Abstract

This study explores the trend of using podcasts and storytelling approaches as a new way to market regional tourism, in Indonesia. In the last two years, there has been a significant increase in access to audio on demand content in Indonesia. The use of new media such as podcasts in the promotion of the tourism sector is inevitable. Research on podcasts in Indonesia, especially tourism podcasts, is still not prevalent. However, the use of podcast platforms by actors in the tourism sector is starting to emerge. The storytelling approach is also increasingly important for the tourism sector because a good authentic story has the potential to create a better sense of place and connections. This study seeks to explore the opportunities and challenges of tourism podcasts, as well as the importance of the storytelling approach for marketing regional tourism in Indonesia. The method used in this study is a literature review which includes the process of reading and analyzing articles in journals, previous research reports, reference books and news related to podcasts. The results of the study show that podcast is an important marketing tool to enrich information on tourist destinations in Indonesia, and of course help encourage regional tourism marketing. This research is expected to be an input and recommendation to practitioners, government, communities, private sector and researchers to work together to equip tourism activities in various regions with podcasting and storytelling skills as a new way to develop tourism marketing in Indonesia.

Abstract

There is a gross paucity of science communication researches in Nigeria and no research data exists on engagement in science communication between science and communication scholars in Nigeria. This gap necessitated this study. To gather data, we analyzed twelve departmental handbooks of six universities offering science and communication courses to determine the extent to which science communication was provided for in their curricula. We also conducted interviews with science and communication leaders in the selected twelve departments in the six universities to gauge their involvement in science communication. Some of the key findings were that both science and communication disciplines did not give science communication a commendable emphasis. Also, many academic leaders interviewed did not actually get involved in various science communication activities examined. Based on these findings, we conclude that science communication pedagogy, practice, and scholarship in Nigeria are very low. Therefore, it is recommended that science and communication scholars include more science communication courses into their academic curricula, and get more deeply involved in public and citizen science, media science, and virtual/online science communication efforts. These steps, it is believed, would help advance science communication in Nigeria.

Abstract

Empowerment is one of the popular concepts in the field of social science and community development. In Indonesia, the word empowerment started to be used in 1998. Recently many empowerment projects were implemented in Indonesia but most of them failed to achieve their goals. The question is, then, what causes empowerment programs to fail? Many factors lead to the program fail, however in this paper, the focus of discussion will be the power of communication in empowerment processes. Empowerment is a process where individuals, groups and communities may obtain control over their lives. The empowerment process is an effort to reduce powerlessness by equipping people with self-awareness, self-competence, self-confidence, self-determination and perceived access to. To accelerate these effort, communication plays important roles. Communication is simply the act of transferring information from one person or group to another. Similar to empowerment: the process to transfer power from one person or organisation to others. Through effective communication people feel more empowered, developed a sense of belonging and responsibility. Most importantly, when the the communication process are open, people feel more comfortable with the relationship developed by change agent. As a result, they have feeling being empowered. The powering process. Consists of two mirror-image that show dialectical processes such as empowering and overpowering (disempowering). The process will undergo empowering when the change agent communicates clearly, honestly, caring, caring, valuing, respecting others and affirming, enhancing, and growing; these will lead to people being free, having self-control and independence and will become overpowering/disempowering if communication is unclear with distortion, objectifying, devaluing, diminishing, negating, constricting and subsuming these will lead to a feeling of being controlled, dominated and make them dependence.

Abstract

Media and democracy are involved in a social contract, which has implications for one another. The emergence of alternative media is a breath of fresh air that provides an opportunity for the community to revive public space through public discussion and create a well-informed society regarding their rights in a democracy. Through literature review and digital observation, this paper attempts to describe the position of alternative media journalism practices based on Strömbäck's democratic normative model. WatchdoC Documentary as an alternative media implements a form of participatory democracy practice by using 'marginalized' sources, reaching out to issues that are rarely raised by the mainstream media, and placing citizens as active subjects and aware of the issues.
