Abstract

The discourse surrounding the recitation of Basmalah in Al-Fatihah during prayer has consistently been a contentious issue within society, particularly between members of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah. This divergence arises from differences in perspectives and variations in the interpretation of istidlāl (legal reasoning) derived from hadith used by both groups. This study examines the methods and approaches employed by NU and Muhammadiyah in understanding, interpreting, and formulating legal rulings based on hadith. The research focuses on two primary questions: First, what methods are implemented by NU and Muhammadiyah in istidlāl hadith? Second, what narrations serve as their foundational basis for legal rulings? These questions are explored through a descriptive-analytical method grounded in literature review. The findings reveal that; first, NU and Muhammadiyah each have dedicated institutions tasked with understanding Islamic legal sources and issuing fatwas—namely, the Lembaga Bahtsul Masail for NU and the Majelis Tarjih for Muhammadiyah; second, Nahdlatul Ulama employs the qauly, ilhaqy, and manhajy methods in interpreting Islamic legal sources, whereas Muhammadiyah utilizes the bayani, ta'lili, and istishlahi methods; and third, Regarding the recitation of Basmalah in prayer, NU considers it obligatory and recommends its recitation aloud (jahr), based on istidlāl qauli referring to Imam Shafi'i's opinion in Al-Umm. In contrast, Muhammadiyah allows for Basmalah to be recited either silently (sirr) or aloud (jahr), using the bayani method, which draws on hadith narrated by Imam Malik in Al-Muwatta’, offering a more flexible interpretation of the recitation of Basmalah.

Abstract

Technological advances in the post-multimedia era have brought about significant changes in various aspects of life, including in the understanding and dissemination of hadith. Multimedia technology provides faster and wider access to hadith literature, allowing Muslims to access authentic sources more easily. Nevertheless, this transformation also poses challenges in maintaining the authenticity and preservation of the tradition of hadith understanding that has developed over the centuries. This research aims to explore how the development of multimedia technology affects the transformation of people's understanding of hadith and how it interacts with efforts to maintain the interpretive traditions inherited by classical scholars. Using a qualitative method with an interpretive-hermeneutic approach was adopted to help interpret the shifting understanding of hadith among the younger generation and religious communities. The results show that although technological advances have enriched access to hadith, there are concerns about misinterpretation due to the lack of control of authoritative scholars. However, technology also provides opportunities for Islamic scholars and educational institutions to adapt, utilizing multimedia as a means of da'wah as well as the preservation of tradition. Therefore, synergistic efforts between technological innovation and strengthening Islamic literacy are needed so that the understanding of hadith in the post-multimedia era remains authentic and relevant.

Abstract

The assimilation of local culture with Islamic values continues to expand in various lines of Muslim life in the archipelago, especially in the Banjar community. One can be seen in the Banjar marriage tradition as a series of events. The tradition continues to be implemented and preserved by the local community. This research aims to trace further the process of cultural assimilation and its intersection with the prophet's hadith. Two questions form the basis of the study: first, what is the process of involvement of the hadith (sunnah) in shaping the customs that have taken root in the community; second, what is the process of contextualization of the hadith text into the local context of the Banjar community?. The results show that the marriage custom, which was a local culture, has sunnah values that can then become a medium for the perpetrators to gain rewards and blessings. In addition, the universal values of hadith can also be applied in the form of hadith's contextualization that is local culture.

Abstract

Modern society's awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle has brought new ideas not only limited to diet and sleep but also exercise. In this case, exercise is believed to be important in realizing physical and mental health. However, some groups limit the practice of exercise to archery, swimming, and horseback riding, as referred to the hadith delivered by the prophet. This study aims to analyze the concept of sports in the Prophetic traditions as a basis for developing a holistic sports education program, as well as to examine the permissibility of the Prophetic sports tradition through the contextualization of hadith in the modern era. Through a qualitative approach based on literature study, the author uses a collection of literature and relevant sources of information as research sources. In analyzing the data, the author uses the stages proposed by Miles & Huberman, namely data identification, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. From two questions; how is the contextualization of sports hadith in realizing physical and mental health, and how is the application of hadith about sports in the development of sports education programs, the results show that the concept of sports in the prophet's traditions is not seen from the form of sports alone, such as swimming, archery and horse riding, but rather on the aspect of its purpose and usefulness. Philosophically, the purpose and benefits of sports education in children through the context of archery and horse riding during the Prophet's time are more directed at the form of children's education so that they become individuals who understand the goals and objectives of life, calmness, concentration, and strategies in achieving these goals, including mastery of modern technological means that support the ease of physical activity in facilitating towards every goal of life.

Abstract

In the last few decades, serious land issues have emerged, such as land degradation, pollution, land scarcity, and ownership conflicts. Departing from this reality, it is important to examine in depth the concept of land utilization and maintenance, because there has been a shift in the function of land from a medium of production to an economic object. On this basis, two problem formulations are proposed as the starting point of the research. First, how is land discussed in the Prophetic traditions? Second, how is the Prophet's guidance related to the maintenance and utilization of land. Both questions will be approached using a qualitative-descriptive method with a library research approach, namely reading and comparing several references related to the study. The results showed that the study of the term al-ardh in the text of the prophetic traditions led to two findings. First, the philosophical aspect in the form of human attitudes towards land. Second, the technical aspects include the priority of land ownership, land utilization methods, and various functions of land which include theological, ecological, social, and economic functions.

Abstract

The practice of circumcision among the Muslim community began during the time of Abraham (peace be upon him) and continues for generations to this day. This reality makes circumcision no longer limited to practice but has been transformed into a living tradition in the community. This is also corroborated by the prophet's hadith which mentions circumcision as one of the five human natures, including part of the process of becoming an adult. However, many children and infants have been circumcised. This phenomenon eventually raises the question: what is the rule of circumcision in Islam, and when is the prescribed time for a Muslim to perform circumcision?. These questions will be analyzed through a descriptive-analytical approach based on library research to find the answers that are comprehensive, scientific, and in line with Islamic rules. In this case, Ibn Hajar's thoughts in Kitab Fath al-Bari become the main source of study, supported by several relevant studies. The results show that the original law of circumcision is mustahab and then becomes obligatory when a person reaches the age of puberty. As for the timing of circumcision, Islam does not specify the ideal circumcision. A person can be circumcised when he is a toddler, a child, and maximum when he is a teenager who enters the age of puberty. The timing is more inclined to the doctor's recommendation so that the circumcision process causes bigger problems in the future.

Abstract

Conflicts among farmers over water resource management are often a significant problem, especially during the dry season. This is made all the more complex by the fact that these problems occur on a protracted basis without any concrete action being taken to resolve them. One of these realities occurs in the community of Kedungrejo Village, Malang District. The emergence of catfish cultivation is an alternative business and an effort to form a space for community consensus in discussion. This study analyzes the role of catfish farming as a consensus space in two forms of questions. First, how is the relevance between the hadith about deliberation and catfish cultivation as a community consensus space? Second, how is the impact of catfish farming as a consensus space in breaking the tension in the community? Using a descriptive qualitative approach and Miles and Huberman's analysis, this study found that catfish farming is not only an alternative economic solution but also fosters social solidarity through deliberation. Meanwhile, the hadith about deliberation in farmers' socio-economic practices confirms that Islamic values can be applied in community life. As a result, catfish cultivation in Kedungrejo is proof that deliberation can be a tool for conflict resolution while improving community welfare.

Abstract

The parent's role in the legal action of building children's character is to encounter new situations along with modern times. Various new challenges are undeniable, such as social, cultural, and economic issues, and the increasingly massive development of digital technology. It should affect the parenting process, where parents are required to observe and control everything that their children do. This study was conducted to find out the hadith commentary on the concept of "parenting", by understanding how children learn and the role of parents in being responsible for their children's education. Hadiths are relevant to parenting learning through two problems. First, what are the characteristics of educators from the perspective of hadith? Second, what are the methods taught by the Prophet in educating children? To answer the two problems, the author used a literature study based on the grounded theory of Saldaña and Anselm Strauss and made the concept of contemporary learning parenting a sensitizing concept. The results show that there are at least 12 hadiths that are relevant to the idea of parenting and produce four characteristics of educators that should be applied in the parenting process, as well as three methods that parents can use in the parenting process. It is important to support the success of every parent in educating, directing, and making children a person with positive character.

Abstract

Problems arising within society are often rooted in the uncritical acceptance and application of dha’if (weak) traditions, particularly in matters of worship. Interestingly, Ibn Ḥajar al-’Asqalānī, a renowned hadith scholar, extensively quotes various hadiths, including dha’if ones, in his seminal work Bulūgh al-Marām, a book focused on Islamic legal rulings that ideally should be based on authentic, hadith ṣaḥiḥ or ḥasan. This study examines Ibn Ḥajar’s perspective on utilizing hadith dha’if, guided by two central research questions. First, what are Ibn Hajar’s view and considerations in incorporating dha’if hadiths into Bulūgh al-Marām? Second, what is the position and validity of dha’if traditions within the broader discourse of Islamic jurisprudence? The study employs a descriptive-analytical method grounded in a literature review to address these questions. The findings reveal that Ibn Ḥajar permits the use of hadiths dha’if under specific conditions; the weakness must not be severe, the narration should align with established principles or stronger evidence, and it must not be definitively attributed to the Prophet. In Bulūgh al-Marām, hadith dha’if are not presented as primary legal sources but rather as supportive material to strengthen or clarify authentic reports. Moreover, the presence of hadith dha’if in his work shows a concrete effort to provide examples of the position and permissibility of using da'if traditions. Thus, people can be wiser in responding to any information, both general and prophetic traditions in the midst of religious life.

Abstract

The concept of ikhtilāf al-ḥadīth, once understood as a substantive contradiction between hadiths, has shifted in meaning in the digital age. Today, contestation often arises not from textual conflict but from differing interpretations among religious groups. This study aims to explore the contestation surrounding hadiths on bid’ah (religious innovation) between the Salafi and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) paradigms on social media. It addresses two key questions; first, how do Salafi and NU groups interpret bid’ah hadiths on social media; and second, what forms of contestation emerge between these groups? Employing a qualitative-descriptive method and purposive sampling for data collection, the study finds that the Salafi group tends to adopt a textualist approach, leading to partial and concise interpretations of bid’ah hadiths on social media. In contrast, the NU group applies a contextualist approach, producing broader and more comprehensive meanings. A clear instance of contestation is observed when the Salafi-affiliated YouTube channel @MajelisilmuTV posted a video about bid’ah, which was critically countered by NU-affiliated interpretations via an Instagram post by @Ajir_Ubaidillah. This interaction illustrates how social media has become a new arena for contemporary religious debates, reflecting a transformation in the dynamics of authority and authenticity in hadith interpretation within the digital public sphere.
