Abstract

Teachers' and students' understanding of the molecular structure of DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) is important because it is a fundamental concept that explains the pathogenesis of disease and mutations in cell biology learning. This activity aims to improve Biology teachers' understanding of the molecular structure of DNA. The activity was conducted at SMAN 1 Bululawang Malang, with 39 Biology teachers who were members of Malang's Biology Subject Teachers' Community (MGMP) as participants. The methods used included interactive lectures, group discussions, and case studies on sickle cell anemia. The resources utilized for the community service included laptops connected to Wi-Fi, Google Forms for pre-test and post-test applications, PowerPoint slides for the materials, patient scenario PPT, and laptops. Evaluation was carried out with pre-tests and post-tests to measure the improvement in participants' understanding. The evaluation results showed that participants gave positive feedback regarding the activity. They felt that there was an application of the chemical structure of DNA bands to the shape of DNA, the bioprocess of protein synthesis, and the pathogenesis of sickle cell anemia. A significant increase in conceptual understanding was observed, with an average pre-test score of 67.69 and an average post-test score of 92.05. The five teachers who obtained the highest scores received prizes in the form of medical biology books, which were authored by us. Similar programs are recommended for implementation in other areas to support the improvement of education quality in Indonesia and benefit students who will pursue medical courses.

Abstract

The prevalence of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus continues to increase, including in agricultural communities (farmers). Low treatment compliance can result in increased complications, morbidity and mortality. Medical nutrition therapy is one of the recommended diabetes control measures. Lack of education, understanding of diet, and family support causes many DM patients to not comply with diet therapy recommendations. The purpose of this activity is to provide health education (health promotion) regarding medical nutrition therapy for DM treatment to type 2 DM patients in the agricultural community, conduct a meal planning simulation (DM diet) that is in accordance with the condition of type 2 DM patients, and increase the knowledge and skills of type 2 DM patients in medical nutrition therapy. The method that will be used is health education (promotion) on medical nutrition therapy for type 2 DM patients and a meal planning simulation regarding the DM diet. The results of the evaluation of the implementation of community service showed that there was an increase in the knowledge of participants by 90% to a good knowledge, 10% of participants had a moderate knowledge, and no participants had a poor knowledge of the definition of DM, symptoms and signs, risk factors, treatment/therapy, disease prevention, prevention of complications, medical nutrition therapy/DM diet, exchange foods, recommended and not recommended foods for DM patients and myths and facts about type 2 DM. The average pre-test result was 52.5 and increased in the post-test result of 82. Based on the analysis using the Wilcoxon test, it was found that there was a statistically significant difference in the pre-test and post-test values of community service participants (p = 0.000). The activity of increasing knowledge and skills regarding medical nutrition therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus patients in the agricultural community is a way to improve the ability of the community, especially type 2 DM patients, in managing medical nutrition therapy for type 2 DM, as an effort to prevent worsening and complications. The activity of increasing understanding and skills regarding medical nutrition therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus patients in the agricultural community has proven effective.

Abstract

Nagari Sijunjung Indigenous Village, located in Sijunjung Regency, is a community with substantial agricultural potential. Rice is one of the primary commodities cultivated in this village. Currently, rice farming relies on a rain-fed system, which is highly dependent on the rainy season, resulting in synchronized planting schedules. This practice significantly increases the volume of rice straw waste after the harvest season, while its utilization remains suboptimal. One viable solution to address this issue is processing rice straw into compost. The aim of this program was to enhance the knowledge and skills of local residents in composting rice straw. The socialization activity was attended by 14 participants from Nagari Sijunjung Indigenous Village. Pretests and posttests were employed as evaluation tools to measure changes in participants' knowledge before and after the socialization sessions. The results indicated an improvement in the participants' understanding, as reflected by an increase in the average pretest score from 85.71 to a posttest average score of 87.14. However, among the variables assessed in the pretest and posttest, two variables exhibited a decline in average scores, suggesting that participants’ understanding of these specific aspects requires further attention and improvement.

Abstract

One of the challenges facing many governments today, including the South African government, is eradicating poverty and putting Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) systems in place to support poverty alleviation initiatives. Many poverty alleviation projects under social workers' supervision seem unsustainable even though M&E is performed continuously. This study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of mechanisms applied by social workers to support poverty alleviation projects and to propose the criteria and guidelines for consideration when supporting these projects. This study employed the phenomenological research design with descriptive, exploratory, and contextual research constructs. Purposive sampling was used to select participants, and data was collected using a semi-structured interview guide with open-ended questions in face-to-face interviews. Ethical considerations such as confidentiality, anonymity, and informed consent were followed. This study established a need for participant training on M&E to improve sustainability and accountability. Also, there are no clear standards to guide M&E activities. There is a need for a robust M&E system that should be able to answer the evaluation questions, promote learning, and satisfy accountability needs without being rigidly inflexible. The paper concluded that a lack of structured M&E activities and functioning impact results in poor implementation. Therefore, paying attention to when, how, and who should be involved in monitoring and evaluation will be necessary. The study proffered guidelines for consideration by social service professionals and practice-based initiatives to improve M&E activities initiatives to support projects.

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools play a vital role in Indonesia's educational and social landscape. However, many of these institutions continue to face challenges in ensuring transparent and accountable financial management. Most rely on manual and basic record-keeping methods, lacking adherence to established accounting guidelines and the support of effective financial applications to streamline financial reporting and documentation. To address these issues, a Community Service (PkM) initiative was conducted to introduce Islamic boarding school accounting guidelines and provide hands-on assistance in using the Technology-Based Santri and Cooperative Financial System (Siskesakti) application. This initiative aimed to enhance participants' understanding and skills in financial management, ensuring compliance with accounting principles while integrating digital tools for financial administration. The program employed counseling and Participant Active Learning methods, allowing participants to engage actively in the learning process. The participants included financial administrators and teachers from partner Islamic boarding schools, including the Nurul Huda Banin Banat Islamic Boarding School, along with several other beneficiary institutions. The results of the program demonstrated a significant improvement in participants' comprehension of systematic financial management and their readiness to implement digital financial tools. With this assistance, partner Islamic boarding schools are expected to adopt a more structured, transparent, and accountable financial system, thereby supporting the institution’s long-term sustainability and financial integrity.

Abstract

Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) are central to community development projects, typically couched as necessary for accountability, learning, and measuring impact. There is a widespread suspicion that monitoring too often benefits bureaucracy more than meaningful social change. This article considers the tension between compliance-oriented monitoring and transformative effects. Based on critical literature and empirical data, it asks whether existing M&E practice can be disproportionately donor-focused and data-driven at the expense of community empowerment and learning. It contends that monitoring is necessary, but its worth depends on its design and implementation. The article invites a move towards participatory, context-sensitive monitoring practice focused on local relevance, learning, and long-term effects rather than box-ticking rituals.
