Abstract

ICT as a communication transmission tool has long been a strong factor in shaping political mobilization in many social movements in various social and political events in the world. This research aims to describe the Jogja Ora Didol (JOD) movement in utilizing Information and Communication Technology (ICT). JOD is a movement resisting the bad impact of Yogyakarta’s development policies since 2013. Using the case study and employing secondary data, the investigation was conducted on the JOD’s social media, such as Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), and YouTube. We analyzed the utilization of social media in JOD’s movement from some of the features, contents, strategies, messages, and receivers. We also analyzed its impact on offline movement. As a result, we found several findings. First, JOD exploited the features of social media in developing the attractive movement’s strategy. Second, JOD creates a deliberating public space by encouraging anyone to join their movement. Third, the form of participants’ support is according to their capacity and capability. Fourth, JOD used social media to connect online and offline movement agendas. As the impact, fifth, the JOD’s engagement, agenda, and network become strong. In conclusion, we argue that these findings contribute to the current debates between ICT and social movements

Abstract

Islam Jamaah in the context of their practices in society, is often perceived as a group, primarily because most members of society are unaware of their workings. The problem of this research is to prove that Jamaah Tabligh is an organization, not a group. The study aims to find out the internal organization communication the members of Jamaah Tabligh (a religious meeting/congregation) and the patterns of dakwah (missionary endeavor) they apply. The study employs the Goldhaber model of organizational communication with a downward model in relation to leadership, the relationship between superiors and subordinates and the selection of leaders. The study uses the qualitative method. Data is obtained through interviews with seven active members of Jamaah Tabligh. The results of the study reveal that the internal organizational communication of Jamaah Tabligh is a large organization because it has international, national and local headquarters. The organizational communication model is very open and democratic. The leaders try to serve the members of the congregation instead of governing them. The openness of this organizational communication model can be seen in deliberations and has caused Jamaah Tabligh to be favored by lower and middle class people

Abstract

This research aims to find a model of governance for collaborative communication between members of the secretariat and members of the Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD) of Yogyakarta Special Territory (DIY) in the implementation of legislative functions. The methods used are phenomenological methods with qualitative-descriptive research techniques. The research data are obtained from in-depth interviews, face-to-face interviews, the DIY regulatory manuscripts of the DPRD, and meetings relating to rigidity, Propemperda 2020, public hearings, and especially Tree of Mind 2024. These data were analyzed using four theories, namely, the relationship communication theory, the face negotiation theory, the boundary management theory, and the collaborative governance theory. The study obtained the results of 13 models of communication governance in five categories as well as a general model of collaborative communication. In the first category, the communication relationship between board members, fractional staff, and staff members of the secretariat department, four models were found. In the second category, that is, communication relations between council members and staff of the fraction, two models were discovered. The conclusion of this research is that the 13th model of communication governance is a portrait of a phenomenon that needs to be improved in the DIY DPRD environment so that the selection of a common model of collaborative communications governance can support the communication relations of the secretariat and the members of the DIY DPRD in carrying out legislative functions

Abstract

This study aimed to uncover innovative research topics about communication in the post-Covid-19 pandemic. Bibliometric analysis depicted research topic trends within a certain period from big data and online publications on specific sites to find research novelties. Data analysis used VosViewer. Several 1000 of the most relevant 5562 articles were analyzed using network, overlay, and density visualization. Network visualization analysis found 12 clusters with 13 communication topics. Further analysis indicated that three communication topics emerged as central themes. Novelty research was possible on other issues such as public relations, internal communication, communication theory, science communication, misinformation, and public opinion. An overlay visualization analysis revealed eight topics that lacked communication themes in recent COVID-19 research. However, opportunities for novel research were found in issues like information and communication technologies, crisis communication, public relations, internal communication, communication theory, science communication, and public opinion. The density visualization analysis revealed that previous studies focused on communication, risk communication, and social media. Therefore, this study suggests that future communication research during the post-COVID-19 recovery period should explore information and communication technologies, crisis communication, public relations, internal communication, communication theory, science communication, and public opinion.

Abstract

Social media plays a significant role in giving information to first-time voters. It can also be a public sphere for first-time voters to participate in the Presidential Election. The knowledge of first-time voters is influenced by sociological and psychological factors, which are different from the previous generation. This study aims to know democracy literacy among first-time voters, particularly in using social media. Democratic literacy encourages citizens to speak up bravely and criticize the policy. This study uses qualitative research with the Focus Group Discussion method with eight participants. The participants of the FGD are first-time voters actively involved in the student press. The results show that first-time voters have a foundation of democratic literacy so that they are able to analyse the political issues on social media and the hoaxes around political issues. Social media becomes the primary medium for the participants to access political issues, ranging from Instagram, X, and TikTok. These first-time voters conduct only two activities when using social media, namely consuming and participating in political issues, such as giving likes on a post from politicians. However, they do not create political information on social media and choose private spaces to discuss political issues because they are aware of the risks and consequences in discussing politics in social media.

Abstract

This research uncovers symbolic violence in the working practices of journalists in Jakarta. According to Bourdieu, symbolic violence is violence that is invisible to the naked eye, operates with symbols, and is a form of domination from the powerful one to a dominated individual. The researcher argues that the practices in the media industry in Jakarta cannot be separated from the dominated and dominating parties; in this case, the journalists as a party dominated by media structures and source persons. This research uses a qualitative approach with a critical paradigm with a case study method on journalists in Jakarta. Researcher found the practices of symbolic violence that occurred in six journalists in Jakarta are by giving envelopes containing cash to the journalists for favorable coverage and by allowing them to get money from advertisements in exchange for their unpaid work. Researcher also found that they received luxury goods from one of the source persons who was considered to have contributed to the interests of the person. They do not realize and do not care that they are victims of symbolic violence. Those who are victims of symbolic violence are accused by habitus, economic capital, and cultural capital.

Abstract

The development of the religious sector stands as a crucial component within the national development agenda. The government’s endeavors aim to harmonize development programs within this sector, fostering societal independence amid diversity. This research seeks to formulate alternative policy models for ensuring sustainable Islamic development. Adopting a systems thinking approach with dynamic systems methods. The method used is a dynamic system model, which includes the dimensions of the Muslim population submodel, the santri submodel, and the muallaf population submodel. The study deliberately selected Singkawang City as its research location through purposive sampling. Simulations conducted span the period from 2023 to 2033, revealing scenarios within the Muslim community sub-model. The Muslim population sub-model built in the dynamic system is a population dynamics system or human resources in the Muslim community of Singkawang City. Islamic boarding school students sub-model at religious educational institutions and the Muslim convert population sub-model. The muallaf population submodel is the number of muallaf people in Singkawang City. Policy alternatives emerge as priorities for simulations and scenarios in achieving sustainable development of Islamic practices. The analysis of alternative scenarios emphasizes the necessity for support of religious development policies by both the Singkawang City government and the central government. The rise in the Muslim resident population requires proactive measures, such as increasing the number of Islamic religious instructors and strengthening social and religious institutions dedicated to religious programs. Furthermore, efforts in Islamic religious education are crucial for enhancing human resources. Improved religious programs tailored to the Muslim populace, including religious guidance and convert-based empowerment initiatives, serve as integral components of sustainable Islamic development.

Abstract

This research uses virtual ethnography to analyze TikTok usage patterns and the phenomenon of communication ecstasy among students in Palopo City. The qualitative field research method employed involves the use of questionnaires, interviews, observation, and documentation. A total of 53 students from universities in Palopo City participated in the questionnaire, and four were selected for further analysis through interviews. Data were analyzed using reduction techniques, presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results reveal that TikTok usage is prevalent among students, with daily use averaging over three hours per day. The purpose of use varies, including entertainment, information seeking, stress relief, hobby expression, and money-making. The phenomenon of communication ecstasy is evident in students' addiction to digital symbols like "like," "comment," "share," and "save." TikTok features enable students to immerse themselves in total simulation, blurring the lines between reality and virtuality, representation and reference, and facilitating the creation of simulacra and hyperreality. The implications suggest that TikTok is significantly altering communication patterns among students, leading to a shift from in-depth, meaningful interactions to more superficial, symbolic exchanges. This shift fosters a pseudo-environment where students can meticulously curate and project an idealized version of themselves, further obscuring the boundaries between authenticity and performance. As a result, the emphasis on visual storytelling and viral trends can lead to a culture of comparison and validation, potentially impacting students' self-esteem and social skills in the long term
