Abstract

Chemical Bonding is one of the chemicals with abstract concepts, and is admittedly difficult to understand and often leads to misconceptions in students. This study aims to identify student misconception on the concept of Chemical Bonding. The method used in this research is quantitative descriptive. The study was conducted on 31 January to 6 February 2018. The subjects of this study are X grade students academic year 2017/2018 with the number of samples of 48 students. The misconception identification was performed using a four-tier multiple-choice (4TMC) test instrument. Students' answers from the 4TMC test are then analyzed and categorized based on the students' level of understanding. The results showed that there was a misconception of 30.31% (low category). Significant misconceptions are identified as 8 out of 13 subconcepts of the Chemical Bonding they are Lewis Structure and the Octet Rule (33.33%), Metal Bond and Metal Properties (20.83%), Ionic Compounds and Covalent Compounds (27.08%) , Theory of VSEPR (20.83%), Electron Domain Theory (18.75%), Polarity of Molecul (27.08%), Van der Waals Forces (14.58%), and Hydrogen Bond (29.17%). The result of identification of students' misconception is expected to be helpful in handling misconception at student earlier so as not to hamper students in learning. Abstract

This purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between cognitive load and understanding students' concepts in salt hydrolysis material. The subjects were 96 students of class XI MIA 1, XI MIA 6 and XI MIA 7 at SMAN 2 Cibinong. Research conducted based on the problem of a person's ability to receive and process information that exceeds the required memory capacity will increase cognitive load. The method used in this study is descriptive correlational. The results of the hypothesis with Spearman Rank obtained a significant negative relationship for salt hydrolysis material, so it can be concluded that low cognitive load will generate a high understanding of concepts. Keywords: Cognitive load, concept understanding, hydrolysis of the salt

Abstract

This research is aimed to find out the uses of concept maps as instruments of assessment students’ conceptual understanding through PDEODE learning model on acid-base materials. This research uses qualitative methods, conducted at SMAN Jakarta in the second semester. The participants were the 36 students of grade XI MIPA in one of Senior High School in Jakarta. The treatment is given based on Predict-Discuss-Explain-Observe-Discuss-Explain (PDEODE). The research data was obtained from the assessment of concept maps, observations, and interviews. The assessment of concept map uses the Novak and Gowin assessment rubric which added concepts. The results showed concept map can be used as an instrument for assessing conceptual understanding and misconception of students. The PDEODE learning model affects the process of students in understanding the concept of acid-base. Conceptual understanding of students is classified as medium and low criteria. Through concept maps can be identified misconceptions experienced by students especially on the theory of acid-base. Keywords Concept Maps, Conceptual Understanding, PDEODE, Acid-Base, Assessment

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the application of cooperative learning models type Group Investigation based ICT on students' communication skills. This research was conducted with quantitative methods. The sampling technique uses purposive sampling. Learning was carried out in one experimental class and one control class by applying cooperative learning models type GI based ICT and non ICT. The research instrument uses statement questions that have been declared valid and reliable. The results of hypothesis testing of two independent samples obtained t stat (2,897)> t table (1,667), so it can be concluded that there is a positive influence on the application of cooperative learning type Group Investigation based ICT on students’ communication skills. Further analysis on each indicator of communication skills, it can be seen that indicators identifying problems, gathering information, and drawing conclusions have a significant influence on the results of the experimental class and the control class. While indicators write summaries and use good grammar and spelling, there is no significant influence between the experimental class and the control class. Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of REACT strategy on the chemical literacy of 10th grade students on learning redox reactions. The survey conducted in the even semester of the 2018/2019 academic year at one of public senior high school in Jakarta. The method used in this research was Quasi Experiment with Posttest Only Control Group Design. The sample used in this study was obtained through a purposive sampling technique to get two classes, X MIA 2 as an experimental class applied REACT strategy, and X MIA 1 as a control class applied active learning. The data was taken based on pretest and posttest score from using chemical literacy instruments. The results showed that the average posttest score of experimental class (67,324) was higher than the control class (54,030). Based on the calculation of the t-test obtained the value of count (3.827) and table (1,668) at the significance level of 5%. Therefore, the value of count > table, Then H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. So, it can be concluded that the use of REACT strategy has a positive effect on student’s chemical literacy on redox reaction material. Keywords Chemical literacy, redox reactions, REACT strategy

Abstract

This study was aimed to develop students’ conceptual understanding in material “electrolyte and non-electrolyte solution” using 8E Learning Cycle model. The study involved 36 students in 10th grader of Math and Science Studies senior high school in Jakarta. Data collection techniques used was interview, concept understanding test, reflective journal and students’ worksheet. Based on the research, the result shows that by using 8E Learning Cycle model , the students’ understanding toward the concepts in sub-material of the solution characteristics and the nature of the solution are increased. Referring to the graph, students’ concept understanding increased to 96% in the sub-material of the characteristics of the solution. Besides, the students’ understanding toward sub-material of the nature of solution increased to 80%. The biggest misconception occurs at the explore stage, this is caused by the students initial knowledge. Students are able to group the electrolyte and non-electrolyte solutions correctly based on the ionization of the solution, but the students are not able to connect the electrolyte and non-electrolyte solutions to the type of bond. In learning process, 8E learning cycle model is not only used as instrumental in developing students' concepts understanding, but also this model plays a role in developing the students’ communication skill and collaboration skill in chemistry learning. Keywords 8E learning cycle model, conceptual understanding, electrolyte and non-electrolyte solutions

Abstract

This study aims to find out the misconceptions that occur in buffer solution materials using two-tier diagnostic tests instrument. The instrument was developed based on the buffer solution material competency indicators into 10 questions and was declared valid for use. The research was conducted on level I and III college students and students totaling 159. The results showed that there was a misconception on the concept of buffer solution properties of 24.6%, the concept of buffer solution composition was 24.1%, the working principle of buffer solution was 29.3 %, and the concept of pH solution is 25.4%. he cause of the misconception is because the initial concept of the respondent is weak, the teacher's explanation often simplifies the concept, the habit of the respondent to memorize, understanding the language and weak mathematical concepts, and learning models that have not provided the opportunity for respondents to understand the components and principles of working buffer solutions microscopically. Knowledge of misconceptions is needed as an evaluation of teachers and lecturers to be more motivated to implement learning models that are able to overcome misconceptions to prevent wider misconceptions in learning chemistry that make chemistry difficult. Keywords Misconception, Two-Tier Diagnostic Test, Buffer Solution
