Abstract

Key words: keterampilan menulis, praise-question-polish (PQP) teknik,Hortatory Exposition,

Abstract

Title/judul, Headings/bagian atas atau kepala text, introduction/ pengenalan atau pengantar text, Every first sentence/ kalimat pertama dalam text, visual/ media sebagai alat peraga, end of text/ akhir dari text, summary/ kesimpulan dari text.

Abstract

Many students have difficulties in speaking, especially junior high school students. Some of the problems faced by junior high school students are the students do not want to talk or say anything. They feel shy to speak in front of their friends and afraid of making mistakes. Also, Ur (2012:118) states that the students are often frustrated to speak in a foreign language in the classroom because they scared of criticism or losing face, or shy of the attention. Furthermore, they keep using their own language (mother tongue). These difficulties show the necessary activities or technique must be designed by the teacher in the classroom in order to enable the students to produce a meaningful English oral performance as well as to overcome their problems and weakness. One of the techniques that the teacher can apply is elicitation technique. Elicitation describes procedures that allow the teacher to get the students to provide information rather than give it to them. One way to elicit is by asking questions. Asking questions is the main technique for getting ideas and responses from the students.

An article entitled “An Analysis of English Teachers’ Code Switching and Code Mixing in Classroom Instructions at SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP” aims at determining codes mostly used by the English teachers and the functions of classroom code-switching and code-mixing. To meet the need of this research, the subject of this research was 3 English teachers at SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP. The data of this research was the English teachers’ utterances which contain code-switching (CS) and/or code-mixing (CM). The instrument used was an audio-video recorder which recorded the classroom conversation. To know the codes mostly used by the English teachers, the data were analyzed to see the what codes occur in teachers’ utterances. Moreover, the data were analyzed using 3 categories of functions of classroom CS and CM proposed by Ferguson (2003) to determine the functions of classroom CS and CM. The results showed that the code mostly used by the English teachers in delivering lesson was Bahasa Indonesia. Then, the other dominant codes were English, switching and/or mixing English – Bahasa Indonesia, and switching and/or mixing Bahasa Indonesia – English. In addition, the functions of classroom CS and CM were for curriculum access, classroom management, and interpersonal relation, in which classroom CS and CM for curriculum access was dominantly found in the teachers’s CS and CM. The finding of this research was the English teachers did more code-switching and code-mixing than target language in delivering the lessons, since the classroom activities’ purpose was to transmit subject content not to develop linguistic skills.

Abstract

The writer will discuss about teaching reading comprehension to senior high school by using the reciprocal teaching technique. This technique was firstly introduced by Annemarie Palinscar and Ann Brown in 1984. There are several goals in implementing the reciprocal teaching technique on descriptive text, such as to help students finding main ideas and specific information in the text and to help students in improving the vocabulary. This technique is not only limited to descriptive text, but also to many other kinds of text. By using this technique, the students are expected to be more interested in reading since they are actively involved in the process.
