Abstract

Javanese turmeric rhizome (Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb.) has been known to have many health benefits as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic and anticancer. The purpose of this study was to compare the anti-inflammatory activity of temulawak rhizome extract with its nanoparticles. Temulawak rhizome extract was obatained by maceration using 96% (v/v) ethanol as a solvent. The extracts were made into nanoparticles by ionic gelation method which used chitosan and tripolyphosphate. The results of antiinflammatory activity test using a method of inhibiting protein denaturation showed the persentage of inhibition of protein denaturation (IC50) of the extract of temulawak rhizome of 521.67±5.80 ppm while the IC50 of the nanoparticles was 398.02±1.78 ppm. Accordingly, the antiinflammatory activity of the nanoparticles was better than the extract of temulawak rhizome.

Abstract

Sulfamethazine is an antimicrobial and anticoccidiocis which usually used in poultry farm. The using of sulfamethazine to cattle has an accumulated residue effect on cattle products. An experiment of the decreasing motive of sulfamethazine residue concentration in chicken meat and liver has been carried out. One day old broiler chicken classified into 4 groups which are negative control, the positive control, the 7 days (7 days before the slaughtering day which on 36th day), and 5 days group (5 days before the slaughtering day which on 36th day). The last three groups are given sulfamethazine solution in oral 3 times a week with 0.2 ml/kg BW or 50 mg/kg BW dosage. After the giving of sulfamethazine stopped, each of those 4 groups slaughtered on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 24th, 48th, 120th, 168th, 240th hour and then each of chicken meat and liver extracted and analyzed with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The Sulfamethazine residue decreasing along with the increasing of time can be noticed from the experiment. In common, the decreasing of Sulfamethazine can be seen starting form 24th hour, then at 48th hour the sulfamethazine concentration stay at lower state and decrease along with the increasing of time.

Abstract

Some pre-clinical and clinical studies reported that neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) bark and turmeric (Curcuma domestica Linn.) rhizome extracts demonstrated strong gastroprotective activities. In this studies, the effect of combination of neem bark and turmeric rhizome extracts were investigated on acetosal-induced gastric ulcer in rats. The combination is expected to produce synergic effect on the gastric ulcer. The combination of extracts was administered orally in various doses for 7 days prior to the ulcer induction. On the 8th-day rats were given asetosal 400 mg/kg bw to induce gastric ulcer. All rats were sacrificed 8 hours after asetosal induction for the determination of ulcer index, total acidity, mucus thickness and histophatological examination. The combination of neem bark extract (250 mg/kg bw) and turmeric rhizome extract (50 mg/kg bw) was significantly reduced the ulcer index (a = 0.05). This result was substantiated by histophatological examinations. Results of this study showed that combination of neem bark and turmeric rhizome extracts have synergic gastroprotective activities.

Abstract

Lactic acid bacteria is known to contribute to human health as exopolysaccharide producer, bacteriocin producer, live vaccins, starter in fermentation process and as probiotics. This study aimed to observe Leuconostoc mesenteroides and Weisella confusa strains response under manipulated growth condition for carbon source composition and on pH as a model, using various antibiotics as indicator. MRS and modified MRS (50% normal dextrose concentration) were used. Modification of pH representing acidic and alkaline condition were 4.6 and 9.0. Disc diffusion method was employed using six different antibiotics. Result showed that all strains grown in acidic standard MRS tend to be more sensitive to amoxicillin (Am), chloramphenicol (Ch) and polymyxin B (PoB), but more resistant to ciprofloxacin (Ci), while in the acidic modified MRS, the strains respond more sensitive to Am, Ch, Ci and PoB. When grown in alkaline standard MRS, all strains respond more sensitive to Am, Ci and PoB, but more resistant to Ch, while in alkaline modified MRS, they respond more resistant to Am and Ch but more sensitive to Ci and PoB. Most of the strains did not show inhibition against vancomycin and none of strains showed inhibition against sulphamethoxazole-trimethoprim under conditions applied.

Abstract

Aglaia elliptica Blume is one of plants that contain cyclopenta[b] tetrahydrobenzofuran compound with strong cytotoxic effect on various types of cancer cell lines. The objective of this study is to determine the inhibition effect of ethanol extract of A. elliptica leaves on mammary tumor growth in Sprague Dawley female rats induced by 7.12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA). The study was conducted with induction of 50 female rats with DMBA at a dose of 20 mg/kg orally for 11 times. Twenty-five female rats suffering mammary tumor were divided into 5 groups. Three groups were treated with ethanol extract at a dose of 50, 100 and 200 mg/200 g BW one day after the tumor appeared for 30 days, 1 group as a negative control and 1 group as a positive control (doxorubicin 2 μg/200 g BW). The results showed that the induction of DMBA resulting tumor incidence by 74% and tumor multiplicity of 2 nodules/rat. Histopathological analysis of mammary tumor, suggested that the carcinogenesis has reached the level of ductal carcinoma invasive (DCIV). The administration of ethanol extract at dose of 50, 100 and 200 mg/200 g BW suppressed the growth of mammary tumor volume by 30 %, 33.5% and 37.4%, respectively.
