Abstract

Background: Learning environment in medical education is one of several aspect determine students’ academic success. The medical education itself has been the biggest source of depression or stress for students, beside personal, financial, or family problems. The purpose of this study is to assess the correlation between students’ perception on learning environment and stress levels.Methods: This study was a cross sectional study, conducted from December 2016 to April 2017, involving the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th year students of the Faculty of Medicine, Baiturrahmah University (FK UNBRAH), Padang, with a total of 595 students. Students’ perceptions on learning environment were assessed using the Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) questionnaire and the student stress level was assessed by the questionnaire of Depression Anxiety Stress Scale 42 (DASS 42). Both questionnaires have been validated and available in Bahasa.Results: Respondents involved in this study were 477 (80.1%).The median of the students’s perceptions on their learning environment was 132 (92-200), which means "more positive than negative". Students’ perceptions on learning environment between 1st year students with other academic years differed significantly. There was no significant difference between female and male students' perceptions on the learning environment. The median value of student stress level of FK UNBRAH was categorized as normal. There was no statistically significant difference in stress level based on academic level and gender. The correlation between students’ perception toward learning environment and academic level was found to be significant with very weak negative correlation (p<0,05)Conclusion: The better students’ perception on the learning environment, the lower the stress level.

Abstract

Background: The paradigm shift of learning method centered on the students has been applied to several universities, one of them by using Problem Based Learning (PBL) method. The importance of good time management will produce readiness to face the PBL process because in the PBL process using self directed learning where a student is required to be able to manage the time independently. The purpose of this study is to know the time management of nursing students by using Time Management Questionnaire (TMQ) in implementing Problem Based Learning (PBL) method in STIKes Dharma Husada Bandung.Method : The type of research is quantitative with the model of analytic design and cross sectional approach. The sample of research is student of class of 2014 and 2015 of Nursing Study Program of 169 students. The research instrument with Time Management Questionnare (TMQ) developed by Briton & Tesser (1991) has been tested its validity and reliability with Alpha Cronbach 0,800 by Allay & Kocak (2002). The questionnaire consists of short-term planning, attitude toward time and long-term planning.Result : Most respondents have good time management that is 53.3%. For short-term planning most have good time management of 58.6% with the highest mean of 4.25 on "Put the  priority first" points, the attitude towards time mostly has good time management of 61.5% with the highest mean of 4.10 at the point of "responsible for time for yourself", and long-term planning mostly has a good time management of 50.9% with the highest mean of 3.64 on points "if having a job, preferring installments in the task".Conclusion: There needs to be a re-review of the implementation of PBL method, especially on the weighting of self or group tasks so that students can make long-term planning that can review the learning process.

Abstract

Background: Needs of health workers, especially general practitioners, relatively high in Indonesia. Career choices among medical students are various, such as general practitioner, specialist, medical researcher, etc. Many factors affect medical students’ career choices, one of them is learning environments. This study aims to prove the correlation between clerkship students’ perceptions of clinical learning environments and their career choices.Methods: This research was an analytical observational research with cross sectional approach. The subjects were clerkship students who underwent clinical rotation. The samples were 178 clerkship students from all departments. They were chosen by probability proportional to size sampling. Every respondent was given career choices questionnaire and PHEEM questionnaire which has analyzed for its validity and reliability with α≥0,6 (α=0,826) and r≥0,30 (r=0,442). The result of this study was analyzed by Chi-square test and followed by Contingency Coefficient with 95% confidence level (α = 0,05). Result: The result showed that students’ perception of clinical learning environment “good but still need improvement” category was nearly the same as “plenty of problems” category. The result on the students’ career choices, most students choose clinical career. There was significant correlation between perception of clinical learning environment and career choices on clerkship students of medical faculty, Sebelas Maret University with p <0,05 (p= 0,018), x2 count (x2=5,625) > x2 table (x2=3,841) and also very weak correlation (C= 0,189).Conclusion: There was very weak correlation between perception of clinical learning environments and career choice on clerkship students.

Abstract

Background: Learning environment is one parameter to evaluate the quality of learning. The learning approach reflects how a student learns in various situations that affect learning. This study aims to know the relationship between the perceptions of the learning environment and the learning approaches in the clerkship students of Medical Faculty.Methods: This research used an analytical observational method with cross-sectional technique. The sample selection technique used cluster sampling. Respondents consisted of 178 students from all clinical rotations. Each respondent was given two questionnaires to assess perceptions of the learning environment and learning approaches. Data were analyzed using contingency coefficient test.Results: Student perceptions of the learning environment show similar results between the number of clinical rotations that have the category of 'good but need improvement' (9 clinical rotations) and the 'many problems' category (9 clinical rotations). Most of the students (84.27%) used the in-depth learning approach, the remaining 10.67% used the strategic approach, and 5.06% used the surface approach. There was relationship between learning environment perception and learning approach with contingency coefficient value C = 0.312, and value p = 0,001 (p <0.05).Conclusion: There is a weak relationship between perception of clinical learning environments and learning approach on clerkship students of the medical faculty, University Sebelas Maret..

Abstract

Background: Academic achievement is influenced by two factors, internal and external factor. Learning environment is one of the external factors that affect the academic achievement. A conducive learning environment can improve students learning motivation and affect academic achievement.The aim of this research is to find out the relation between student’s perception of learning environment and learning motivation of pre-clinical student in Medical Faculty of Lampung University.Methods: This research was using cross sectional approach. The sample of this research consisted 248 pre-clinical student in Medical Faculty of Lampung University which determined by proportional-random sampling. This research used two questionnaires: Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) and Motivated Strategies of Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ). Data were analysed using Spearman.Results: The result showed that most of pre-clinical student in Medical Faculty of Lampung University have perception about learning environment was decent (74,6%) and learning motivation was high (98,8%), there was significant relation between student’s perception of learning environment and learning motivation which determined by p value <0,05 and r 0,462.Conclusion: From this research can be concluded that the better student’s perceptions of learning environment, the higher learning motivation becomes.

Abstract

Background: In the teaching process at medical faculty, there are many measuring devices have been used to evaluate the clinical reasoning ability. Each measuring device has the advantage and disadvantage. MCQ and SCT are the clinical reasoning measuring device. In the previous study, both methods have been validated. SCT is a more recent method to measure clinical reasoning compared to MCQ. This study aims to evaluate the concurrent validity between MCQ and SCT.Method: Forty-three students who had already passed the Paediatric clinical rotation were asked to complete 100 items of MCQ. The next day, they did 100 items of SCT. The concurrent validity is measured using correlation analysis.Results: Concurrent validity between MCQ and SCT did not show strong correlation (coefficient of rank spearman correlation= 0.291 with the probability = 0.058).Conclusion: Concurrent validity between MCQ and SCT do not have strong correlation in evaluating the clinical reasoning. SCT is used as complement to evaluation of clinical reasoning in order to be more specific and close to real setting.

Abstract

Background: Recorded lecture is a type of learning media which the lecturers record their voices when lecturing. This type of media is popular in many universities outside Indonesia. Faculty of Medicine Universitas Airlangga is developing electronic learning using recorded lecture in 2016. This study aimed to learn the experience of college student about the usage of recorded lecture, the impact to their learning style, and their hopes about the implementation of recorded lecture in Faculty of Medicine Universitas Airlangga. Method: This qualitative study applied content analysis design. The variable used are age, gender, intelligence quotient, learning style, learning equipment, experience when using learning media, and busyness in student affairs. Results: Eleven subjects are interviewed. The results are variably different between the subject. There are seven themes arise from the analysis results, for instance: 1) classical class alone was not enough, need another alternative; 2) the recorded lecture was similar with the one in internet; 3) used recorded lecture just for a few times; 4) recorded lecture was very beneficial; 5) the recorded lecture was too long; 6) college students are very busy outside the class; 7) a wish for the improvement og the recorded lectures, both quality and quality. Conclusion: The experience felt by medical education students on the use of recordings still varies. In general, students feel helped by the recording of lectures, on the other hand there are students who are not satisfied with the quality and quantity of lecture recordings provided by the campus. Massive and comprehensive improvements are needed in all aspects of providing lecture records, both in terms of teachers and in terms of technology support Keywords: recorded lecture, content analysis, qualitative research, medical student, electronic learning.

Abstract

Background: According to 21st century priorities in the Global Strategy On Human Resources For Health: Workforce 2030, the abilities of medical practices must be appropiate with the demands of the society. To realize the abilities of medical practices which are apropriate with the demands of the society, are using learning methods that encourage a more active learning process, thereby encouraging the activation of long term memory through the introduction of realistic and contextual cases that can increase the cognitive retention of students. Problem based learning method (PBL) has several limitations. One of them is the high demand of educators in number. Asynchronous blended problem based learning method (ABLE-PBL) is an instructional innovation that may be used in midwifery school institutions that have limited number of educators but they want to optimize the learning process and produce quality graduates who are competent in accordance with the demands of the society. The aim of this study is to know the influence of ABLE-PBL and PBL method on cognitive retention and student learning motivation.Method: This study conducted using a quantitative approach with total sample 37 Universitas Padjadjaran Midwifery students who are fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria, from March to June 2018 by cross over method.Results: This study showed that there was no difference between retention score 1 and retention score 2 of intervention group (ABLE-PBL) and control group (PBL) by using mann-whitney test (p > 0,05), ABLE-PBL and PBL had no difference in affecting cognitive retention and motivation by using chi square test (p > 0.05).Conclusion: ABLE-PBL method and PBL method has no difference in affecting cognitive retention and student learning motivation.

Abstract

Background: Retention is a goal in the learning process. The objective of this study was to compare the memory retention rates of neonatal resuscitation skills between blended learning strategies and conventional ones and to analyze the correlation of students’ perception on the implementation of blended learning towards memory retention rates of neonatal resuscitation skills.Method: This was an analytical study using quasi-experimental design applying posttest-only non-equivalent group design. The subjects of this study were students of DIII Midwifery Program of Health Polytechnic Palembang. The research subjects were divided into two groups; 25 subjects in blended learning group and 25 subjects in conventional group. The hypotheses were tested using Kolmogorov-Smirnov, to analyze the differences of memory retention rates of resuscitation skills between the two groups of study, and Chi-square test, to see the correlation of students’ perception on the implementation of blended learning with memory retention rates of resuscitation skills.Result: The results of study showed that the memory retention rates of neonatal resuscitation skills between blended learning group and conventional group were not significantly different. In addition, there was no correlation of students’ perception on the implementation of blended learning toward the memory retention rates of resuscitation skill.Conclusion: From the findings of this study, it can be concluded that there was no difference in the memory retention rates of neonatal resuscitation skills between blended learning strategies and conventional ones and there was no effect of the students’ perception on the implementation of blended learning towards the memory retention rates of neonatal resuscitation skills.

Abstract

 Background: In the Competence Standards of Indonesian Doctor (SKDI) which will ratify, interprofessional communicationand collaboration are competencies that Indonesian doctors mustown. Therefore, the implementation of interprofessional education (IPE) is a must for medical education institutions. Medical Faculty of the Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta (FK UPNVJ) has not specifically built the IPE module but has introduced aspects for interprofessional collaboration in the curriculum. Evaluation of the perceptions and readiness of students about IPE learning in students of academic year 2, 3 and 4 using the Indonesian version of The Interdisciplinary Education Perception Scale (IEPS) and Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) showed that there were no differences in IEPS scores on student years 2nd and 3rd but decreased in 4th year students and the best RIPLS scores in the 3rd year and decreased in the 4th year. Against these results, intervention recommendations are needed to obtain results following the demands and expectations.Objectives: This study aims to obtain recommendations made based on disscussion and analysis of teaching staff of the FK UPNVJ about the results of evaluating perceptions and readiness of the FK UPNVJ at the academic stage.Methods: The research was a phenomenological qualitative research. Data collection through the opened-ended on Focus Group Discussion and in-depth interviews with teaching staff of the FK UPNVJ.Results: The teaching staff stated the importance of implementing interprofessional education by forming a curriculum. The curriculum must be more focused on interprofessional communication and collaboration since the academic stage. This implementation can be done well if get full support from the dean and the rector. The teacher staff, dean and rector’s commitment to the implementation of interprofessional education is the demand as well as the hope for the implementation of interprofessional educationConclusion: The obligation to implement interprofessional education is not natural, but it is not impossible. Several things can be done so that doctors graduating from FK UPNVJ can own communication and interprofessional collaboration competencies.
