Abstract

Exploitation of language in commercial sector is inexorable. Language does not only work to articulate meaning but also to send and build image. In this sense, language has been commodified. This fact becomes more obvious in tourism industry in which language plays vital role to construct brand as well as to reach targeted profit. Based on these premises, this research aims to unravel the phenomenon of language commodification in Baturraden Tourism areas within the framework of Linguistic Landscape. The descriptive qualitative research was conducted through observation, documentation and interview. Data in the forms of photographs were gathered to be analyzed and interpreted to capture the language commodification manifested in the selected areas. The analysis shows that language commodification is materialized through the use of Indonesian, English and Javanese. English serves a dominant language in this tourism industry. Most tourist destinations prefer using English to Indonesian as national language to label their place. The issue of branding therefore becomes obvious to elevate the market and effectively attract the visitors. English, rather than functions as referential meaning, serves economic functions. Here, English is more powerful than other given languages. English offers higher prestige, modernity and promising brand to be beneficial for this industry. Then, Javanese is maintained to introduce the history or local legend as well as to bring the sense of authenticity.

Abstract

Japan is famous as an advanced manufacturing industrial country as a result of the high rationality in their works, however in daily life Japanese people still highly believe in the existence of Youkai, mythological creatures. This study examined the figures and meanings of Tengu, mythological creatures that are classified as Youkai which one of them is, as described in the Japanese folklore, having long nose and fully-red colored body. The data for this study are the folklore taken from the anthology book Nihon Mukashi Banashi 101 edited by Sayumi Kawauchi (2007). The figures and existence of Tengu in the folklore were practically analyzed using the Peirce's semiotic theory, with the focus on the meaning of icons, indexes, and symbols of Tengu in the folklore and the Japanese belief system. Moreover, this study revealed two figure types of Tengu namely daitengu, is a tengu whose long nose and kotengu whose eagle-like wings. In the Japanese belief system, it is believed that Tengu are mountain guardians, for example the Mount Takao, one of the places which is believed to be a Tengu habitat. Tengu is as well believed to have objects with supernatural powers such as kakuremino (a cloak) and ha uchiwa (a fan). The descriptions in the folklore clearly show that these Tengu actually exist, although the fact in reality is different. Regardless of either the presence or absence of these mythological creatures in the real world, furthermore, the folklore narrative shows that modern Japanese society still has a strong belief in the existence of Tengu. Stories about Tengu along with other mythological creatures continue to be passed on from a generation to another in both oral and written forms that indicates that Japanese people do not ever detach themselves from their old belief system.

Abstract

This study investigates images of black (and white) characters in contemporary American slavery-themed novel written by white authors, focusing on two novels, Property (2003) and Rhett Butler’s People (2007). The theoretical hegemony of Gramsci is utilized to suggest that if the slavery-themed novel is still rewritten in the era of twenty-first century, it should have a new insight about racism and should be also understood. Three points that revealed by this article dealing with hegemonic discourse on both novels; the representation of black beauty, black behavior, and the relation of black-white attested that the white supremacy is still sustained in the USA. The change of the story composition is there, but the racist ideology kept existed in the subtle way.

Abstract

Despite the progress over the years, there are still many challenges to achieving basic human  rights,  namely  “gender  equality”.  The  language  of  “gender  equality”  was mobilized by feminists as a way to incorporate women's rights into the international development agenda. Using bibliometric analysis of scientific journal articles taken from the Scopus database, which totaled 504 journal articles, this study aims to document evidence of research activities in 2012-2021 in the Scopus database, and visualize it using VOSviewer and NVivo 12 plus software. The article reports on the publication and its citation structure, key trends, and its growing push toward co-authoring. This study also visualizes  the  most  prominent  topics  and  authors  in  the  form  of  a  network,  using VOSviewer's bibliometric analysis and mapping of themes and their correlations using NVivo 12 plus. The novelty of this research is the composition of limitations in the Scopus database,  as  well  as  data  processing  using  VOSviewer  and  NVivo  12  plus  software. Further research, it is necessary to enrich the composition of limitations in the Scopus database, and compare it with the Web of Science database.

Abstract

This article is a translation product oriented study designed to investigate a systemic way of analyzing the divergent of Ideational metafunction realizations in novel graphic translation using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The objectives of this study are to identify divergent of ideational realizations in the translation and what cause them. The study is a descriptive qualitative with an embedded case study. The linguistics data of this study included all the lingual units of translation namely clauses, phrases and words in the monologue and dialogue of the main character in graphic novel V for Vendetta: Europe After Reign by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. The content analysis is used to determine the divergent of Ideational metafunction meanings in translation by comparing the source texts and target texts. The results show the divergent of Ideational realizations in the translation occur in (1) experiential meaning (transitivity structure and lexical items) (2) logical meaning. The divergences in transitivity structure and lexical items are caused by idiom phrases, politeness strategy, and intertextuality. The logical subtype divert in clauses interdependency which caused by two factors namely (1) the translation not maintaining the structure of the source language by downgrading in clause rank and (2) the limitations of the speech balloon format.

This study aims to describe types of meanings and identify the semantic relations of place names, as well as explains the migration in Minangkabau on the West Coast of Sumatra. A qualitative research was used where sources of data were taken from interview, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and documents. The interview and FGD were conducted to society figures, community leaders and government officials. The documents include the names of 22 sub-districts in 11 districts from four provinces, written sources, and other relics related to the names. The findings show that the place names provide knowledge about the relations of the meaning and socio-cultural values. The relation among the meanings of the place names includes synonymy and antonym that reflects the migration of Minangkabau in West Coast of Sumatra. The results also indicated that toponymy studies are very important because the naming of places has not received attention among the communities and has not been a study of interest.

The data for this study is two bilingual talks of Oliver Prass in KOMPAS TV. The CDA is adopted as tool to explore and discover racism ideology though language representation. The result on textual dimension with transitivity process depicts that racism ideology occurs in different forms to show effect of personal feeling and psychological effect from racist people toward the victims. In discursive dimension, to emphasize a hidden agenda of a discourse requires the speaker status and position during producing the language; for instance, as social activist, victims, and Indonesian. Then in social practices implies the reason why racism is existing; those are as a defense mechanism, economic anxiety, personality profile and power as well as authority abuse by the government that may lead to racism treatment on minorities by discrimination and negative prejudice.

Abstract

One of the crucial-cultural matters experinced by all colonialized nations, not to mention Indonesia, is their incapability in becoming free from the shackles of colonialism syndrome. In terms of Indonesian context, for instance, this problem, can be easily identified almost in every existing layer of its civilization system, not to mention in fine arts, either in its artifact, sociofact or ideofact level that is under the infuence of Western hegemony. For this reason, this particular study focuses on: firstly, describing the construction of Western character hegemony found in fine arts in Indonesia; and secondly, identifying for an outlet from the issue of Western hegemony in Indonesian fine arts. The qualitative-hermeneutic approach was used to explain that phenomenon. The analysis of data found through out this study revealed the following results. West hegemony has become an obsession curse beyond all of desire, in its cultural performance in this postcolonial era. This is what merely called the ‘becoming white’ phenomenon. In Indonesian contexts, the construction of this phenomenon particularly in fine arts world is manifested in its hegemonic historiography embodiment that is dissolved in the Western centric mainstream. Hence, a set of strategic cultural processes are necessary to be conducted for the sake of finding the best solution towards that problem. And one of the processes is by conducting methodological deconstruction over all knowledge epistemology including fine arts knowledge existed and owned by this nation.
