Abstract

Adolescent mental health significantly influences social well-being and academic achievement, yet empirical data remains scarce in Cambodia. This study examined the association between sociodemographic characteristics and mental health status among Cambodian secondary school students using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). A cross-sectional survey was conducted from March to April 2024 across five major provinces and Phnom Penh. Using purposive sampling, 1,528 students from urban and rural schools were recruited. Abnormal mental health was reported by 50.56% of females and 52.33% of students whose mothers had only elementary education. T-test and ANOVA analyses revealed significant associations between mental health and gender, school location, school type, and maternal education (p < 0.001), while socioeconomic status showed no significant impact. Findings emphasize that gender and maternal education are primary correlates of psychological well-being. These results necessitate gender-responsive school health programs and decentralized mental health services in rural areas. Furthermore, community initiatives should prioritize maternal health literacy to empower mothers as central caregivers, fostering supportive home environments for student resilience.

Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia affects approximately 30% of Indonesian women of reproductive age, underscoring the urgent need for affordable, iron-rich food interventions. This study investigated the effect of red Amaranth (Amaranthus tricolor L.) flour substitution on iron content, antioxidant activity, and sensory acceptability of composite flour cookies. A completely randomized design was employed with five substitution levels (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%), each with three replications, yielding 15 experimental units of cookie batches. Iron content was determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry, antioxidant activity via the DPPH method, and sensory acceptability through hedonic testing by 30 semi-trained panelists. Results demonstrated that iron content increased significantly (p < 0.05) with higher substitution levels, while antioxidant activity improved from very weak to moderate categories. However, sensory acceptability declined significantly at substitution levels of 30% and above, particularly in color and taste attributes. The 20% substitution level emerged as the optimal formulation, achieving substantially elevated iron content contributing meaningfully toward the recommended dietary allowance per serving, enhanced antioxidant capacity, and maintained good sensory acceptability across all attributes. These findings suggest that red Amaranth-substituted cookies represent a feasible, community-level dietary strategy for complementing existing iron deficiency anemia prevention programs in Indonesia.

Abstract

Postpartum maternal health services are routinely administered to postpartum mothers four times daily. In reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic, modifications have transpired in healthcare services, encompassing postpartum maternal health. Virtual homecare services facilitate remote interaction with patients without utilizing healthcare services. This study aims to assess the impact of virtual postpartum maternal classes on knowledge, early detection skills, and treatment-seeking behaviors. This study employs a quantitative methodology utilizing a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design. A virtual postpartum mothers’ class program was conducted every two weeks for three months. The total population consists of 109 individuals, while the purposive sample comprises 32 individuals. Data acquisition through questionnaires (pre-tests and post-tests). Conduct an analysis of the data utilizing the Wilcoxon signed ranks test. The study's findings demonstrate a substantial impact of virtual postpartum mother class mentoring on knowledge levels (p = 0.000), early detection of complications by postpartum mothers (p = 0.001), and treatment-seeking behavior (p = 0.001). The introduction of virtual postpartum maternal classes significantly enhances postpartum mothers' knowledge, their capacity to identify postpartum complications, and their propensity to seek treatment.

Abstract

Postoperative pain is a common clinical problem that may compromise physiological stability and delay recovery, potentially reducing oxygenation, increasing infection risk, and prolonging hospitalization. This study aimed to examine the correlation between postoperative pain intensity and oxygen saturation levels. This study employed a quantitative correlational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach using retrospective medical record data. Data were collected at a single time point, with both postoperative pain intensity and oxygen saturation (SpO₂) measured simultaneously at approximately 12 hours after surgery when patients were clinically stable in the postoperative ward. A total of 208 eligible patients were included using total sampling. Data were analyzed descriptively and using the Chi-square test, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. The results showed that 74% of patients experienced severe pain and 26% mild pain, while 49.5% presented with reduced oxygen saturation. A statistically significant association was identified between pain intensity and oxygen saturation (p < 0.001). Patients with low oxygen saturation were 25.5 times more likely to report severe pain (OR = 25.505; 95% CI: 6.379-101.979). In conclusion, postoperative pain intensity is significantly associated with oxygen saturation levels. These findings support the integration of subjective pain assessment with objective physiological monitoring, and future prospective studies are recommended to clarify causal relationships.

Abstract

Depression is a critical global mental health problem that occurs frequently in adolescent in Thailand and can lead to severe consequences, including suicide. Near field communication (NFC) provides a new way for accessing user to data of mental health care. The objectives this study was to determine the effects of NFC on depressive symptoms. A quasi-experimental two-group pretest-posttest was designed. The provincial school was randomly allocated to the control group CON, NFC groups. Each group consisted 50 participants aged 16-18 years who had depression scores 22 on the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D). The NFC group used NFC-enabled smartphones and NFC tags for four weeks in their home environment. The first paticipants were assigned developing self awareness, the second were assigned emotional expression, third were assigned coping strategies, the finally the participants were recieved reflection activity, and SC group received standard care and followed their normal daily routines. After completing intervention, participans responded CES-D. The results indicated that depressive symptoms in the NFC group significantly decreased post-intervention compared to the baseline p < .05. Furthermore, the NFC group demonstrated significantly lower depression scores than the control group after completing the program p < .05. In conclusion, NFC technology is an effective decreasing depressive symptom in adolescents with depression.

Abstract

Early menopause and perimenopause are increasingly recognized as critical women’s health issues due to their substantial hormonal instability, heightened symptom burden, and negative impact on quality of life. Safe non-hormonal interventions remain limited, particularly in community settings, despite growing evidence supporting phytoestrogens and mind body therapies. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a 12-week holistic intervention integrating phytoestrogen nutrition, Damask rose aromatherapy, and guided relaxation on hormonal regulation, metabolic markers, menopausal symptoms, and quality of life among early menopausal and perimenopausal women. Using a quasi-experimental design, 44 participants received soy-based dietary supplementation, nightly aromatherapy, and structured relaxation practices, with pre-post assessments of estradiol, lipid profile, fasting glucose, Menopausal Rating Scale (MRS), and Menopause-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire (MENQOL). The intervention produced significant improvements across all domains, including increased estradiol (p < 0.001), reduced low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and fasting glucose (p = 0.001-0.003), and substantial reductions in menopausal symptoms and psychological distress (p < 0.001). Early menopausal women exhibited greater improvements, reflecting their higher biological sensitivity to multimodal interventions. These findings demonstrate the potential of integrated, non-hormonal strategies to address complex menopausal changes, with practical implications for community-based women’s health programs. Study limitations include the modest sample size and quasi-experimental design, highlighting the need for larger controlled trials.

Abstract

Parental divorce has increased in Indonesia and may adversely affect adolescents’ psychological well-being. However, limited qualitative research has explored how adolescents interpret divorce within the Indonesian sociocultural context. This study aimed to explore adolescents’ experiences of psychological well-being following parental divorce and identify coping processes that foster resilience. A qualitative study using an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) approach was conducted. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with five female adolescents aged 14-15 years who had experienced parental divorce. Participants were purposively recruited from a junior high school in Bekasi, Indonesia. Data were analyzed using IPA to examine lived experiences and meaning-making processes. Three themes emerged: i) self-acceptance and identity reconstruction, ii) relational ecosystems as double-edged support systems, and iii) transition from survival strategies to purposeful autonomy. Participants described grief, self-blame, academic disruption, and social stigma. However, supportive relationships with peers, extended family, and teachers promoted adaptive coping and resilience. These findings highlight that parental divorce affects adolescent psychological well-being, but supportive environments can mitigate negative outcomes. School-based mental health programs, anti-stigma initiatives, and culturally sensitive counseling services are recommended to support adolescents experiencing family transitions.

Abstract

Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) is a major air pollutant generated from fossil fuel combustion in transportation and industrial activities and is associated with adverse health effects. Prolonged exposure to NO₂ may induce chronic inflammation and endothelial dysfunction, which contribute to the development of hypertension. This study aimed to systematically review the association between NO₂ exposure and the incidence of hypertension among workers. The review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, with literature searches performed in Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect for publications from 2020 to 2025. Inclusion criteria comprised full-text articles in English or Indonesian employing observational study designs (cross-sectional, cohort, case-control, or ecological) and involving workers in both formal and informal sectors. Eligible studies examined NO₂ exposure as the independent variable and hypertension as the outcome. Of 2,051 records identified, five studies met the inclusion criteria, originating from China and Nigeria. Risk of bias was assessed using the office of health assessment and translation (OHAT) risk of bias tool. The findings demonstrated a consistent association between NO₂ exposure and an increased risk of hypertension, particularly in poorly ventilated work environments. These results underscore the importance of improving workplace air quality management, strengthening exposure monitoring, and implementing preventive occupational health strategies.
