Abstract

The objective in the research are to find out whether teaching vocabulary through pictures can improve the students’ vocabulary comprehension, and are the students’ interest in learning vocabulary through pictures at SMP Negeri 3 Merauke and the subject in this research was eight grade students B and C in SMP Negeri 3 Merauke. The research method using divided into quasi-experimental research. This sample of the research consisted of 40 students divided into two groups namely: 20 students to experimental group and 20 students to control group and conclude the data using two instruments; the vocabulary test for the students’ vocabulary achievement was analyzed used SPSS and the questionnaire was used to see students' interest in English learning vocabulary. To the result indicated that the through pictures media improves the vocabulary of the eight grade students in SMP Negeri 3 Merauke. It was proven by the mean score of posttest of experimental group which higher than the mean score of control group in vocabulary test (81.5>51.7) and the difference was statistically significant based on the result of the t-test of posttest indicated the probability value is smaller than alpha value (0.00<0.05). It means that, the use of pictures media was more effective to improving students vocabulary comprehension of the eight grade Students of SMP Negeri 3 Merauke than without using pictures media and the students also more interested in learning English vocabulary by using picture media than without using pictures media. As indicated by the results score of the questionnaire, namely there were twelve students or 60% to score are the strongly interested classification and eight students or 40% are the interested classifications. It means that, most of the students were interested in English learning vocabulary through pictures media in learning process. Keywords: improving; vocabulary; comprehension; pictures

Abstract

Interesting is an essential thing needs for optimal achievement in learning English. Good interesting surely creates motivation well. As an English creative teacher is being expected familiar to using media for stimulate pupils’ Interesting, to enumerate, flash card. This paper addresses the issue of experience in using narrative flash card can be used as a media to work-up learners’ interested into learn English language. Henceforth, descriptive qualitative is a design to analysis data, whereas getting data, it used observation, interview for students and teacher. And, the results showed (1) the using of narrative flash card absolutely increasing students’ interesting to learn English significantly, (2) balancing cognitive development (3) stolen-technique to motivate learners, (4) welcoming socioaffective, (5) narrative flash card as role-play media and the lastly, gadget acquisition vocabulary. Abstract

This research concerns the analysis of slang in the song lyrics of The Black Eyed Peas entitled Boom Boom Pow, Imma Be, Pump It, Shut Up, My Humps. The are two objectives in this research, namely to tell types of the slang appeared in this song, and to explain the meaning of slang. This analysis use descriptive method due to the fact that this research describe the meaning of the slangs. The data were taken from the song lyrics of The Black Eyed Peas entitled Boom Boom Pow, Imma Be, Pump It, Shut Up and My Humps. The researcher uses document and records method to gather the data which is by taking note of the slangs appeared in this song, then classifying them by their types, after that explaining their meaning, the researcher analyzing the meanings of the slang using an American Slang Dictionary and the researcher also asked the help of a Native American in analyzing the meanings of slang, finally, give a conclusion. The researcher found there are 37 total data of slangs in the song lyrics of The Black Eyed Peas entitled Boom Boom Pow, Imma Be, Pump It, Shut Up and My Humps. Then there are 37 total data of the meaning of slangs in the song lyrics of The Black Eyed Peas entitled Boom Boom Pow, Imma Be, Pump It, Shut Up and My Humps.

Abstract

This research was conducted to describe the kinds of flouting maxims employed by the characters in the movie entitled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” and to explain the purpose or reasons of the characters in the film flouted maxims in their dialogue and utterances. This analysis will use descriptive qualitative and total sampling technique. The data of this research are the dialogues containing maxims that were uttered by the characters in the movie. The data are classified based on Grice’s Theory of Flouting Maxims. Technique of collecting data is documentation. Technique of analyzing data is Referential Identity Method and Triangulation for validation of the data. The researcher found there are four types of flouting maxims. Totally, there are 62 data conducted maxims such as 9 data Maxims of Quality (14,51%), 19 data of Maxims of Quantity (30,64%), 16 data Maxims of Relevance (25,80%) and 18 data Maxims of Manner (29,05%). Secondly, the reasons of the characters in the movie in employing flouting maxims in their dialogues are: privacy and profession reason used to flout Maxims of Quality; confirmation and refusal reason used to flout Maxims of Quantity; safety, education, anger and privacy reason used to flout Maxims of Relevance; empathy, and humor reason used to flout Maxims of Manner.

Abstract

This research focuses on translation method and the impact of translation method toward translation quality of interrogative sentence in the Harvest Moon: Back to Nature video game. Descriptive qualitative method is applied in this research. The data are the interrogative sentences found in the Harvest Moon: Back to Nature video game and its translation. The source data are the video game entitled Harvest Moon: Back to Nature developed by Victor Interactive Software, published by Natsume and its translation by PALAPA. The results of the research show that there are 4 methods applied to the translation namely Communicative Translation, Literal Translation, Free Translation, and Word-for-Word Translation. From 71 data of interrogative sentence in Harvest Moon: Back to Nature video game, the dominant translation method used is Communicative Translation with 36 data (50.7%). For the translation quality. From 71 data, 53 data categorized as accurate translation (74.6%), 60 data categorized as acceptable translation (84.5%), and 68 data categorized as readable translation (95.8%). The translation methods applied in translating interrogative in the video game can produce good quality translation.

Abstract

This study aims to (1) find out the persistence concept of fisherman as described in the Old man and the Sea novel viewed from Makassar perspective, (2) find out the concept similarity and different concept between two different cultures. This study used a qualitative method to analyze a text in the novel and viewed it from Makassar perspective by taking a reference book of discussing the Makassar culture and then study from a cultural perspective of Makassar to strengthen this research, the research also interviewed to fisherman as addition data. The finding indicated that there are four concepts on how persistent of a fisherman in catching fish. The four concepts are 1) struggle, 2) sacrifice, 3) personal concern, and 4) religious obedience. There are similarities and difference in these four concepts from two different cultures is struggle and sacrifice.

Abstract

The various kinship address pairs are found in the domain of a nuclear family in relationships a husband and wife namely bapak-ibu, mas-dik, bapak-emak, bapak-mbok, ayah-ibu, bapak/ayah/mas-a nick name of child or a nick name of a wife. The factors influence the uses of this pair are not only sex but also the speaker’s status such as economy, education, etc; city or rural areas, speaker’s mobility, speaker’s opinion, familiarity, prestigious, education, and meaning which contains in a kinship address. In this husband-wife relationship, social attributes are commonly used by a husband to his wife and by a wife to her husband, contrast to English speakers in western countries. Then, the use of dedek is because of age for small children but mas/mbak, dik, pak/bulek, pak/bude, etc are because of other partisipants in nuclear and extended families. Mbah in an extended family and non-family is not completely age to be considered in usage but putu or grandchild. In various nuclear families, mas/mbak-dik appears in the family whose (a) parent(s) profession are/is (a) teacher(s) on Islamic lesson and their activity in Islam whereas others who have different profession and activity use mas/mbak-proper name and family in the lowest class does not use these social attributes at all. Furthermore, this research also reveals that ngajari not only for educating smooth language to small children but also for educating the uses of kinship addresses to small children, children, and teens who are involved or not involved in the communication. Finally, the kinship addresses are chosen based on socio, pragmatic, and religious factors which are the culture of Javanese speakers.

Abstract

This research used a descriptive qualitative method used to analyze data. Figurative language was analyzed based on theories from Perrine which involves: simile, metaphor, personification, apostrophe, synecdoche, metonymy, symbol, allegory, paradox, hyperbole, understatement, and irony. This research purposes to find out the types of figurative language, to know the most dominant and the submissive figurative language and to reveal the purposes meaning of figurative language used in poetry by Maya Angelou with title Life Does Not Frighten Me, Equality, and Alone. The data source from poetry collection by Maya Angelou with titled ‘Life Does Not Frighten Me’, ‘Equality’, and ‘Alone’. The techniques of collecting data used by the researcher are documentation via internet. The data was analyzed through four stages: a) Coding, b) Data Reduction, c) Data Display, and d) Conclusion. The researchers concluded the result of this research were 39 poem lyric that containing 11 figurative languages types. The dominant figurative language types is Hyperbole and the submissive figurative language is Paradox and Irony. The researchers found 11 purposes meaning of figurative language that can reveal new predictable to force readers to imagine what writer wants to express.

Abstract

Abstract Many people agree that English is an essential language because English is an international language. In Indonesia, students learn English since they are at kindergarten and primary level, and we can call them young learners. This study is going to find students need analysis Of English Learning For Elementary Schools. In this study, the researcher used a qualitative descriptive method and data presentation as supporting data. This study's participant is students from fourth-grade elementary school at MIS Al – Mujahidah Bogor Regency. To get the data, the researcher use questionnaire and documentation (Textbook) as an instrument. This study shows the students interested in the book containing animated cartoon and games or interactive activity for them. The textbook that is not emphasized to the student’s elementary school age can be an obstacle or the difficulties for students to learn English. It can make the students not interested to learn English. So, the institution needs to double-check before choosing students textbooks because there is some deficiency in the book that makes it difficult for students to learn. Abstract

This study aims to prove and describe whether audio media can improve listening skills especially in listening to news broadcasts. One class consisted of 30 students as the sample namely class VIII.1 of Junior High School 2 Mattiro Bulu, Pinrang Regency. A simple random sampling is a technique in choosing the sample. Written tests and oral tests were the tools in collecting the data. The obtaining data analyzed in descriptive statistical techniques and inferential statistics t-test type. Based on the result of the study, the ability to listen to the news of students in class VIII.1 using audio media is categorized as medium. Students who met the standard Minimum completion criteria were 26 students (87%) get the standard Minimum completion criteria and 4 students (13%) who did not reach the Minimum completion criteria. Therefore, audio media can improve the ability of students to listen to the news. Listening learning fulfills three indicators, including learning quality, learning quantity, and time. Hypothesis test results = 2.682 > t table = 2.045. This shows that the proposed research hypothesis is accepted.
