Abstract

This study aims to examine the dynamics of Singkawang City's development in the 20th century. This development was marked by the growth of various urban infrastructures that supported the economy and population mobility, causing the city to transform from a traditional city into a colonial city. This study employs a qualitative method using literature review, drawing on written sources such as books, journal articles, and various studies previously conducted that are related to Singkawang City. The findings of this study indicate that the transformation of Singkawang City from a traditional city to a colonial city was marked by the Dutch beginning to build infrastructure, establish administrative governance, and implement policies within the city. The growth of Catholic missionaries during this period also brought changes to Singkawang City, particularly in the fields of education and health, as they helped build various facilities such as Catholic churches, schools, and hospitals. The transition from a traditional city to a colonial one did not erase the multicultural identity of Singkawang's society, as the changes occurred primarily in infrastructure and government administration.

Abstract

Group Investigation is a learning model that is considered appropriate and effective in learning history in the era of society 5.0, but in an era that continues to develop and is fast-paced, the challenges faced in implementing group investigation strategies also vary. In line with these problems, the author intends to provide solutions related to the challenges faced in implementing the Group Investigation learning model in learning history in the era of society 5.0. This research uses a qualitative approach to the literature study method, through the technique of collecting sources relevant to the discussion within the last 10 years. Secondary data was obtained through interviews with teachers in a private institution randomly to ask about the problems experienced by teachers and students at this time. The results of this study show four challenges in applying the group investigation model to learning in the era of society 5.0 including, the character of students today, the background of teachers in accepting technology, the misuse of technology by students, and the uneven distribution of the use of learning. This problem is based on several aspects including individual students, teachers, and schools. The role of teachers in facing this challenge is crucial, where teachers are the main actors in the classroom. So it requires teachers to create a conducive and systematic learning environment. In line with this statement, the solution provided not only refers to the needs of students in teaching and learning activities but also involves teacher creativity in implementing learning. So that the challenges in applying the group investigation learning model can be resolved easily and accurately.

Abstract

The existence of ethnic Arab descendants in Batavia is an interesting thing to explore, given their status as ethnic migrants, but received a good welcome by the local community. This paper on “Kapitan Arab in Batavia” is a portrait of the social life of ethnic Arab descendants in building and forming a community in Batavia. The study begins in 1844, when Said Na'um was appointed as the first Arab Kapitan, and ends in 1942 with the end of Dutch colonial rule which also formally ended the existence of the Batavian Arab Kapitan. This research is conducted through the historical method, which goes through the stages of topic selection, heuristics, verification, interpretation and historiography. This paper argues that the Arab Kapitan of Batavia had an initial role as a liaison between the policies of the colonial government and the Arab community, as well as seeking progress in the fields of trade and education. However, the hadrami-style stratification pattern in Batavia sometimes triggered conflicts between groups, such as between the Jamiat Kheir and Al Irsyad groups. Among the Arab Kapitans of Batavia, the figure of Kapitan Umar Manggus is important as a community leader who helped drive change. He led the Arab community in the midst of a reform wave that rejected the exclusivity of the sayyids. His background as part of the lower stratification placed him as an agent of change to shape the Batavian Arab community to become more egalitarian.  The colonial government's attitude tended to be passive, because not being involved in the vortex of conflict would be more beneficial in maintaining the order.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low historical awareness of students at SMA Negeri 1 Lawang despite their high academic performance in history. This is due to the use of monotonous and uninteractive learning media. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the Linimasa Card Game (LCG) media on students' historical awareness and academic performance in grade XI. The method used is quantitative with a quasi-experimental design of the non-equivalent control group type. The sample consists of 34 students in the control group and 35 students in the experimental group. Data analysis techniques included validity, reliability, normality, independent t-test, MANOVA, and simple linear regression tests. The results showed that the Linimasa Card Game (LCG) media significantly influenced historical awareness (Sig. 0.001 < 0.05) and learning outcomes (Sig. 0.008 < 0.05). The MANOVA test showed a Sig. value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating the simultaneous effect of the media on both variables. The regression test showed that historical awareness contributed 46.9% to learning outcomes. The posttest average of the experimental class was higher than that of the control class, both in terms of historical awareness and learning outcomes. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of the Linimasa Card Game (LCG) is effective in improving students' historical awareness and learning outcomes.

Abstract

This article explores humanist values in Thomas Stamford Raffles' work, The Statement of Service, which acts as his defense against the accusations during his time in the Indonesian Archipelago. It uses a descriptive qualitative method with in-depth text analysis. The findings show that Raffles promoted humanist principles in his colonial policies, such as abolishing slavery, respecting local culture, and improving education. These policies reflect the influence of secular humanism, which Raffles embraced through his affiliation with the Freemason organization. However, the study also highlights contradictions between Raffles' humanist ideals and the colonial practices of his era. The research suggests further study on the relevance of Raffles' ideas to colonialism and modern humanism.

The background for implementing the Smallholder Cotton Intensification Program in Grobogan Regency was because the area was rainfed land and moor or dry rice fields, so it was very promising for the development of cotton in the area. The method used in compiling this article is the historical method which consists of four stages, namely heuristics, criticism, interpretation and historiography. Through this research, the fact was obtained that the implementation of the Smallholder Cotton Intensification Program in Grobogan Regency could be said to be successful because it was supported by several factors such as the type of land suitable for planting cotton, the planting area that was still available, the response of farmers who were willing to accept the presence of the program because they had felt the good results so that it was considered a commodity that could increase their income, as well as good coordination between the Grobogan Regency Plantation Service and the Plantations Limited Company of Indonesia (PT. Perkebunan, PTP) XVIII as the management in successing the implementation of the program. Thus, it can be concluded that the successful implementation of the Smallholder Cotton Intensification Program had influenced the socio-economic life of farmers in Grobogan Regency, such as the establishment of farmer groups, wider employment opportunities, and increasing amount of farmer incomes as well.

Abstract

The study of toponymy and colonial influences in Asia in the SN manuscript is useful for making significant contributions to the understanding of toponymy, colonial influence, and historical context in Asia, especially through the lens of the Serat Ngelmu Bumi Asia 1860 manuscript. The purpose of this study is to analyze the history of place names that have been influenced by colonialism. Which places are written in the SNBA manuscript, namely a manuscript containing the geographical conditions of the Asian continent in 1860.  The methods used in this study are literature study, philological research methods, and toponymy studies. The results of this study indicate that place names in Asia, especially those recorded in the SNBA manuscript of 1860, reflect significant colonial influence. Many place names recorded in the SNBA manuscript, such as India Depan, India Belakang, and Ceylon, show changes that occurred due to decolonization and foreign cultural influences. Changes in place names often reflect the dominance and political interests of the colonizers. The colonizers used new names or changed place names to show their power. The use of foreign languages in place naming, often derived from the language of the colonizer, influences the way place names are identified and used.

Abstract

Sabung ayam, or cockfighting, is a game with a long history in the Nusantara region, extending to Southeast Asia. Its implementation has been ongoing since the classical era, continuing to this day, with various applications, including entertainment for kings, religious rituals, public games, and even illegal games. Fighting and betting in the cockfighting arena are narrated periodically in various historical sources, with various changes, uniformity, and diversity in narrative, substance, and perspective that describe conditions in each era. For this reason, this study is significant to question the change in the meaning of cockfighting based on the narrative presented by local and European sources. By using the historical method, this study emphasizes the use of local sources in the form of oral traditions, as well as European sources in the form of ethnographic works, travel notes, colonial government archives, and mass media coverage. In general, this study produces three important findings. First, cockfighting is a game that is often held in the royal environment with a twist of betting based on the narrative of oral tradition. Second, European records interpret cockfighting as a 'national' public entertainment, with the negative stigma of betting that accompanies it. Third, cockfighting became a prohibited game due to the essence of gambling based on colonial legal provisions, and its practice became a form of crime that was widely reported by the mass media. The change in the meaning of cockfighting historically led to the current condition of the problem of criminality in its practice that closely combines aspects of fighting and betting in one unit.

Abstract

Indonesia's civic and educational landscape has increasingly been fragmented by the rise of identity politics, ideological polarization, and the erosion of inclusive nationalism. Amidst this crisis, the educational thought of Nurcholish Madjid (Cak Nur) offers a transformative weltanschauung, a synthesis of Islamic ethics, national consciousness, and modern rationality. This study aims to critically investigate Madjid’s educational paradigm within the framework of wawasan kebangsaan (national insight), repositioning education not as dogmatic transmission but as civic moral formation. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach with critical historiographical methods, the research analyzes primary sources, including Madjid’s writings, interviews with key intellectuals, and institutional records, from 1971 to 2002. Anchored in the theories of Karl Mannheim and Antonio Gramsci, the study interprets Madjid as an organic intellectual whose vision is institutionalized through Universitas Paramadina, Madania School, and the Nurcholish Madjid Society. The findings reveal that Madjid’s inclusive educational praxis serves as both a moral critique and a civic alternative to ideological extremism in Indonesian schooling. His vision bridges Islam and Pancasila, integrates character education with democratic citizenship, and promotes pluralism as a religious imperative. The novelty of this research lies in contextualizing Madjid’s pedagogy as an instrument for rebuilding national character in postcolonial education, rather than reducing it to liberal theology. This paper contributes to global debates on religion, education, and civic ethics by proposing a homegrown Indonesian model that reconciles faith, diversity, and democracy. Madjid’s weltanschauung remains a viable blueprint for inclusive, ethical, and future oriented national education.
