Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of deixis in Donald Trump’s 2024 Victory Speech. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the research focuses on analyzing the types and frequency of deixis found within the speech text. The primary data source is the official transcript of the speech. The research process involved collecting, selecting, and reducing relevant data, particularly sentences or words containing deixis. The data were then displayed and analyzed to identify the types of deixis used. The study concludes by interpreting the findings and determining the most dominant type of deixis in the speech delivered by Donald Trump. Based on the analysis, five types of deixis were identified: person deixis, spatial or place deixis, temporal or time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. A total of 344 deictic expressions were found in the speech. Among these, person deixis was the most frequently used, with 279 occurrences, representing 81.10% of the total. This suggests that Donald Trump heavily relied on personal references, such as pronouns like “I,” “we,” “you,” and “they,” to engage his audience and emphasize personal and collective identity. The dominance of person deixis indicates a rhetorical strategy aimed at establishing a strong connection with listeners, reinforcing solidarity, and asserting leadership. The findings highlight the importance of deixis as a linguistic tool in political discourse, particularly in persuasive and emotionally charged speeches. This study contributes to the broader understanding of how linguistic features like deixis function in political communication to influence public perception and audience response.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the types of figurative language and the meanings conveyed through Peter Drury's reflections in an interview with The Athletic. Peter Drury is widely known for his poetic style of football commentary, and his interview provides rich linguistic material to explore how figurative expressions reflect personality, emotion, and professional identity. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, using a semantic analysis approach to examine the forms and meanings of figurative language found in the interview transcript. The analysis draws on the theoretical framework of Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980) Conceptual Metaphor Theory and other supporting semantic theories relevant to figurative meaning interpretation. The findings reveal that metaphor is the most dominant type of figurative language, comprising 81.8% of the data, followed by personification and idiomatic expressions at 9.1% each. Drury’s frequent use of metaphor, such as describing his sensitivity to criticism as lacking “thick skin,” expresses his vulnerability to public judgment and highlights the emotional burden carried by a public figure. Meanwhile, idioms and personification illustrate his deep connection with language as not only a tool for communication, but also a medium that shapes his identity and creative expression as a commentator. The study concludes that figurative language in the interview contributes significantly to constructing a narrative that resonates emotionally with audiences, revealing Drury’s humility, passion, and philosophical outlook on his career. This research contributes to the fields of linguistics and media discourse studies by emphasizing the role of figurative language in shaping meaningful and memorable public communication.

Abstract

Murals, usually seen as decorations on walls have didactic, aesthetic, and spiritual connotations. Historically, they have been done for aesthetic and documentation of cultural practices and philosophies of the recipient culture. They are also used for rituals and to keep records of the cultural environment across time as evident in images found in ancestral caves and rock representations. The Asante of Ghana is known for elaborate indigenous architecture with abstract and culturally embedded imagery. most of these architectures, which were part of the heritage of the Asante Kingdom, have been lost to war and time. Some surviving indigenous architecture with remarkable murals in Asante includes shrine houses and a few ancient palaces, which have been designated as world heritage sites. With the advent of modern public and domestic architecture and the redesigning of Kumasi into a British Colonial “Garden City”, these decorations are not just fading away but losing their cultural essence. The study used a qualitative phenomenology and a narratological approach to source primary data from participants in six selected Indigenous communities of Asante through purposive and simple random sampling. The study unearthed the spiritual essence and philosophies of the Asante shrine murals embedded in the people’s traditional symbols and proverbial sayings as a way of maintaining their unique identity as its main findings. Authors thus recommend the incorporation of such traditional symbols, especially the endangered/extinct ones into modern architectural designs and mural representations to reinforce history and cultural identity.

Abstract

Emerging as the latest technological innovation, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has effected drastic changes in the conduct of bureaucratic processes in government agencies. This qualitative multiple case study outlines how the personnel of Tourism Offices of three Local Government Units (LGUs) in the province of Bulacan in the Philippines are acceptant of the use of AI in cultural program promotions. The researchers explored the openness of the bureaucracy to AI use in cultural promotions. For this purpose, the Bureaucracy Openness to Artificial Intelligence Conceptual Framework, a modified version of Technology-Organization-Environment framework, was utilized to determine factors that encourage openness to AI use in LGUs. In-depth Email Interviews with Tourism Office personnel of the LGUs were conducted to discover how openness is shaped by different factors and contribute to the effectiveness and efficiency of cultural promotions. Organizational and cultural factors contributory to openness were discovered to be common among LGUs. Environmental factors were found to be non-determinants of openness to AI use in two cases; technological factors, in one case. Two LGUs are certain that openness to AI tools contributes to cultural promotion effectiveness and efficiency. The research findings provide evidence on the positive attitude of LGUs towards AI usage in cultural program promotions.

Abstract

Children are creations of God who need to be protected and whose rights must be fulfilled. The first and foremost party responsible for providing this protection and fulfillment of rights is the family. However, in reality, the fulfillment of children's rights in Indonesia is still far from perfect. Undang-Undang No 35 Tahun 2014 about Child Protection is one of the regulations in force in Indonesia that provides legal certainty in the protection of children's rights. When parents and families are unable to protect the child, the government is obliged to provide protection through child protection institutions. This research focuses on Social Protection in Fulfilling Children's Rights at LKSA Taman Harapan Muhammadiyah in Bandung City. This study uses a qualitative research method, with primary data obtained through in-depth interview guidelines and secondary data from written documents and physical observation at the research site. This study uses purposive sampling techniques. The findings from the field show that the implementation of social protection carried out by LKSA Muhammadiyah includes the following programs: first, physical and health services through facilities provided by the Foundation in cooperation with zakat and charity services at Muhammadiyah Hospital, where all foster children receive free medical care; second, mental-spiritual services to help children develop a balanced and positive personality through Quran memorization activities, congregational prayer, mandatory tahajjud prayer, and daily recitation of one juz; third, educational services, where all foster children receive free education from elementary to high school, and those with academic achievements are awarded scholarships for college; and fourth, skills training services, offering various skill options according to the children’s interests and talents, such as life skills, vocational skills including sewing, cooking, computer skills, and graphic design. Abstract

Children in conflict with the law (CICL) often experience moderate levels of self-motivation when undergoing social rehabilitation. This study examines self-motivation using the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory, which consists of seven dimensions: Interest/Enjoyment, Perceive Competence, Effort/Usefulness, Pressure/Tension, Perceived Choice, Value/Usefulness and Relatedness with Counsellor. This study aims to explore how indigenous social work approaches rooted in Sundanese cultural values silih asih, silih asah, silih asuh (mutual love, mutual learning, and mutual guidance) can contribute to strengthening self-motivation among CICL. Using a quantitative descriptive method with 37 respondents at UPTD Griya Bina Karsa, West Java. The findings reveal that 75.68% of participants demonstrate a moderate level of self-motivation. The moderate scores were found in the aspects of perceived choice (78.38%), pressure/tension (72.97%), and connectedness with mentors (81.08%). These results highlight the importance of integrating local cultural values into rehabilitation practices. By embedding indigenous social work principles, rehabilitation programs can reduce psychological tension, foster stronger relationships between children and mentors, and encourage autonomy in decision-making. Such an approach not only improves individual motivation but also reaffirms cultural heritage as a source of resilience and social transformation.

Abstract

This research examines Pasuruan City as a cultural heritage landscape shaped by colonial, Islamic, and multi-ethnic layers that continue to color the dynamics of its urban space. The research aims to identify how this heritage is interpreted and integrated into tourism development while uncovering the obstacles that arise in the preservation process and community participation. A qualitative method with an ethnographic approach was employed, utilizing participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and analysis of archives and policy documents. Research subjects included local residents, cultural actors, and local government representatives directly involved in heritage management. The data were analyzed using thematic interpretation to understand the interconnections between historical narratives, urban spatial patterns, and tourism practices. The findings indicate that Pasuruan displays a cultural palimpsest, where colonial buildings, religious sites, and multicultural areas intertwine to form a distinctive urban identity. However, the fragmentation of heritage asset ownership, weak management, and the absence of a connecting narrative between clusters remain major obstacles. In conclusion, a multi-stakeholder strategy is necessary, involving the government, communities, and cultural asset owners, to enable heritage to serve a dual function: as a pillar of collective memory and as a driver for sustainable tourism and the city's creative economy.
