Abstract

This study aims to analyse the learning needs that must be met in the application of the field trip method and to explore the characteristics of students' reading interests and their influence on their skills in writing observation report texts (LHO). The research method used is qualitative with a descriptive approach, involving Indonesian language teachers and 30 seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Aek Nabara Barumun, Padang Lawas Regency, as respondents. Data was collected through interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. The results of the study indicate that the field trip method is effective in improving students' writing skills, but it requires thorough preparation, clear instructions, and guidance during and after the observation activity. Additionally, students' reading interests were found to have a positive correlation with the quality of their writing, where students with higher reading interests tend to have a richer vocabulary and more structured idea organisation skills. This study recommends that LHO writing instruction integrate field trip methods with efforts to enhance students' reading interest, thereby supporting the optimal development of writing skills.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse political reporting on Kompas.com during the period 1–8 November 2024 using Van Dijk's discourse analysis model, which includes the dimensions of macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with critical discourse analysis techniques. Data were obtained from seven political news articles published by Kompas.com during the period, which were analysed to identify main themes, news presentation structures, and language and modality usage. The analysis results indicate that the news articles emphasised narratives of reconciliation and stability, with a dominant narrative supporting the legitimacy of the new government. The choice of language used, such as the terms ‘without resentment’ and ‘strategic cooperation,’ served to reinforce the government's positive image and avoid open conflict. The superstructure of the news was structured in such a way as to reinforce the main message of the dominant political actors, while the microstructure used techniques such as nominalisation and passive sentences to maintain neutrality and avoid presenting sharp criticism. This discussion confirms that the media plays an important role in shaping political discourse through text structure and language choices, which often reinforce the government's narrative without providing space for more critical debate. This research enriches our understanding of the role of the media in shaping public opinion and contributes to critical media literacy.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the lack of Indonesian language teaching modules specifically designed for students with dyslexia in inclusive schools. The study aims to design an effective teaching module that aligns with the learning characteristics of dyslexic students. It employs the ADDIE development model, which consists of five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. However, this research was limited to the first three stages analysis, design, and development. The analysis stage involved identifying the needs and challenges faced by dyslexic students through interviews and observations. The design stage focused on creating the module based on analysis results and a review of effective learning methods. In the development stage, learning content was created using a multisensory approach and educational technology integration. The resulting module was developed by adapting the materials, methods, and media to be simpler, more interactive, and supportive of multisensory learning styles. Expert validation produced an Aiken’s V score of 0.85, indicating high validity and confirming that the module is suitable for use. This teaching module is considered effective in supporting inclusive education and serves as an innovative alternative to improve literacy skills among dyslexic students.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of expressive illocutionary speech acts in the YouTube program Catatan Demokrasi TV One, episode "Pagar Laut." The research identifies the use of expressive illocutionary acts in a public discussion forum broadcast through digital media, employing a qualitative descriptive approach. The data source consists of utterances containing expressive illocutionary acts in the episode. Data were collected using the observation method, including techniques such as recording (sadap), non-participatory observation (Simak Bebas Libat Cakap/SBLC), and note-taking to obtain relevant transcripts. Data analysis was conducted using the pragmatic equivalence method, with the Determining Element Sorting technique (PUP) and the Equalizing Comparative Connection technique (HBS) to classify data based on indicators of expressive speech acts and align the findings with Searle's (1979) theory of illocutionary acts. The findings revealed that the three most dominant types of expressive illocutionary acts were expressing gratitude (30%), greeting (25%), and apologizing (15%). Meanwhile, the least common type found was expressing condolences (0%). These findings demonstrate that expressive illocutionary acts not only serve to express the speaker's psychological state but also play a role in maintaining politeness and fostering harmonious interaction in digital political discussions, thereby enhancing communication dynamics among participants in the forum.

Abstract

Writing skills are an essential aspect of Indonesian language learning for developing critical, reflective, and creative thinking skills. Given the low level of writing skills among Year 12 vocational school students in writing mini-autobiographies, this quantitative research (quasi-experiment) tested the effectiveness of the Experiential Learning model. The results of the study show that the implementation of learning activities reached an optimal level (educators 100%, students 99.1%). There was a significant increase in students' writing skills, from the ‘fair’ category to “good”, with student responses in the ‘very good’ category. These findings confirm that Experiential Learning is effective in improving students' reflective writing skills and active engagement, making it suitable for implementation as a contextual learning strategy.

Abstract

Learning models are crucial instruments in education as they directly impact student learning outcomes. Among various pedagogical innovations, Problem Based Learning (PBL) has emerged as a highly effective model for writing instruction. This study aims to comprehensively describe the application of the Problem Based Learning model in improving students' writing skills through a systematic literature review. The research method employed is Literature Review (LR). The data criteria include scientific articles from Sinta 1 to Sinta 6 accredited national journals published within the last ten years (2015–2025). In the initial search phase using specific keywords, 60,800 articles were identified. The selection process was then tightened through title validation and elimination based on topical relevance, leaving 15 articles. After a quality review conducted by reading the full texts to ensure alignment with the research focus, 10 final articles were selected as the primary data sources. The review results indicate that the Problem Based Learning model significantly enhances students' writing skills across various educational levels. The implementation of PBL successfully transforms previously passive students into active and collaborative participants in the creative process. Significant improvements were observed in writing various text types, including argumentative, explanatory, observation reports, descriptive, news, and negotiation texts. Consequently, this model is highly recommended for language instruction.

Abstract

This study is based on the theory of language acquisition, which suggests that language is the result of the interaction between cognitive development and the social environment, referring to the cognitive theories of Piaget and Vygotsky and combined with syntactic theory. This study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. The research findings show that both subjects are able to produce logically structured and coherent speech, but the level of sentence complexity used varies at each age. Seven-year-old children used more simple and compound sentences, while nine-year-old children showed a tendency to produce compound and compound-complex utterances with a more varied number of clauses, and seven-year-old children produced more simple sentences than nine-year-old children, who did not produce simple sentences at all. These differences illustrate that age, cognitive maturity, and the intensity of social interaction significantly influence children's language abilities, particularly regarding vocabulary variety and syntactic complexity. These findings align with Piaget's and Vygotsky's theories, which emphasize that language develops through a combination of cognitive processes and the social environment.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of the relationship between humans and nature in the drama script “Di Bawah Bayang-Bayang Pohon Bakau” by Wahyudin, utilizing ecocritical theory as an analytical lens and hermeneutics as an interpretative instrument. The focus of this study lies on three main dimensions: (1) human efforts in preserving nature, (2) human dependence on nature, and (3) the inner emotional bond between humans and nature. The results show that the main character's actions represent environmental conservation through the routine of planting mangroves to protect coastal areas from abrasion. Data findings reveal that human dependence on nature is fundamental, as demonstrated through character dialogues regarding the use of rainwater for household consumption and dry twigs as a source of livelihood. Furthermore, there is a deep emotional bond evidenced by the character's concern for marine degradation and the decision to remain in their homeland. Through the lens of eco-literacy, this script educates readers that the relationship between humans and the environment is not merely about a place to live, but an emotional attachment that determines sovereignty over water, food, and living space in the future.
