Abstract

National education aims to produce dedicated, religious, moral individuals and cognitive intelligence. Applying students’ Islamic values through integrating Islam and science in science learning is one of the strategies that can be used to achieve these goals. Integrating Islam and science in science learning can direct the formation of knowledge about science concepts and improve students’ attitudes and spiritual skills. This study aims to analyze the effect of integrating Islam and science in science learning. This study explores the effect of integrating Islam and science in science learning with meta-analysis research by calculating effect size (ES). Research data were obtained from 38 studies from national and international journals. The results showed that integrating Islam and science in science learning has a significant impact, as seen from the ES of 0.658. It is explained that science learning integrating Islam and science can be an alternative learning method. Integrating Islam and science into science learning is an alternative educational method to achieve national education goals that can increase students’ intellectual and spiritual values. The results of this study can be utilized as a reference in the learning process and the development of teaching materials in science learning in the future.

Abstract

University students in early adulthood indeed encounter diverse developmental demands, particularly in the realm of relationships and social development. This stage often involves considerations related to establishing families and entering into marriage or long-term partnerships. This study aims to assess the efficacy of a premarital counseling program grounded in the Adlerian approach in enhancing intimacy and social interest among a sample of single university students. The sample comprised 718 single young individuals from a public university in Jordan. Among them, 38 students displaying low social interest and experiencing fear of intimacy voluntarily participated. They were divided into two groups: an experimental group of 19 participants and a control group of 19 participants. The study utilized two measurement scales-one for fear of intimacy and another for social interest. The group counseling program, consisting of 11 sessions, was administered. The findings revealed significant differences between the experimental and control groups in pre- and post-measurements, indicating the positive impact of the group counseling program on the experimental group. Additionally, follow-up assessments indicated that the beneficial effects of the group counseling program were sustained over time.

Abstract

Complementing science subjects with spirituality components is almost universal and is a significant requirement in religion-based schools. However, integrating spiritual components into science classes is challenging, particularly in inquiry-based problem-solving tasks. In this experiment, we modified inquiry learning and contextual teaching. We tested the efficacy of a combined model called the socio-science spirituality (3S) model on students’ spirituality and science process skills (SPS). Through a quasi-experiment, this learning model was applied in classes addressing the digestive system, additives and addictive chemicals, and the circulatory system. Following the 3S classroom implementation, we compared the mean pre- and post-test scores of the experimental and control groups using the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) test and then assessed the relationship between spirituality and SPS in the classrooms using the Pearson-correlation test. The research found that spirituality and SPS were much higher and more prevalent in the experimental group compared to the control group. In the experimental class, there was also a link between spirituality and SPS. Theoretically, this research finding contributes to spiritual education and the development of SPS skills in science classes simultaneously. This research provides a unique way to prioritize the integration of spirituality in science learning. Practically, the research explain the details of the implementation of spirituality that can be applied to inquiry activities in science classes through the 3S model.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the factors that influence the mathematics achievement of grade 4 students in Indonesia at the student and school level using Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2015 data. Sample in this study were all grade 4 students in Indonesia who participated in TIMSS 2015. There are 4,025 students from 230 schools. The TIMSS 2015 data used in this study was analyzed using a multilevel model (MLM) using the R package ‘lme4’ software. The results of this study indicate that i) the school visited by each student accounts for the majority of the variance in the mathematics achievement of Indonesian grade 4 students (51%); ii) factors related to students’ self-construction of mathematics such as attitude-toward mathematics (ATM) and self-concept and factors related to schools such as socioeconomic status (SES) school, self-concept school, school readiness, general school resources, and teacher education level was found to influence students’ mathematics achievement positively and significantly, where self-concept school was the strongest predictor compared to other predictors; and iii) variables at the student and school level explain 35% of the total variance in Indonesian grade 4 students’ mathematics achievement.

Abstract

This study examines the development of an Arduino-based real-time data acquisition system and its effect on secondary students’ STEM career interest (STEM-CIS). A total of 74 students were sampled from a prestigious private school in Jakarta, Indonesia, and a learning device was developed using the A.D.D.I.E. method. A one-group pretest-posttest research design was used to evaluate the effect of using the device during blended classroom activities. Data were collected through surveys using the STEM-CIS instrument and interviews. The study was based on the general practice of using Arduino software and hardware for practical purposes in Chemistry Laboratories and Sick Bay. The setup was successfully used in these different environments as a temperature monitoring system to record thermochemistry data and monitor a patient’s body temperature. The findings are consistent with prior research indicating that hands-on robotics activities can increase STEM interest and inspire students to pursue STEM careers. The results suggest that strong engagement in this activity facilitated the development of digital literacy and STEM skills. The STEM-CIS score at the 5% significance level was significantly increased after the experimentation with the device, with a paired t-test result of p<0.001. The effect size (Cohen’s d) showed a moderate effect of 0.74.

Abstract

No qualms, international student mobility has become a source of income for countries around the world. International students become more mobile, contributing to the university’s growth and diversity. It has also created competition by making higher institutions around the world develop strategies to attract them. This study explores the factors that lead to satisfaction among international students and the item indicator. This study is quantitative in nature, using a survey to collect the data. The population consists of international students from Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America at the leading Islamic universities in Malaysia. A total of 211 international students participated in the study. Ruffola Noel Levitz’s student satisfaction inventory, 2017 was used as an instrument, and a measurement model from SEM was applied to analyze the data. From the measurement model results, student-centeredness was ranked as the leading factor influencing international student satisfaction; followed instructional effectiveness. The main prediction or leading factor to improve international student satisfaction is to ensure international students’ positive feelings of self-belonging in Islamic universities in Malaysia. Improving instruction and service are also suggested to meet international student expectations and satisfaction. However, there is a scarcity of research conducted or published about Islamic universities worldwide, making Islamic universities neglected and difficult to find literature about.

Abstract

To be certified as professional English teachers, Indonesian teachers must complete the teacher profession education program (TPEP) offered by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia. Due to a lack of discussion and research on the motivation of inservice English teachers participating in the TPEP, this study explored the TPEP-related motivation of in-service English teachers. There were 80 inservice English teachers who joined the TPEP at a reputable private university in Indonesia participated in this mixed-method study. A survey questionnaire was distributed to the in-service teachers to know their motivation regarding the TPEP. The findings indicated that the majority of the in-service English teachers were highly motivated to participate in the TPEP. They also thought that TPEP was beneficial for teachers as it enhanced their knowledge and skills in teaching. Through the TPEP they learned to use innovative strategies to teach English such as project-based learning and problem-based learning. This implies that more in-service English teachers should be encouraged to join TPEP to develop their competencies.

Abstract

Graduate tracer studies are essential for higher education institutions (HEIs) as valuable information can be uncovered and derived that is useful for curriculum development, revision, or enhancement. This descriptive research study, using a questionnaire as the main data-gathering tool, determined the job attributes and job performance of the Bachelor of Science (BS) Mathematics graduates from 2013 to 2017 from a state university in the Philippines. Results revealed that the graduates were currently employed in various positions in both private and government institutions, with either permanent or contractual status. The graduates identified skills in mathematics, communication, computer, human relations, entrepreneurship, problem- solving, and critical thinking as vital in performing their duties and obligations in the workplace. Overall, the graduates’ job performance is outstanding. Based on the findings, suggestions to improve the BS Mathematics curriculum of the concerned HEIs were discussed to make it more relevant, responsive, adaptive, and inclusive.

Abstract

Mathematics is a fundamental subject with wide-reaching importance in education, providing students with the tools to apply mathematical principles in diverse contexts. This study examines the abilities of 60 pre-service mathematics teachers (PSTs) in identifying content and context within mathematical word problems. Utilizing a case study approach, the study employed the mathematics word problems test and the content and context questionnaire. The findings reveal that PSTs generally struggle with error detection and content comprehension in mathematical word problems, as demonstrated by their inability to recognize inaccuracies in two of three test questions. The failure of PSTs to identify errors in mathematical word problems often stems from their tendency to rely solely on the solutions they obtain, without first understanding the entire question presented. In essence, they may focus on finding a solution rather than critically evaluating the problem, which can lead to the oversight of errors or inaccuracies within the problem statement itself. This study emphasizes the need for PSTs to grasp mathematical concepts and contextualize them in everyday life scenarios. Challenges were observed in linking computational results to real-world contexts. Thus, the study calls for future research in pre-service teacher education to explore strategies for enhancing critical thinking, error detection, and the integration of practical context in mathematical problem-solving. Furthermore, the study suggests that assessing the ability of PSTs to formulate problem-solving questions evaluates their capacity to answer questions and their ability to construct questions that can enhance students’ cognitive abilities.

Abstract

The integration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) with project-based learning is beneficial in facilitating students to compete effectively in the 21st century, but teachers still encounter obstacles, so in implementation, especially in primary schools, is still rarely done. Therefore, it is necessary to develop STEM project-based learning module to overcome teacher problems. This study aims to collect and analyze teacher perspectives regarding their requirements for the development of STEM project-based learning module. This study was conducted using a design and developmental research (DDR) approach. The first phase included need analysis, carried out through an online questionnaire. The participants consisted of 397 teachers in Cirebon and the results showed that primary school teachers required STEM project-based learning module to facilitate the development of relevant skills in the 21st century, such as scientific literacy and critical thinking. Based on the data collected, the most difficult topic and the topic with the highest forms of misconceptions appeared to be human body organ systems, with a percentage value of 21.16% and matter and change, with a percentage at 21.41%. STEM project-based learning module for primary school level can be developed for various topics such as human body organs or matter and changes.
