Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the need for developing a Project-Task Based Learning (PROTABING) poetry learning model in senior high schools to address the challenges of Indonesian language learning. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with a focus on needs analysis, this study involved 71 tenth-grade students and two Indonesian language teachers in Bukittinggi selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis of learning tools using a checklist. The study findings revealed specific student barriers, including difficulty interpreting metaphorical meanings (88%), confusion in the use of figurative language (90.5%), and low self-confidence in oral appreciation (89%). Meanwhile, the analysis of the tools showed that although the teaching module had met administrative standards, the available evaluation instruments were not yet able to authentically measure higher-order thinking skills (HOTS). On the other hand, the majority of students' learning motivation was in the moderate category (67%), indicating the need for a more challenging learning model. These results confirm the urgent need for a PROTABING model that can systematically bridge tasks with projects. The implications of this research emphasize that reforms to Indonesian language learning models must integrate differentiation aspects to accommodate diverse student characteristics. Further research is needed to determine the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of the PROTABING model, both on a limited and broader scale.

Abstract

Research on teacher politeness strategies generally focuses on linguistic forms in classroom interactions, while studies linking these strategies to cultivating students' communication ethics in primary school Indonesian language learning remain limited. This study aims to describe the teacher's language politeness strategies and uncover the cultivation of students' communication ethics through these strategies. A qualitative case study approach was applied at SDN 01 Gawanan Colomadu, involving a third-grade teacher and students. Data were collected through observations of classroom interactions, semi-structured interviews with the teacher, and documentation of teaching modules and video recordings. Data analysis involved reduction, coding of positive and negative politeness utterances, thematic presentation, and drawing conclusions via triangulation. The results showed that the teacher’s politeness strategies included collective greetings, inclusive pronouns, specific praise, empathetic politeness markers, indirect instructions, softening particles, and personal reprimands without negative labeling. The cultivation of students' communication ethics was reflected in respectful attitudes, the confidence to voice opinions politely, the use of courteous expressions, the ability to accept corrections, and emotional control. These findings confirm that teacher language politeness strategies are an effective pedagogical practice for sustainably shaping students' communication ethics.

Abstract

The development of social media as a public communication platform has generated diverse forms of linguistic interaction, including those occurring in the comment sections of official accounts belonging to public figures. However, the freedom of expression afforded by digital spaces is not always accompanied by the use of polite language. This study aims to analyze the linguistic politeness strategies employed by netizens in the Instagram comment section of President Prabowo's post commemorating International Workers' Day (Labour Day). A qualitative approach using content analysis was adopted in this study. The data consisted of netizens' comments, which were collected through documentation techniques and analyzed using Brown and Levinson's politeness strategy framework, encompassing bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record strategies. The findings reveal that, of the 986 comments analyzed, bald on record was the most dominant strategy, followed by off-record, negative politeness, and positive politeness. These findings indicate that netizens tend to employ direct strategies when expressing criticism on issues perceived as highly urgent, although other politeness strategies are also evident, reflecting efforts to maintain social relationships. Theoretically, this study reinforces the applicability of Brown and Levinson's politeness theory to digital political communication by demonstrating that the choice of politeness strategies is influenced by the social context and the nature of the issues being discussed. Practically, the findings provide valuable insights for promoting digital literacy and ethical public communication by encouraging the effective expression of criticism while maintaining linguistic politeness in online interactions. Overall, communication on social media reflects the complex dynamics of linguistic politeness, shaped by emotional, social, and digital contextual factors.

Abstract

Asking for permission to go to the bathroom is a common linguistic practice in daily interactions, yet it carries complex pragmatic implications as it involves both individual needs and the orderliness of social interaction. This study aims to describe the formulation of bathroom permission speech acts in Indonesian and the pragmatic impact of these formulations on interaction. The study focuses on lexical variations, speech forms and structures, politeness strategies, and the acceptability of utterances across various interactional contexts. A qualitative approach with field research methods was employed. Oral data of bathroom permission utterances were collected through Discourse Completion Tasks (DCT), in-depth interviews, and covert field experiment. The data were analyzed using descriptive pragmatics, considering the speech situation, formulation structure, and the hearer's response. The results indicate that bathroom permission formulations are dominated by euphemistic locational references with the three most dominant lexicons being ke belakang (going to the back), ke kamar mandi (going to the bathroom), and toilet, and realized through indirect speech. The speech structure is graded according to the level of formality, ranging from complete structures in formal contexts to minimal structures in everyday settings. Furthermore, verbal and non-verbal politeness strategies play a crucial role in maintaining utterance acceptability and interactional flow, positioning bathroom permission as a socially negotiated cooperative interruption. Theoretically, this study contributes to the development of formulaic language studies in Indonesia by mapping social routine speech patterns that bridge individual biological needs with cultural politeness norms.

Abstract

The X account of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) of the Republic of Indonesia is intended to function as a medium of public information and transparency; however, its comment section frequently becomes a space for the dissemination of hate speech. This study aims to identify and describe the forms of hate speech in the comment section of the minister’s X account using Searle’s theory of illocutionary speech acts. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method. The data consisted of 42 hate-speech comments (N = 42) collected from comments posted on the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources’ X account in response to a post published on September 17, 2025. Data were collected using non-participant observation (SBLC), documentation, and purposive sampling, and were analyzed using linguistic and contextual analysis. The findings reveal four types of illocutionary speech acts: expressive (27 data; 60%), directive (9 data; 20%), assertive (8 data; 18%), and commissive (1 data; 2%), while no declarative speech acts were identified. The dominance of expressive speech acts indicates that hate speech is primarily used by netizens to express anger, disappointment, hostility, and contempt toward public officials rather than to provide rational criticism. From a forensic linguistic perspective, these linguistic patterns demonstrate a tendency toward emotionally driven cyber behavior that may constitute defamation, insults, intimidation, or threats, thereby potentially violating Law Number 1 of 2024 concerning the Second Amendment to Law Number 11 of 2008 on Electronic Information and Transactions. The study highlights how hate speech on social media functions not only as a form of digital expression but also as a linguistic practice with significant legal implications in public communication.

Abstract

21st-century learning demands that universities produce human resources capable of critical, creative, and adaptive thinking in response to developments in science and technology. One important skill that needs to be developed in Indonesian language learning is critical thinking skills through academic writing activities. This study aims to analyze the need to develop a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)-based writing assessment model to improve students' critical thinking skills. The type of research used is survey research with a descriptive qualitative and quantitative approach. The research instruments include interview guidelines, needs analysis questionnaires, learning observation sheets, and documentation. The study involved six Indonesian language lecturers and 68 students consisting of 40 female students and 28 male students. The results show that the writing assessment process applied is still conventional and focuses more on linguistic aspects than students' critical thinking skills. This condition is reflected in the average achievement of students' overall critical thinking skills which only reached (65.1%), which indicates that the critical thinking aspect has not become the main focus in the writing assessment process. The needs analysis results indicate that lecturers and students require a writing assessment model that not only evaluates linguistic aspects but also integrates STEM components and critical thinking skill indicators as a basis for more authentic, objective, and comprehensive assessments. The desired assessment model includes a critical thinking indicator-based assessment rubric, the use of real-world problem contexts, the use of technology in the assessment process, and a feedback mechanism that supports the development of students' academic writing and critical thinking skills.
