Abstract

This study aims to discuss the characters of Indonesian students in the screenplay of the film entitled Yowis Ben 1 by Bayu Skak, Bagus Bramanti, and Gea Rexy. The method used in this study is a descriptive method with content analysis techniques. The approach is done by analyzing and describing the object of the research. Qualitative analysis focuses on indicating the meaning, description, clarification, and placement of data in their respective contexts and often writes them down in the form of words. The data was taken from the scenatio script of the film Yowis Ben 1 by Bayu Skak, Bagus Bramanti, and Gea Rexy which the researchers transcribed through the films they had watched. The data analysis technique used in this research is qualitative content analysis. The results of this study indicate that the depiction of the characters emphasizes the technique of speaking or dialogue in the scenario script which includes the character's reactions, psychology, thoughts and feelings, as well as physical conditions in the Yowis Ben film scenario script 1. Narrative depiction technique is used by the author in the film Yowis Ben 1 to describe the behavior and physical depiction of characters rather than using dramatic depiction techniques. Dramatic techniques are mostly used to describe the psychological, thoughts and feelings of characters. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that the reaction of the character in the form of action (guidance) and the way the character responded to a problem became things that could portray the character in a film screenplay.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the massive dominance of Bugis men over all kinds of problems in the life of the Bugis people, including the lives of women. This controlling influence has turned Bugis women into number two beings in the social process. And Bugis women have to accept the fact that patriarchal culture is growing prolifically, including in literary texts. The purpose of this research is to discuss the efforts of the Bugis women's resistance which is contained in a collection of short stories When ItTime 'sby Darmawati Majid. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The literature review uses an existentialist feminism approach from Simone de Beaviour. Data collection techniques used are literature study and reading and note-taking techniques. The presentation of the results is narrated in the form of descriptive analysis. The female characters carry out resistance, including resistance to marriage, resistance to tradition, and resistance social. The marginalization of female characters is caused by the stereotype of women, the subordination of women, and violence against women which diminish the existence of Bugis women.

Abstract

Marriage is one of the interesting topics to be discussed, especially among young people. Perception of marriage in modern times may differ from the views of marriage 10 or 20 years ago. This study analyzes conversations in interviews with male and female students of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, University of Indonesia. In the interview process, the researcher found a gap in both male and female respondents. Weddings in Indonesia are generally carried out according to certain customs and cultures, so it is interesting to examine how young people in their 20s view marriage. The pauses studied in this study are in the form of interjections such as hmm, aaaa or silence. Silence is considered a pause if the respondent does not provide an answer within 1 second. The pauses that arise in discussions related to marriage can be an indication of the respondent's knowledge of the trends and customs that are followed. Therefore, the research problem raised in this study is the role of pauses in the interview process. This study aims to analyze the presence of pauses and compare it between male and female respondents. The data in this study were obtained by using the listening and recording methods without the researcher getting directly involved. Participants know that their conversation is being recorded. This study involved 3 participants, 1 male participant and 1 female participant as respondents, and 1 female participant as the questioner. The recording of questions and answers with participants was then processed using the ELAN tool and observed pauses between propositions. One of the findings of this study is that pauses appear as an indication of the transition from one proposition to the next.

Abstract

After Indonesia's independence, various internal conflicts occurred which caused several major upheavals. These include Permesta, PRRI, 1965, and 1998 incidents. Not only upheavals, but also crimes, such as rape, looting, torture, and even genocide. This is what makes literary works present by recounting incidents of violence or disappearances that occurred during the upheaval, one of which is the novel Laut Bercerita by Leila S. Chudori which discusses the events of 1998. Genocide events can be one of the factors that cause trauma, so Hirsch explained that genocide can be a factor in the occurrence of memory transmission to the next generation. Thus, an analysis of how genocide is described to form trauma to the victim or the people around the victim is interesting to explore. The research method used in this study is descriptive narrative analysis obtained through novels or other supporting references that support the presence of a genocide narrative so that trauma can be analyzed by victims or the people around them. The result of this study is that there was a genocide in the Wiratna and Wirasena communities, they were considered to have carried out activities against the government resulting in detention, torture, and disappearances. This incident of disappearance or genocide caused the victim who managed to escape, his family, and even those around the victim to be traumatized by this event. Although, in the end, they were able to start accepting reality.

Abstract

A typical traditional society uses a unique way of communication. In the context of buying and selling situations, between buyers and sellers often use vague, ambiguous and mysterious utterances. The purpose of this study is to identify the various directive speech acts and the functions of speech acts in the trading process set in traditional markets. This type of research is a qualitative descriptive research with the aim of obtaining an objective description of the speech of traders and buyers in the trading process. The listening method, which is equipped with note-taking techniques and recording techniques, is used to collect research data. For the data analysis method, distribution and equivalent methods were used to answer each research variable. The types of directive speech acts found include directive requests, directive orders, directive questions, directives of advice, and directives of giving permission. The most dominant types of directive speech acts that appear are directive speech acts of asking questions and giving permission. The functions of speech acts that occur in the trading process at Aur Duri Market, Jambi City, include communicating factual information, disclosing intellectual information, expressing emotional attitudes, and influencing.

Abstract

This study delves into the utilization of diverse types of abbreviations in the context of WhatsApp group messages among sixth-grade students at SDN Karang Tengah 06. The research specifically focuses on identifying and categorizing abbreviations, acronyms, contractions, and fragments that are commonly employed. Employing qualitative research methods, including adept free-viewing and note-taking techniques, the investigation analyzes transcripts of group conversations involving class VI students in September 2022. The results of this analysis shed light on the prevalence of abbreviation usage within written communication among this cohort of 12 to 13-year-olds. Notably, the findings underscore the practicality of abbreviations in efficiently conveying information, especially considering the constraints of the medium. The data further reveals the intricate nature of these abbreviations, with many words exhibiting multiple forms of abbreviation. Through this research, a comprehensive understanding of the role and impact of abbreviation in contemporary written communication, particularly within the dynamics of adolescent peer groups, emerges, contributing to broader insights in the field.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to discuss the implantation of religious values using cultural practices as a form of human relationship with God, as a form of human relationship with fellow human beings, and as a form of human relationship with oneself in the novel Hati Suhita. This study uses a literary sociology approach with a descriptive qualitative research type. The data source used is the novel Hati Suhita (2019) by Khilma Anis. Data collection techniques using reading and note techniques. The data analysis technique used is descriptive analysis technique which consists of classifying, analyzing and drawing data conclusions. The method used to test the validity of the data is the triangulation technique. The study suggests that the novel employs cultural practices to nurture religious principles, incorporating aspects such as faith, prayer, and human-God connections, as well as fostering religious attributes through human-human interactions like fairness, preaching, and companionship, while also promoting individual religious values through qualities like patience, obedience, and integrity.

Abstract

An individual's psychological responses to pressure and conflict may impact their thoughts and actions. The research aims to see how self-defense mechanisms may develop a 'Persona' to cover anxiety over pressure and fulfill the the objective of the 'Self,' as depicted in Taufiq al-Hakim's short story “Kenalilah Pembunuh Itu” in a collection of short stories entitled Arinî Allah which was first published in 1999. This study uses qualitative methods from the perspective of personality psychoanalysis of Persona and Self from Carl Jung and defense mechanisms from Sigmund Freud. The data identified were in the form of the forms of defense carried out by the defendant male character, the Persona that he showed to the public, and the achievement of Self in the form of the ultimate goal which became his redemption. The study's findings reveal how the male character accused in short stories uses his defense mechanism to protect himself from anxiety and feelings of guilt. From this process, the accused man manifested the personality of Persona and Self as self-exemption for feelings of guilt and disappointment over the justice that was questioned in his social environment

Abstract

Kompas is one of the mass media that is still popular with news readers in Indonesia. In addition, there are still many writers who submit their writings to be published in the Kompas Opinion column. The grammatical hierarchy which includes syntax, morphology and phonology in Kompas.com articles needs to be examined to find out grammatical errors in a discourse (article). This study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive method aiming to identify how wrong the application of grammatical hierarchy was in the Kompas.com article published in May 2022. Errors in using grammatical hierarchy were recorded at the phonological level in the form of adding phonemes 14%; morphological level in the form of compounding 6%; syntax level in the form of using punctuation marks 8%, writing absorption elements 14%, using hyphens 6%, using words 46% and ineffective sentences 6%. The ineffectiveness of the dominant grammatical hierarchy is at the syntactic level.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the psychological conflicts experienced by the main character in the novel Mata and Nyala Api Purba. The theory used in this study is personality psychology from Erich Fromm. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive method with a literary psychology approach. The source of the data in this study is the novel Mata and Nyala Api Purba by Okky Madasari. The research data is presented in the form of text excerpts that represent personality for the activities, dialogues, and actions performed by the main character in personality psychology, Erich Fromm. Data collection uses reading and note techniques combined with objective analysis techniques. The results of this study indicate that there are (1) existential dilemmas including humans as animals and humans as humans, life and death, imperfection and perfection, solitude and togetherness; (2) the need for freedom and attachment includes the need for connectedness, rootedness, being a creator, unity, identity; (3) the need to understand and act includes the need for an orientation framework, a loyalty framework, arousal-stimulation, effectiveness; and (4) the mechanism of escape includes authoritarianism, destruction, and adjustment that occurs in the character Matara as the main character in the novel Mata and Nyala Api Purba.
