Abstract

Microplastics are synthetic polymers that are unable to be completely degraded and will stay as an environmental contaminant for a long period of time. Due to their microscopic size, microplastics are able to enter the human body, either directly or indirectly via the food chain, where both processes will induce pathological changes in-vivo. So far, clinically, there has been no direct evidence yet about any microplastic-related disease in humans. However, since Indonesia is a maritime country and has been producing microplastics on a large scale, it is critical for our healthcare personnel to have the knowledge about microplastic toxicokinetics and the possible pathological responses elicited by humans when exposed to microplastics. This review article aims to discuss the definition, genesis, accumulation process, toxicokinetics, and pathological responses due to microplastic exposure, emphasizing the biomolecular aspects and implying the possible effects on public health. An internet search in Google Scholar and Pubmed was performed using keywords "microplastics" and "health", as well as their Indonesian language counterparts. Full-text English or Indonesian text from the year 2018 to 2020 were gathered and used as the primary references for this literature review. Microplastics are a novel emerging contaminant that is currently accumulating in the earth's biomass with the potency to induce pathological changes in the human body. Health practitioners are expected to have knowledge about the harm of microplastic to humans. Eventually, follow-up acts should be taken to prevent and manage the microplastic-related pathologies as discussed further in this review.

Abstract

Pain in the active phase of labor will be felt heavier, sharper, and crampy and result in the spread of pain sensations. Pain and stress during labor can trigger the release of the hormone adrenaline. This hormone can cause the oxygen supply to the fetus to decrease, weaken uterine contractions to prolong the labor process. Prolonged labor pain can cause prolonged labor. The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in the effectiveness of lavender and red lemongrass aromatherapy in reducing pain intensity during the active phase in primiparous mothers. This research is quasi-experimental using pre and post-design without a control group. The study population was primiparous mothers who gave birth at the Brati Health Center and met the inclusion criteria. The sampling technique was non-probability sampling using a simple random sampling method. The study showed that the average pain intensity before giving lavender aromatherapy was 5.14 from 8, while the average labor pain intensity in the red lemongrass group before the intervention was 6.14 from 7.86. This indicates that lavender aromatherapy is more effective. when compared with the decrease in the intensity of physiological pain in primiparas by obtaining data for a mean rank of 19.25. In the red lemongrass group, the mean rank was 9.75. With a p-value of 0.001 (<0.05). From the results of the study, it is hoped that lavender aromatherapy and lemongrass aromatherapy can be applied in health care settings as a therapy to reduce pain intensity during labor.

Abstract

Stunting increases in Indonesia because the practice of complementary feeding has not met the UNICEF program standards. Nutrition education is one of the recommendations to overcome mothers’ feeding practices. This study aims to influence the educational-based interventions on maternal eating practices in Paga Village. This study was quasi-experimental research designed with one pre-test and post-test group and without a control group. The sample of this study involved 45 respondents selected by a total sampling technique. The feeding practices were measured through a questionnaire. The intervention was given three times. The data were analyzed by employing paired sample t-test. There is an effect of education-based intervention interventions on the feeding practice of companion breast milk (p-value 0.00; T-5.223). Changes in better feeding practice occur by fulfilling points of the feeding practice program. This intervention can be an alternative for health workers to continue to promote and for the mothers to apply for feeding practice programs.

Abstract

The maternal mortality rate (MMR) increased from 2007 to 2012. However, based on the 2015 Inter-Censal Population Survey (SUPAS) was decreased. The causes include pregnancy, delivery, and puerperal. The purpose of this study was to analyze delivery risk factors in Lebak Banten in 2019. The cross-sectional study design and data collection were carried out using a questionnaire by interview. The research sample consisted of 120 women of childbearing age who had given birth in Sangiangtanjung Village, Kalanganyar District, Lebak Regency, Banten, and were selected by purposive sampling technique. The variables consisted of delivery methods and 11 independent variables including age, education, occupation, socio-economic, infectious diseases, chronic diseases, hypertension, the danger of pregnancy, the danger of delivery, premature rupture of membranes, and fetal location which were analyzed using multiple logistic regression to determine which variable is most at risk for delivery. It was found that most mothers gave birth normally (90.8%). The remainder performed delivery with measures consisting of vacuum (0.8%) and cesarean delivery (8.4%). The results also showed that women who suffer from hypertension will give birth 7 times greater (95% CI 1.2-39.6) than mothers who do not have hypertension after being controlled by maternal education, chronic disease, and fetal location. There were only one of eleven factors was hypertension which is a risk factor for operative delivery in Lebak Banten. Therefore, it is necessary to promote health to pregnant women to prevent the occurrence of hypertension by health workers to reduce the impact.

Abstract

Overcrowding is one of the factors that contribute to respiratory diseases transmission, including pneumonia. Pneumonia is an infectious disease commonly found and is the most important cause of death for children aged <5. Generally, pneumonia was found in low-income residents from houses overcrowded. This study aims to identify the most dominant risk factors for community pneumonia in children aged <5 years who live in crowded housing in the Work Area of the North Larangan Public Health Center, Tangerang. A case-control study was conducted, with a ratio of cases and controls of 1:1, namely 25 cases and 25 controls. The sampling technique of cases is total sampling, and the control is purposive sampling. This study used univariate, bivariate with chi-square test, and regression logistic for multivariate analysis. Multivariate analysis showed that the risk factors associated with the incidence of pneumonia in children under five who lived in dense housing were exclusive breastfeeding (OR=7.65 (95% CI:1.27-46.07)) and nutritional status (OR=8.79 (95%CI:1.05-73.78)). Reducing the lack of exclusive breastfeeding and improving the underweight dietary status of children can minimize the risk of pneumonia in children under five living in dense housing.

Abstract

Tapioca industrial waste is still a problem and needs to be treated before being discharged into water bodies. The waste generated can be in the form of solid waste, gas waste, and liquid waste. This research is an experimental study and uses tapioca industrial wastewater samples which previously measured the parameters of TSS, BOD, COD, PH, and odor. Then processing is carried out by flowing continuously into the processor with multilevel electro flocculation technology, a combination of activated charcoal sand media with 12-volt electric current using control without activated charcoal sand media. The purpose of the study was to determine the electro flocculation ability of the combination of sand-activated charcoal media (thickness variations of 20cm, 40cm, 60cm, 80cm) in processing tapioca waste. The results showed a decrease in the levels of TSS, BOD, COD, pH, and odor. The most effective reduction was in the variation of activated charcoal sand media with a thickness of 60 cm. The results of the statistical test showed differences in the level of reduction in the pollutant content of tapioca waste TSS, BOD, COD, pH, and odor in the multistage electro flocculation process in the combination of sand–activated charcoal media with a p-value=0.00. The results of the study can be used as an alternative in the processing of tapioca industrial wastewater.

Abstract

Based on BPS data in 2017, around 25 million Indonesians still defecate openly. Many factors influence the ownership of latrines, but research related to factors of employment, family monthly income, and support from community leaders for latrine ownership in Aceh Barat Daya Regency is still rarely done. This study aimed to determine the relationship between employment, family monthly income, and support from community leaders on latrine ownership. This cross-sectional study with a sample of 100 respondents who were randomly selected and scattered in sub-districts was conducted in the urban area of Aceh Barat Daya Regency, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam province. Questionnaires related to respondent characteristics, employment, family monthly income, and support from community leaders, as well as latrine ownership, were collected directly by the researchers through face-to-face interviews from September-October 2021. The statistical tests used were Chi-Square and Mann-Whitney with a significance level of p-value<0.05. The results showed that there was no significant relationship between employment (p-value=0.604), family monthly income (p-value=0.118), and support from community leaders (p-value=0.615) on latrine ownership. In conclusion, there is no relationship between employment factors, family monthly income, and support from community leaders for latrine ownership in Aceh Barat Daya District, Nanggroe Aceh Darusalam province. Village to district governments can offer policies that ensure that every house, owned or rented, must be equipped with proper sanitation facilities. This program can work well if it involves the community, local stakeholders, and landowners.
