Abstract

In the field of tourism, English serves as a global language of communication between tour guides and international tourists, as well as in relation to tourist attractions, culture, history, food, beverages, accommodations, transportation, souvenirs, services, and many other aspects. The needs analysis/assessment requires the synchronization of the demand (tourism users) and supply (English for tourism). In the Indonesian context, there has been an increasing market demand from the tourism sector for higher education institutions to provide their best graduates with relevant and aligned skills. This study investigates the industry's needs for English in the context of hotel and tourism courses. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, using both quantitative data from surveys and qualitative data from interviews. The results indicate that ten out of twelve topics in the English for Hotel and Tourism book of the English Education program at Universitas Terbuka are relevant to the respondents' occupations/industries. However, two topics were deemed by most respondents to be irrelevant to their jobs. For improvement, this study recommends that these two irrelevant topics be altered or modified.

Abstract

Construction development in Indonesia is experiencing rapid progress, leading to various innovations in concrete mixtures using organic waste. Aren Tree Powder (ATP) waste is a solid waste from the tapioca industry obtained from the extraction process. One way to utilize this waste is by incorporating it into concrete mixtures as a substitute for fine aggregate, thereby reducing waste that pollutes the environment. The purpose of the research is to determine the compressive strength of concrete with a mixture of Aren Tree Powder (ATP) as a substitute for fine aggregate at 0%, 10%, and 20%. The research method used is experimental testing with concrete cylinder test specimens measuring 15cm in diameter and 30cm in height. The number of samples for each mix variation is 3 test specimens. The compressive strength test was conducted on concrete cylinder specimens that had cured for 28 days. The test results show average compressive strength values of 24.01MPa, 23.97MPa, 22.91MPa, at variations of 0%, 10%, 20%. The compressive strength of the concrete decreased by 0.16%, 4.52% for the 10%, 20% variations compared to normal concrete. The conclusion of the research shows that concrete with 10% and 20% variations falls into the medium-strength category, which can be used for reinforced concrete structures

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the ability to solve problems and think critically through problem-based learning. The problem-based learning framework supports talent abilities by shaping students' thinking. This study involved students of class VIII-A SMP PGRI 4 Medan. The research approach used descriptive qualitative. SMP PGRI 4 Medan became the locus of the 2024/2025 research. This study used interviews and assessments of problem solving and critical thinking. The results showed that students' mathematical problem solving abilities averaged 65, which was moderate. Students' critical thinking averaged 66.9, which was moderate. The difficulties faced by students by comparing the results of the interview can be seen that students have difficulties in the four indicators of problem solving and critical thinking abilities. Where students ignore or do not recheck or draw conclusions and only concentrate on the solution procedure. This study shows that students have moderate problem solving and critical thinking skills when dealing with a system of linear equations of two variables.
