Abstract

This paper discusses the representation of the lower class and social reality in Japan through the film Shoplifters. This film is analyzed using the representation theory of Stuart Hall, with critical discourse analysis. The characters in the film are members of a marginalized social class who voice problems of poverty, stigmatization, family problems, and social alienation that on the other hand, are clashed with humanism values. The result of this study indicate that Shoplifters is a social critique that represent the lower class in Japan. The humanistic side shown by the characters through their attitude and dialogue becomes a paradox, as an effort to fight the stigmatization of the lower class that has taken root due to sociohistorical factors. Japan's advancement has impact on the alienation which they tried to overcome by building social cohesion in the form of a family.

Abstract

The history of Malacca as a port city has brought together the acculturation of cultures from various ethnicities. Thus, this is influencing the current image of Malacca and being dubbed The World Heritage City by UNESCO. This study aims to read the identity of the Malacca region represented through artifacts, archival management, archives stored in information institutions and building sites. The role of traditional institutions, the archival institution of the Malacca State Archives (ANM) and the Perbadanan Muzium Melaka (Perzim) in shaping a culture of memory through documentation work and archives management has a major impact on strengthening the identity of the Malacca region as an area with rich cultural values and historical narratives that surround it. In this case, cultural practices and documentation works are human rights so that it requires recognition from the government and society. This is also inseparable from the role of community, customary institutions and information institutions in safeguarding regional collective memory, preserving local wisdom and regional historicity through documentation work and holistic archives management. In general, the Malacca identity is deeply rooted in the social, economic, and cultural activities of the community.

Abstract

This study examines the process of the drama staging project "Jalan Asmarandana" adapted from the short story by Kuntowijoyo. The research problem concerns, how can drama become a tool for social conflict management? as for the object of analysis in the form of process data for the drama staging project "Jalan Asmarandana" by students in the fifth semester of the 2018 academic year, the Indonesian Language and Literature Education study program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Singaperbangsa Karawang. The theory used in analyzing the data is Dorothy Heathcote's theory, as a theory of conflict resolution approach, namely as-if experience, reflection, and negotiation. The method used is descriptive qualitative method. The results of the research students might feel like they are someone else with the as-if experience training project, and it has been offered multiple views on an issue encountered by students through the roles they play. Reflection teaches us that life is a sequence of experiences tinted by life's issues at all times. Drama is a reflection of life. Finally, negotiation training gives students indirect experience with how to communicate, collaborate, and discuss with a group, particularly the drama production team.

Abstract

Technology-assisted interpreting (TAI) signifies a binary concern encompassing not only the interpreting process but also the technology used. One of the technologies playing crucial roles in signifying the quality of interpreting is note-taking technology. Thereby we argue that note-taking technologies used in TAI require a specific quality assessment since they influence the process and result of interpreting. We propose a conceptual framework for a quality assessment specifically designed for note-taking technologies used in TAI by taking Aarseth’s textonomy theory (1997), Costa, Pastor, and Muňes’s technology aid based interpreting classification theory (2014), O’Brien and Toms’s user engagement theory (2008), Venkatesh and Davis’s technology acceptance model (2000), and Friedman’s immersion theory (2014). We propose that the note-taking technology quality assessment has to address three primary considerations. They are functional parameters, user’s function considerations, and  interpreting types. Functional parameters, which assess the interaction between users and note-taking technologies, consist of engagement, acceptance, and immersion. User’s functions, comprising of interpretive, explorative, and configurative functions, assist the assessors in comprehending the characteristics of particular note-taking technologies. Interpreting types, classified based on the technology dominantly used in the interpreting process, helps the assessors indicate which technology fits what interpreting types.

Abstract

Abstract Violence against women is a gender issue that often appears in literary works. In cases where those works become translated, this theme may experience shifts in context from the source text to the target text, which can cause a shift in meaning as well. This research aims to discern how expressions of violence against women as narrated in a source text become translated into the target text. In this qualitative descriptive study, data in the forms of words, phrases, or sentences denoting violence against women have been taken from the French novel Syngué Sabour and its Indonesian translation, Batu Kesabaran. The results show that the expressions related to verbal and sexual violence were translated by means of overlexicalization. The translator employed this strategy to place emphasis on the problems raised, although the results give the impression that the translator portrays women in an exceedingly inferior and negative manner. On the other hand, expressions related to physical violence, murder, and human trafficking tend to use a more neutral language. This is true since the issue of violence against women in literary works can be seen not only through the chosen diction but also through the characters’ actions and behaviors.

The data source used is the text of political discourse in the Indonesian national mass media (kompas, antaranews, republika, detik, and waspada). Research data in the form of lingual units, both lexical and grammatical in the form of metaphors. The data collection method is used by the concept of metaphor identification procesure, while the data processing method is carried out based on conceptual metaphor analysis through three classifications, namely structural, ontological and orientational metaphors. The data analysis method uses referential methods, to show and compare references or meanings contained in the realm of source and target metaphorical speech. The study found that the types of conceptual metaphors in political discourse are identical through attempts at concretizing abstract concepts. The expression of political metaphor is a form of simplification of concepts that are correlated with human sensory experience. Ontological metaphors give a living perception of inanimate objects, both concrete and abstract. Ontological metaphors also allow units of language to present space to be filled and juxtaposed with other concepts because they have similar substances. While orientational metaphors tend to point to parts of the human body through the association of political terminology and cultural realities in society.
