulation of understanding of morals has an impact on the formation of attitudes and behaviour. As agents of change, college students are objects of moral education who become figures that will fulfil various sectors in social life: government, education, religion, industry, business, and others. This study focuses on how students' attitudes and behaviour view values and moral problems that occur among students. This analysis aims to know students' understanding of morals and their influence on student behavior attitudes in four universities in the city of Bandung: Nurtanio University, UIN Sunan Gunung Djati, Muhammadiyyah University Bandung, and STAI Persis Bandung. Another purpose is to know the types of moral education that influence students' thinking about morality and moral behavior in college. The method used in this study is statistical analysis. The data interpretation is through a questionnaire. The results will be analyzed using a phenomenological approach, where a researcher understands social actions and describes them by explaining the causes of these actions. Based on the results of the data and analysis regarding research, right action is manifested by one's personality and morals. The personality and morals are always consistent. The results of research show that students at tertiary institutions in Bandung demonstrate moral norms.

Abstract

Developing a humanistically egalitarian variety of perspectives on the relationship between men and women based on the educational system is necessary. Consequently, educational institutions can create an education system with human values. This study focuses on the efforts of Muhammadiyah educational institutions (SMA Muhammadiyah Boarding School Cilongok Banyumas, Madrasah Mualimin Mualimat Muhammadiyah Purwokerto, SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Malang, and MA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang) to establish an egalitarian educational pattern. The Muhammadiyah education system is interpreted using a qualitative phenomenological approach with a gender perspective to promote humanist, moderate, and egalitarian diversity. This study discovered that efforts to comprehend the Koran and al-Hadith regarding egalitarian relationships between men and women could not be separated from the orientation of Muhammadiyah's educational institution as a religious renewal movement. This effort produces a humanist- egalitarian education based on integrative values between the empirical dimension (verse kauniyyah) and the revelations of the Qur'an and al-Hadith (verse qauliyyah), which are dialogued to foster human religious potential that is non-discriminatory. Based on theological values, the axiological dimension of education creates a proportional attitude in the relationship between men and women. This is referred to as gender-religious equality.

Abstract

In the Malay world, mosque-based economic empowerment has grown in popularity, with Indonesia and Malaysia dominating the presentation of documents on the mosque economy. The purpose of this study was to conduct a literature review on the economic empowerment of mosques in the Malay world and its relationship to civilization. On the basis of keywords pertinent to the economic empowerment of mosques in the Malay world, scholarly articles indexed by Scopus and Google Scholar were reviewed. Using techniques of content analysis, 44 relevant articles were gathered and analyzed. The results indicated that mosque-based economic empowerment programs have increased in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, but not in Southern Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, or the Philippines, where mosques continue to be centers of religious activity. Mosque-based economic empowerment is consistent with Ibn Khaldun's Asabiyah concept, in which the mosque serves as a social organization for Muslims in Malay countries. In some countries, mosque-based economic empowerment has reached a spiritual and rational stage, according to Malik Bennabi. This study can be used as a resource by administrators of mosques and Islamic organizations in the Malay world region to promote economic empowerment to strengthen social cohesion and the Asabiyah of the Malay Muslim community.

Abstract

Despite extensive research on religious tolerance, there is little empirical research on the sensitive issue of sacred sound, particularly in minority Muslim areas. This issue emerged in Indonesia following the Minister of Religious Affairs' policy to regulate loudspeakers from mosques, which were seen as potentially causing intolerance. Religious tolerance remains well established in Muslim-minority areas such as Tana Toraja, even though mosques are allowed to sound freely. The present research explores the traces of Christian tolerance to the sound of mosques heard by minority Muslims. This qualitative study applied an interpretive phenomenological research design with religious leaders, academics, students, and Christian community members as data sources. Garret Keizer's noise theory and Robert Hayden's concept of tolerance categorisation were used to analyse the data. The research results indicated tolerance between religious communities as the mosque sound was accepted as a natural-cultural sound rather than a theological sound. Therefore, intolerance potential arises from the sociological rather than theological dimension. This study suggests that religious tolerance should be shaped by a professional understanding of one's faith and an appropriate response to the religious practices of others.  External factors such  as social, economic, and political issues, often framed as religious issues, are at the root of religious intolerance. In order to counter the risk of intolerance, a systematic and continuous socialisation of a moderate understanding of all elements of the religious communities is required.

Abstract

The index of tolerance for harmony among religious communities in Indonesia is fluctuates, tends to strengthen but is still affected by intolerance cases which should not have happened at the first place. This study aims to identify the local wisdom value in maintaining diversity, and the role of socio-religious institutions to strengthen diversity. Qualitative research methods involve 30 informants selected by using purposive sampling and data collected within-depth interviews, in January-February 2023. data were analyzed thematically and carried out through three stages; data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions and verification. The results of the research show that there is an implementation of the contact theory by utilizing local wisdom in the ethnic groups that inhabit this research locus are Sipakatau, Sigunakannge, and Sipakalebbi, Teposliro, Meyama-Braya, Asah, Asih, Asuh, and Banjar traditions. The implementation of these values is strengthened by socio-religious institutions consisting of religious and traditional leaders, youth, educational institutions, politicians, the economy, which also strengthen community contact activities, which functionally play a role in accordance with their respective fields. The contribution of this research is practically to strengthen tolerance in a diverse society, which is often affected by intolerance cases. The  declaration of Kampung Pancasila at the research locus is a concrete manifestation of the will of the entire community to live together in a peaceful atmosphere.
