Abstract

The low level of students' response writing skills indicates a gap between the demands of the Merdeka Curriculum and the practice of Indonesian language learning in junior high schools. This study aims to test the effectiveness of the Genre-Based model assisted by selected short stories from Kompas 2021 in improving the response writing skills of seventh-grade students at public junior high schools in Jakarta. The method used was an experiment with a pretest-posttest control group design involving two classes, namely the experimental class and the control class, each consisting of 30 students. Data were obtained through a response text writing test assessed based on seven assessment indicators, then analyzed using normality tests, homogeneity tests, independent t-tests, and N-Gain. The results showed an increase in the average score of the experimental class from 58.70 to 84.57, while the control class increased from 57.43 to 68.87, with N-Gain scores of 63.28% (sufficiently effective category) and 25.39% (ineffective category), respectively. The t-test showed a significant difference between the two classes (Sig. < 0.05), so it can be concluded that the application of the Genre-Based model assisted by selected short stories from Kompas 2021 is effective in improving the response text writing skills of seventh-grade students at public junior high schools in Jakarta.

Abstract

The Alchemist by Coelho is a philosophical novel about the journey of a young shepherd named Santiago, who finds a treasure that is hidden near the Egyptian pyramids. The story is rich in metaphor, which makes it an ideal topic for translation studies that focus on cultural nuances and emotional depth. This study aims to examine how Larson’s translation strategies are able to translate significant metaphors while retaining the philosophical and emotional complexity. The data in this study are seven key metaphors that convey the concept of personal destiny, spiritual interconnectedness, personal desire, nature signs, gendered image, and peacefulness. This study uses a qualitative method. By applying the analysis of metaphor translation by Larson, the results indicate that effective translation techniques used by the translator, Lesmana (2005), such as generalisation, omission, amplification, adaptation, and literal translation, not only retain the original meaning of the metaphor but also modify them to align with Indonesian culture. This work provides an understanding of the challenges of translating metaphors, which contributes to broadening the discussion regarding how to convey information effectively across cultures in literary contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of kandōshi kandō as a marker of the expressive speech act of anger in the Japanese drama The Queen of Villains by examining its forms, delineating its pragmatic functions, and investigating the patterns of inter-utterance relations that construct the emergence of anger expressions within the characters’ dialogues. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method using referential and pragmatic analytical approaches. The data were extracted from dialogue containing angry expressions and subsequently classified according to the forms of kandōshi kandō, their contexts of occurrence, and their pragmatic functions. The findings reveal six major forms haa, nanda, aa, ee, ou, and fuu each signaling a distinct nuance of anger, ranging from cynical rejection and angry surprise to belittlement, emotionally charged criticism, harsh prohibition, and contempt. The analysis further shows that all kandōshi kandō appear within dependent utterance chains (coupling), functioning as direct responses to triggering lines. In addition, their use is pragmatically egalitarian, the drama does not depict power dynamics through linguistic hierarchy, as both senior and junior characters express anger directly without mitigation, producing a pattern of conflictual equality rather than social dominance. These findings contribute to Japanese pragmatic studies by offering a detailed mapping of kandōshi kandō functions specifically within angry expressive acts an area that remains underexplored in prior research, which has tended to focus on anime, radio dramas, or classical performances.

Abstract

This study investigates the underexplored representation and contestation of religiously grounded patriarchal systems in contemporary feminist literary studies, focusing on memoirs. It analyzes mechanisms of women’s oppression and forms of female resistance in Tara Westover’s Educated through qualitative narrative analysis of key episodes, including domestic violence, educational mobility, and religious indoctrination. Employing Sylvia Walby’s framework of patriarchal structures alongside Mary Daly’s critique of androcentric theology, the study identifies two central modes of patriarchal control. First, domestic patriarchy is embodied by Tara’s father, Gene, whose religious authority governs family behavior and restricts access to education and external institutions, illustrating how religious doctrine enforces hierarchical gender relations within the household. Second, Tara’s resistance emerges through her pursuit of academic achievement and financial autonomy, marking a gradual disengagement from domestic control and a redefinition of her subjectivity. Her intervention in her sister-in-law’s experience of domestic violence further exemplifies a shift from compliance to active moral agency. The analysis expands Walby’s model by revealing how religious ideology sustains domestic patriarchy even as women engage with broader social institutions. This article contributes to feminist literary criticism by illuminating the complex interplay of religious indoctrination and familial patriarchy in Educated, and by framing education as a situated form of resistance within patriarchal religious contexts.

Abstract

This study analyzes Zainuddin's inferiority complex and psychological transformation in Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck  through a synthesis of Freud's psychoanalysis and Adler's individual psychology. The objectives of this study include: (1) identifying the sources of Zainuddin's suffering and low self-esteem, which are intertwined with social rejection of his mixed identity, (2) mapping the id-ego-superego conflicts that accompany romantic relationships and normative demands, and (3) explaining sublimation as a mechanism that transforms inner wounds into creative energy. The research uses a descriptive qualitative method with close reading of narratives and dialogues that show symptoms of inferiority, intrapsychic conflict, and defense strategies. The results show that social stigma triggers feelings of worthlessness that reinforce intrapsychic conflict; this conflict is then transferred through sublimation into artistic production and social achievement, thereby transforming Zainuddin from a passive figure into a productive and influential one. These findings confirm that the tragedy of the shipwreck serves as both the peak of suffering and a trigger for new meanings that consolidate the character's transformation, thereby enriching the reading of literary psychology by making sublimation an operational link between the Freud–Adler frameworks.

Abstract

This study examines Siti Aminah's creative process and writing strategies in producing competitive Javanese novels. The focus of the study includes the stages of the creative process and the strategies used to win novel writing competitions. This study uses an expressive approach, which focuses on the relationship between literary works and the inner world of the author, with descriptive qualitative methods. Research data was obtained through interviews with Siti Aminah and documentation of the novels Sengara Mati and Truntum. The results of the study reveal that the creative process undergone by Siti Aminah follows the four stages of Wallas, namely: the preparation stage, which involves collecting writing materials; the incubation stage, which involves deep reflection on previously written works; the illumination stage, which involves pouring ideas through mind mapping to organize the plot; and the verification stage, which involves self-evaluation for competition requirements and the involvement of professional editors for general publication. The findings also reveal that there are five strategies applied by Siti Aminah to produce high-quality works in the context of competitions, including: (1) selecting themes related to feminism and Yogyakarta culture, (2) using Javanese language that is easy to understand, (3) crafting an engaging narrative, (4) participating in literary competitions, and (5) effective post-competition publication and distribution strategies. This study concludes that the creative process in competitive novel writing depends not only on individual creativity, but also on the author's strategic ability to adapt to the demands of the competition.

Abstract

Low literacy levels in schools have a significant impact on students' difficulties in expressing ideas through speech writing . This study aims to measure the effectiveness of the YouTube-assisted “Copy the Master” method on speech writing skills. Using a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest pattern, the research involved 60 eighth-grade students divided into experimental and control classes . Data were collected through tests and observations, then analyzed using the N-Gain test and Independent Sample T-test . The results showed that the experimental class achieved an N-Gain value of 57.16 (moderately effective), significantly outperforming the control class, which scored 24.47 (ineffective). Statistical tests confirmed a significant difference with a p-value < 0.01. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of expert modeling with audiovisual media, which helps students fully understand structure and linguistic style . It is concluded that this method serves as an effective alternative for improving writing competence in the digital era.

Abstract

This research examines the discourse of global solidarity in the news surrounding the hashtag #كل_العيون_على_رفح (#AllEyesOnRafah) on Aljazeera Arabic and CNN Arabic news media based on Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis. This research uses descriptive qualitative with data in the form of news texts from the official websites of the two media and related literature. The analysis is conducted through three dimensions: textual, discourse, and social practices. The results show that Aljazeera Arabic consistently builds a narrative of global solidarity with Palestine through emotional diction, intensive coverage, and active interactive on social media. This global solidarity is reinforced by the support of international actors and boycott campaigns as digital resistance to Israel. In contrast, CNN Arabic tends to present this phenomenon neutrally, focusing on the balance of information and the effects of the boycott critically. These findings show that global solidarity is not only represented in texts, but also has an impact on the public, social mobilisation, and pressure on global actors.
