Abstract

This article aimed to determine segregation between Muslims and Christians in the Tolaki ethnic community, especially in the Wolasi and Lambuya Sub-districts, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. The two areas are important to review, considering that the two populations, consisting of Muslims and Christians, come from the same ethnic group but differ in their response to religious pluralism. The method used is descriptive qualitative, utilizing observation and in-depth interviews. Furthermore, the data were analyzed using ethnography and historical approaches. The results show that the Tolaki ethnic group (Muslim and Christian) in the Lambuya community more openly responds to religious pluralism than the Wolasi community. In terms of historical perspective, the Wolasi community experienced cultural trauma from the history of Christianization during the Dutch colonies. This is because there were significant differences in perspective between religious believers, even though they were still in one ethnic group and family. In contrast, the Lambuya community prioritizes the interests of brotherhood relations within the same ethnicity and family. But the people in both subdistricts take local customs and cultures into account when trying to solve religious and social problems. If they don’t get along because of their different religions, Kalosara can help them work things out. This research suggests that combining faith and local wisdom is an alternative way to deal with social diversity.

Abstract

Abstract

This research article focuses on analyzing the Arabic learning paradigm in strengthening the Qur'anic studies through Muhammad Arkoun's semiotist critical study. This research is a descriptive qualitative research using in-depth interviews, participatory observation, documentation, and reference tracing as the collection method. The collected data is then processed through 1) editing, 2), classifying, 3) analyzing, 4) and concluding. The results showed that Arabic learning paradigm in strengthening the Qur’anic studies at PTKIN in South Sulawesi showed that the Arabic learning has quite varied study dynamics so that it indicated that the study of Arabic was already running on the correct paradigm. In general, it can be said that there are two types of Arabic learning applied, which in this case is Arabic as MKDU,  General Basic Course, with an orientation on Ta'lim al-Lugah al-Arabiyah li al-Agradh al-Khassah and Arabic learning in various special programs like intensive Arabic learning, whether based on ma'had al-jamiah or not. In the process, the learning process cannot be separated from the Arabic learning, both of which are taught in an interdisciplinary study cycle. The construct of Arabic learning paradigm in strengthening the Qur'anic studies at PTKIN in South Sulawesi through Muhammad Arkoun's semiotist critical perspective refers to three levels of Qur’anic studies by making Arabic as one of the objects of study which in this case is the historical-anthropological level, linguistic-semiotic level, and theological-religious level. In the process, the Arabic learning is used as a forum to accommodate various practical-methodical frameworks of the interpretation of the Qur'an considering the position of Arabic in this context as the language of the Qur'an. A more contextual and historical understanding of the Qur'an can only be realized when the Arabic with its various historical dimensions as summarized in the various scientific frame that build it is also studied comprehensively and holistically.

Abstract

The development of extreme religious perspectives, attitudes of subjective truth claims that impose their religious interpretations are the main basis for the need for a moderate religious perspective. This article aims to analyse the situation of harmony, the experience of discrimination based on religion and to examine the religious moderation attitudes in the community. This research was conducted in a multicultural urban area in the Province of DI Yogyakarta, Baleharjo and Sinduadi Villages. This study found that respondents who experienced discrimination due to their religion were very low. However, 10.2% of respondents reported that there had been friction in their community. This study also found that level of people's attitudes regarding religious moderation measured by national commitment, tolerance, non-violence and accommodativeness to local culture can be categorized as high or good. However, there are several aspects of religious moderation that need to be strengthened such as attitudes about the importance of solving problems through legal approach if a person has problems with followers of other religions, acceptance of the establishment of houses of worship of other religions, leaders from other religions and the desire to conduct demonstrations and expel groups that are considered deviant. This study also found that the higher the education of the respondents, the higher the average score of religious moderation. Respondents who are active in religious organizations have also a higher attitude of religious moderation. Education, both through formal education and religious activities, can be an effective strategy to strengthen religious moderation attitudes in society.

Abstract

Religious intolerance is a significant problem in Indonesia. This concern arises along with offline learning activities. Students who were previously limited in their activities can now move freely on campus. The lack of insight into religious tolerance causes new individuals to become intolerant easily. The purpose of this article is to explain how to implement the values of religious tolerance through compulsory general Indonesian language courses. This research belongs to the descriptive qualitative type using a direct-action research approach. The stages of this research were carried out with the introduction of Indonesian language courses, the provision of semester learning plans, discussion of materials 1-13, and the implementation of religious moderation in short writing production material. The discovery learning model used is Jerome Bruner's theory. The media used as an analysis material is the Tanda Tanya film directed by Hanung Bramantyo. Respondents in this study were 105 people taken from various scientific backgrounds at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. Random sampling aims to get natural results without any assumption of data manipulation and selection of data sources. This research was conducted in two stages, including first data collection, evaluation, and second data collection. It was found that the students of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta were able to find moderation values in the Tanda Tanya film. A total of 78 students have been able to analyze the meaning of religious moderation. Then, 14 students understood the meaning of moderation contained in the film through the discovery learning model.

Abstract

This study aims to describe, explore and analyze the local wisdom of noken as a symbol of Papuan culture which has a strong religious-spiritual meaning for the lives of the Papuan people. This study was compiled using a qualitative research design by relying on primary data obtained through interviews and observations of the daily life of women who make noken and use noken in Papuan society. The informants involved were religious leaders, community leaders and noken women. The findings of the study are that noken is Papuan life, as a vessel and source of life that contains religious-spiritual values. Noken is interpreted as a representation of God's love for Papua which fosters faith and hopes in the Creator. In addition, noken is seen as a second 'womb'. Children born are put in a noken as a container for growth and development until they are crawling. Furthermore, a special noken was made for children with the aim of practicing honesty. If a child takes food from someone else's noken, it means stealing. Stealing means sin according to custom and religion. Noken is not just known but has existed and is known from time to time, passed down and taught how important it is to live in Papuan noken human life. Thus noken is a representation of God's inclusion and maintenance of Papuan life. The ancestors of the Papuan people were explorers living on the island of Papua using the strategy of the regional language of the tribes in the land of Papua to teach noken, namely Ugatame. This means that God is the Creator of the heavens and the earth and humans who are similar to Him. The aim is for the Papuan people to have more faith in God Allah.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the local wisdom values of the Buginese community regarding Sipakatau, Sipakainge, and Sipakalebbi, manifestations of local wisdom values, and their relevance to religious moderation in Indonesia. This research is classified as qualitative descriptive research with exploratory methods and anthropological approaches. This research was conducted in Mallari Village, Bone Regency, which still has a strong practice of local wisdom and historical values. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The collected data was analyzed, and then the qualitative data were coded for the credibility of the results using the Nvivo-12 software. The results of the study show that (1) the local wisdom values of the Buginese, Sipakatau, Sipakainge, and Sipakalebbi are understood as traditional teachings/noble values, life guidelines, identity and customs that are in line with the Shari'a. (2) The manifestation of Buginese local wisdom values is reflected in people's behaviour by humanizing each other, having good etiquette towards the government, and mutual respect. (3) The relevance of Buginese local values to religious moderation programs lies in the human values of humanizing one another (sipakatau),  respecting  each other (sipakalebbi),  and  reminding  each other (sipakainge’).  The principle of Buginese local wisdom values that as long as they are human beings, it is appropriate to humanize, respect, and remind each other regardless of ethnicity, religion, and race; this is in line with national commitment and tolerance in religious moderation in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study describes and evaluates how the Pesantren (the Islamic Boarding School) Salafiyah Syafi'iyah of Gorontalo has fostered a movement away from radicalism among its students. The state promotion and action of structural counter-radicalism have reached only a few urban Indonesians. The majority, however, live in rural areas. This research used observation, interviews, and records. The data was then subjected to descriptive and critical analysis. This study showed that Pesantren have a significant role in preventing radicalisation in their local communities. This campaign has been ongoing for some time and is still strong due to efforts to strengthen academic, religious, and social cultures. Thus, it is necessary to combine the counter-radicalisation efforts of the state, which have focused on structural measures, with the cultural approach exemplified by the Pesantren communities. Maintaining and promoting the integration of all children in the country is important, as terrorism and other forms of radical thought and movement harm religion and the nation.

Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this article is to examine the tradition of visiting Tuan Tosalama ri Bulo-bulo's grave and to learn more about the phenomenon of this practice. Observation and in-depth interviews were used in a descriptive qualitative methodology. Additionally, the data were examined using Max Scheler's value hierarchy methodology. The findings demonstrated that Tuan Tosalama ri Bulo-bulo, who lived in the 16th century, was thought to be the one who first spread Islam in the confederation area of Karua Tiparittiqna Uhai (eight drops of water from the mountain). The inhabitants of Bulo- bulo regularly visit the graves as pilgrims who have been purified. As a sign of appreciation and a salute to Tuan Tosalama ri Bulo-bulo, it has even become a yearly custom in the area following the rice harvest. Not only is visiting the tombs a ritual, but it also has philosophical benefits, including spiritual, psychological, and recreational ones. The abundance of cakes and food served in each house highlights the pleasure value of having fun. This pilgrimage tradition's main benefit is that it serves as a meeting place for migrants returning home and residents of Bulo-bulo. Following their visit to Tuan Tosalama ri Bulo-bulo's grave, pilgrims are said to experience inner peace, according to psychological values. While traveling, pilgrims develop spiritually and exhibit religious values.
