Abstract

This study investigates the rhetorical strategies employed by Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) in his concession speech following the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election. The research focuses specifically on AHY’s political rhetoric as a form of strategic communication used to construct political legitimacy, maintain public credibility, and shape post-electoral public perception after defeat. Using a qualitative approach within a constructivist paradigm, this study applies Andersen’s Model of Political Rhetoric as the primary analytical framework, complemented by Aristotelian rhetorical concepts to interpret persuasive dimensions within the speech. The unit of analysis consists of rhetorical segments, sentence structures, and symbolic expressions contained in AHY’s concession speech broadcast by CNN Indonesia on 15 February 2017. Data were collected through document analysis and analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding to identify recurring rhetorical patterns and thematic categories. The findings demonstrate that AHY’s concession rhetoric emphasizes epideictic and deliberative dimensions through the strategic use of gratitude, moral appeals, democratic values, and religious expressions. The speech also reflects dominant elements of ethos and logos, particularly in constructing an image of political maturity, emotional stability, and ethical leadership. This study contributes to the development of political rhetoric studies in Indonesia by providing a contextual analysis of concession speeches as a form of post-electoral political communication within democratic processes

Abstract

This conceptual study develops a maqasid-based governance framework for Islamic journalism in the post-truth era. The increasing circulation of disinformation, algorithmic bias, and ethical challenges in digital communication environments has raised concerns regarding cognitive security, social cohesion, and national resilience. Using an integrative literature review approach, this study analyzes 20 scholarly sources indexed in Scopus and other relevant academic databases published between 2023 and 2025. The analysis identifies four key governance dimensions of Islamic journalism: cognitive security, ideological cohesion, digital sovereignty, and civic empowerment. Based on these dimensions, the study proposes the Tauhidi Algorithmic Journalism Model, which consists of maslahah-oriented content filtering, real-time tabayyun verification, ethical narrative prioritization, and algorithmic transparency. In addition, the study introduces a preliminary Digital Tauhid Index as a conceptual instrument for assessing the alignment of digital platforms with Islamic communication ethics. The contribution of this study is primarily conceptual, providing a theoretical framework for strengthening Islamic journalism governance in digital media ecosystems. As the proposed model and index have not yet been empirically validated, further expert evaluation and field-based research are required to assess their applicability and effectiveness.

Abstract

Digital advances have revolutionised communication patterns and the formation of opinion, including perceptions of Islamic law. In Aceh, which has formally implemented Islamic law for over 23 years, the dynamics of online media reporting have become a crucial factor in shaping its image and the construction of religious identity. This article analyses the role of Serambinews.com in framing news coverage about Islamic law in Aceh. From 9 articles found via a search using the keyword “Syariat Islam” on the site, 7 articles met the inclusion criteria as factual news reports and were analysed using Entman’s framing model (problem definition, causal interpretation, moral evaluation, treatment recommendation). The seven articles were purposely selected from the period of November 2024. This period was chosen based on the intensity of reporting related to the evaluation of sharia implementation after more than 23 years. While existing studies have discussed media representation of Islamic law in Indonesia, limited attention has been paid to how local online media in Aceh construct framing that legitimizes sharia enforcement. This study specifically addresses that gap by offering a systematic framing analysis of Serambinews.com. The results indicate that Serambinews.com consistently frames Islamic law as a solution for moral and social order. The legitimacy of its implementation is affirmed through narratives highlighting broad public support, claims of tolerance from interfaith figures, and institutional collaboration with educational bodies. The reporting tends to present a singular narrative without critical views, which contributes to the discursive construction of Sharia as a legitimate public norm in Aceh. However, given the limited empirical scope (seven articles from one outlet over one month) these findings should be interpreted with caution and are not generalizable to all local media in Aceh.

Abstract

The rapid growth of social media among university students has led to an escalation of data exploitation and privacy breaches. This study aims to investigate how digital literacy functions as a proactive resilience strategy among students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Riau, focusing on how the four pillars of digital skills, ethics, safety, and culture contribute to safeguarding personal information. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with purposive sampling, data were collected through documentation, observations, and in-depth interviews with four active Instagram users, including campus influencers. The findings reveal that students demonstrate strategic resilience by actively applying digital literacy as a defense mechanism. They utilize advanced security settings, such as two-factor authentication, perform critical source verification to mitigate misinformation, and maintain boundaries between personal and professional digital identities to manage their online reputation. Furthermore, students display ethical responsibility and data security practices, enhancing their adaptive capacity against systemic privacy threats. This study concludes that digital literacy serves as a crucial strategic instrument to maximize internet benefits while mitigating unanticipated privacy risks. The novelty lies in redefining digital literacy as a performative resilience strategy rather than a passive skill set for navigating modern data vulnerabilities

Abstract

This study examines how verbal, visual, and institutional signs construct persuasive meanings in a public service advertisement (PSA) promoting Indonesia’s migration from analog to digital television. The study analysed the PSA video “Yuk, Beralih ke TV Digital” uploaded by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) on YouTube using a qualitative Saussurean semiotic framework. Eleven scenes were segmented by timestamp, and observable signifiers were interpreted in relation to their associated signified concepts and persuasive functions. The analysis identified five meaning structures: analog television as a problem, digital migration as technically simple, digital broadcasting as accessible and subscription-free, digital television as modern and beneficial, and governmental authority as a source of policy legitimacy. The study analyses meaning construction in the advertisement rather than campaign effectiveness or audience reception.

Abstract

The internet and social media have become open spaces highly vulnerable to the spread of radical group propaganda, hoaxes, and hate speech. This condition has driven the emergence of digital literacy movements as a societal response to the various negative impacts of digital media. Digital literacy among religious groups is considered one of the effective approaches to countering misleading and divisive information. This study aims to measure the level of digital literacy among female students at the Diniyah Putri Islamic Higher Education Institution in Padang Panjang, using ten digital literacy competency indicators developed by Japelidi (Jaringan Pegiat Literasi Digital / Digital Literacy Activist Network). The research employs a mixed method sequential explanatory model, beginning with a quantitative approach to obtain a general overview, followed by qualitative methods to deepen the understanding of the quantitative data. The findings reveal that the students possess a moderate level of digital literacy, with a total index score of 76.9%. The highest component is the ability to access digital information, with an index score of 87.2%, indicating their technical proficiency in locating and retrieving information online. In contrast, the lowest score is found in the ability to collaborate digitally, at 66.3%, reflecting limited use of digital media for cooperative work and productive interaction. These findings highlight the need for a more holistic enhancement of digital literacy, particularly in the collaborative dimension, within religious educational environments
