Abstract

This study aims to analyze the values of sincerity (ikhlas) in the Qur'an and their contribution to the development of work ethics by comparing them with the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) from Western psychology. The research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical method, involving the interpretation of Qur'anic verses about sincerity and an analysis of SDT, which emphasizes autonomy, competence, and relatedness as key aspects of motivation. The findings reveal that the Qur'an provides a spiritual foundation through the values of sincerity, where pure intention to seek Allah's pleasure serves as the primary basis for all actions. This concept focuses on selfless contribution, surpassing material orientation. In contrast, SDT highlights intrinsic motivation derived from individuals' psychological needs, such as autonomy and competence. While both share similarities in terms of internal motivation, the values of sincerity in the Qur'an offer a deeper spiritual dimension, making it a holistic approach to fostering meaningful work ethics. This study concludes that implementing the values of sincerity can significantly enhance work motivation with a higher orientation toward spiritual goals, surpassing secular approaches. These findings contribute significantly to the development of more holistic work ethics in the context of Islam.

Abstract

The verse about wudu in QS. al-Maidah: 6, which reads "wamsahu bi ru’usikum," has a dzanni ad-dalalah meaning, which leads to differences in interpretation among scholars. This study aims to analyze the differences in the interpretation of the verse on the limits of wiping the head during wudu between the tafsir Rawai’ul Bayan and al-Qurtubi. Using a semantic and intertextual approach based on Julia Kristeva’s theory, this research explores the significance and signifiance of the verse as well as the intertextual relationships between the two tafsirs. By employing a qualitative method, this study analyzes the texts of both tafsirs and finds that Rawai’ul Bayan tends to interpret "wiping the head" minimally, suggesting wiping only part of the head. On the other hand, al-Qurtubi offers a broader interpretation, allowing the wiping of the entire head or at least a quarter of it. The intertextual analysis reveals relationships of modification and conversion between the two tafsirs, indicating a reciprocal influence in the interpretation process. This study concludes that the differences in interpretation are influenced by factors such as social, cultural, and methodological contexts in the tafsir approaches used by each mufassir. The contribution of this research is to enrich the understanding of the dynamics of interpreting the wudu verse from both classical tafsir perspectives and intertextuality, offering new insights for contemporary tafsir studies.

Abstract

Tafsir Rabbana Min Kalami Rabbina has two interesting approaches to study, namely psychological and historical approaches and contains more than 100 references. This research aims to reveal the factors behind the birth of Tafsir Rabbana Min Kalami Rabbina and analyze the discourse contained in it. This research uses descriptive-qualitative approach with discourse analysis method. The research data was obtained from the text of the tafsir book. The results of the analysis show that the book of Tafsir Rabbana Min Kalami Rabbina was born from Moh Abdul Kholiq Hasan's initiative to compile thematic interpretations of prayer verses. Discourse analysis reveals that Moh Abdul Kholiq Hasan was influenced by Nashruddin al-Baidawi's tafsir method in terms of approach, style, and writing systematics. In addition, the author's scientific background and social context also contribute significantly to the formation of this tafsir discourse. Overall, this study concludes that the book of Tafsir Rabbana Min Kalami Rabbina by Moh Abdul Kholiq Hasan is a unique work of tafsir, which combines scientific and cultural aspects in an effort to understand the meaning of the verses of the Qur'an.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the impact of the tahsin method in improving the mastery of makharijul huruf (pronunciation of Arabic letters) and Quran reading skills among students at Vuttisatvitayanuson School, Krabi Province, Thailand. The background of this research focuses on the difficulties students face in pronouncing makharijul huruf, which affects the quality of their Quran recitation. The objectives of this study are to identify the students' Quran reading abilities, analyze the implementation of the tahsin method in the learning process, and evaluate its impact on improving the pronunciation of makharijul huruf and the correct application of tajwid rules. This research employs a qualitative approach with a narrative design, where data is collected through interviews and direct observations. Data analysis techniques include data presentation, data reduction, and drawing conclusions. The findings indicate that the implementation of the tahsin method has a positive effect on the pronunciation of makharijul huruf and the correct application of tajwid rules. Furthermore, tahsin learning also plays a role in the development of students' character, such as discipline, responsibility, patience, and attention to detail. Teachers play a key role in providing correct recitation examples and guiding students in improving their reading. The findings suggest that the tahsin method not only enhances the quality of Quran recitation but also contributes positively to the formation of students' moral character, which is highly relevant in the educational context of non-Arab countries like Thailand.

Abstract

During the transition period between the Old Order and the New Order, H.B. Jassin, known as Indonesia's "Pope of Literature," introduced a Quran translation using a poetic approach. His works, Al-Qur’anul Karim Bacaan Mulia and Al-Qur’an Berwajah Puisi, aimed to present the Quran with a distinctive aesthetic, namely poetry, intended to enrich the religious experience of its readers. This study aims to analyze the motivations, translation process, and the controversies surrounding this translation. By using a literature review and descriptive analysis approach, this study reveals that Jassin's translation process was full of personal struggles and public reception challenges. Moreover, this study highlights the uniqueness of Jassin's translation, which distinguishes it from the official translations of the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Despite facing significant criticism, this work made a substantial contribution by introducing a literary approach to translating religious texts, particularly the Quran, in Indonesia. This study also underscores the relevance of a literary approach in translating the Quran in a country rich in literary traditions and aesthetic values.

Abstract

This study discusses the theological conflict arising from interpretational differences between Nusantara Ulama and Transnational Ulama in Indonesia. The researcher analyzes the paradigms and mainstream interpretations of the two Islamic typologies that have developed in Indonesia, namely Nusantara Ulama and Transnational Ulama. The author also seeks to identify points of difference and initiate an integrative effort to minimize existing tensions. Using a qualitative approach with library research as the primary reference and employing a comparative tafsir method as an analytical tool, this study also adopts the approach of ilm al-kalam (theology). The research findings indicate that the Nusantara Ulama paradigm tends to use a contextual paradigm with a mainstream interpretation of substantialist tafsir, while the Transnational Ulama uses a textual paradigm with a mainstream interpretation of scripturalist tafsir. These differences in paradigm and mainstream interpretation often lead to misunderstandings, even accusations of heresy or disbelief towards each other, despite the essential similarities in their views. To minimize ideological conflict regarding the interpretation of theological verses, the author proposes an integrative approach through convergent interpretation (tafsīr mutaqāribah). This approach represents a compromise between substantialist and scripturalist tafsir. This tafsir model offers a peaceful way to reach a mutual agreement that both sides can accept. The interpretation focuses on the core teachings of the Qur'an concerning theological verses, with consideration for maslahat (public interest), by finding common ground amidst the various interpretations. This approach requires mufassirs to socialize the meaning of theological verses to the Muslim community. Mufassirs need to re-recognize the primary purpose of the Qur'an's revelation to Prophet Muhammad, which is to bring a mission of peace, while also reconciling diverse opinions with a firm adherence to the essential theological teachings of Islam and upholding the Qur'an and Sunnah.

Abstract

Indonesia, with its religious, ethnic, and cultural diversity, requires a value foundation that can strengthen harmonious interfaith interactions. One relevant concept in this context is Ukhuwwah Islamiyah, or Islamic brotherhood, which teaches the importance of solidarity, tolerance, and mutual respect. This study aims to analyze the concept of Ukhuwwah Islamiyah in the Qur'an and its implications for interfaith interactions in Indonesia. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative approach, analyzing Qur'anic verses related to the values of brotherhood and tolerance, along with tafsir from various scholars. The findings show that the Qur'an emphasizes the importance of solidarity among human beings, not only within the Muslim community but also in relation to other religious communities. Verses such as QS. Al-Hujurat: 10 and QS. Al-Kafirun: 6 stress the principles of unity and respect for religious differences. However, challenges such as radicalization and social conflict remain obstacles to realizing true Ukhuwwah. This study contributes to understanding the relevance of the values of Ukhuwwah Islamiyah in enhancing tolerance and solidarity among religious communities in Indonesia and offers solutions to address these challenges through education and interfaith dialogue.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the psychological values contained in the Quranic verses related to the concept of gratitude, which, in Islamic teachings, is considered an important aspect in addressing various psychological issues. The study uses a library research method with a qualitative-descriptive approach, involving maudu’i analysis and content analysis to uncover the meanings of verses related to gratitude. The primary focus of this study is the interpretation of these verses in the Tafsir Al-Misbah, along with the integration of psychological literature to delve into the concept of gratitude in the context of modern psychology. The findings show that gratitude encompasses various psychological values, including positive emotions, mental health, psychological well-being, optimism, empathy, altruism, and prosocial behavior. These findings support McCullough’s theory, which highlights the positive impact of gratitude on mindset, mood, and behavior. The study concludes that the psychological values contained in gratitude play a significant role in the formation of individual psychological well-being and offer practical guidance on the application of gratitude in daily life. This research also contributes to connecting the Quranic religious perspective with modern psychology, expanding the understanding of the relevance of religion in supporting mental health.

Abstract

The practice of reciting Surah Al-Lahab as a rain deterrent at the Taman Pendidikan Al-Qur'an (TPQ) Baitul Mahfudh, Madumulyorejo, Dukun, Gresik, is a religious tradition that blends Quranic teachings with local wisdom to address environmental challenges, particularly extreme weather. This study aims to uncover the religious meanings and beliefs of the community regarding this tradition, as well as to understand how these values influence their religious practices. A qualitative approach was employed, utilizing interviews and participatory observation to explore the community's understanding of the Surah Al-Lahab recitation ritual. The results show that this tradition is perceived as a form of prayer to avoid rain, which could disrupt the community's activities. The ritual also reflects the connection between religious and social dimensions within the local community. In conclusion, the recitation of Surah Al-Lahab serves not only as a religious practice but also as a means to strengthen social solidarity and address environmental challenges within the community.

Abstract

The concept of teaching materials in the Qur'an plays a significant role in Islamic education, both in providing spiritual guidance and educating humans to think critically and act according to the principles of justice, truth, and virtue. This study aims to explore the concept of teaching materials in the Qur'an, focusing on the values contained in the tafsir works of al-Mishbah and Ibnu Katsir and their application in educational contexts. The research employs a qualitative approach using the tafsir muqaran (comparative) method, which compares the interpretations of Qur'anic verses by scholars to gain a comprehensive understanding. The findings reveal that the Qur'an encompasses three primary educational values: (1) I’tiqodiyah Values (faith education), which include strengthening faith in Allah along with His names and attributes; (2) Khuluqiyah Values (moral education), exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad in educating his companions; and (3) Amaliyah Values (behavioral education), emphasizing the importance of practicing the knowledge acquired. These findings demonstrate that the Qur'an is not only a rich source of teaching materials but also relevant in fostering integration between religious and modern knowledge. This study contributes to the development of Qur'an-based teaching materials that are practical and capable of shaping morally upright and intellectually advanced generations.
