Abstract

This study entitled Question Tag Features Used by Female Characters in the To All The Boys Movies. The aims of this study are to identify the kinds of question tag features in the women characters and describe the context of the situation of the conversation containing question tags in the To All the Boys movies. The source of the data was taken from the conversation of “To All The Boys” movies. The research design was descriptive qualitative research. The analysis was based on the three-question tag from Holmes’s theory; they are the modal tag to ask for information or confirmation of the information, affective tag to reduce the force of an impolite request, and the facilitative tag to invite the listeners to take a conversation and comment. This data was also analysed based on the context of the situation from Holmes's theory. The result shows that there are thirteen data from the conversation in the movie to perform the question tag. The feature of question tags that occurs dominantly in the movie is a modal tag. The six cases comprise a modal tag of two cases, a facilitative tag of two cases, and a softeners tag of two cases. Meanwhile, for the context of the situation factors that most influence the speaker to use question tags are participant, setting, topic, and function. Based on the result of the study, it is fruitful to suggest the students of English Department to do further analysis about the three of question tags used in other resources like movies, novels, or articles. Abstract

The goal of this research is to describe usage of polite and impolite language in the film Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler, as a means of persuasion. Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness and Culpeper and Hardaker’s theory of impoliteness was used as the foundational theory of this study. Dialogue and character action from four scenes were analyzed with the qualitative descriptive method to explain how the first party tried to get the second party to do what was asked of them. Results indicate that a varied mix of politeness and impoliteness are utilized as a means of persuasion. Multiple times the first party would often start with polite strategies such as noticing the second party’s interests and quickly devolve into impoliteness such as the bald on record impoliteness superstrategy like. threats as a way to expedite the negotiations with the second party. This shows that a speaker that can adapt strategy usage to the mood of the situation is pivotal to the persuasiveness of the speaker, even if impoliteness like the promise of violence is part of said strategy. This also shows that negotiations can happen as a one sided persuasion battle or a two sided conversation with mutually exclusive goals. Thus this research adds to the body of previous research into how politeness is used as a tool of persuasion, while also offering new insight into how mixing politeness and impoliteness can be critical to persuasion. Abstract

This research aims to decode the sign system encoded in online dating hodiernal expressions. The decoding process involves Barthes' semiotic analysis of myths, structured in expressions, which reveals the connotative meaning and code system underlying these expressions. A qualitative descriptive method was used to analyze the data. The signs were decoded using Barthes' semiotic code to reveal their denotative meaning, which was then expanded into connotative meaning and the code system to expose the myths embedded in the expressions. The findings suggested that the myths were constructed through relations among connotative meanings and code systems. Four of the five code systems were identified; the semantic code system was the majority code, creating connotative meanings, and the others were proaretic, cultural, and symbolic codes. From this research, it can be concluded that the encoded message in expressions carries not only their literal meaning but also their relation to the outside world, namely, their connotative meanings. Therefore, these findings are expected to facilitate the interpretation of all recognized signs, thereby making meaning-making easier.
