Abstract

Language plays a fundamental role in human interaction as a medium for conveying ideas and information, and its comparative study is addressed within contrastive linguistics. This study investigates the similarities and differences in vocabulary between Indonesian and Malaysian Malay as represented in the series Melur untuk Firdaus Season 2 Episode One, addressing how lexical variations reflect linguistic and cultural distinctions. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected using listening and note-taking techniques, including the derivative free listening technique with involved speaking. Data analysis was conducted using the matching and distributional methods, while findings were presented informally. The results reveal 25 instances of Indonesian vocabulary (BBMS) and 6 instances of Malaysian Malay vocabulary (BBMB), highlighting both shared lexical roots and distinctive variations influenced by sociocultural contexts. The study argues that despite structural and historical proximity, the two languages exhibit meaningful lexical divergences that shape comprehension and communication. These findings contribute to the enrichment of contrastive linguistic studies and provide insights into cross-linguistic understanding in media contexts.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital media, particularly Instagram, has facilitated the proliferation of humorous discourse that frequently exploits linguistic ambiguity to produce comedic effects, posing interpretive challenges for students as active social media users. This study investigates the forms of lexical and grammatical ambiguity in humorous discourse on the Instagram accounts Dagelan and Nanangsptra and examines their potential as instructional materials for anecdotal texts in senior high schools. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through reading, observing, and note-taking techniques from posts published between February and April 2025, and analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that lexical ambiguity manifests in polysemy and homonymy, while grammatical ambiguity arises from word-formation processes and structurally similar phrases. These patterns indicate that digital humor discourse provides authentic and contextually relevant linguistic input. The study argues that integrating such materials into classroom instruction enhances students’ interpretive competence, language awareness, and critical thinking in understanding anecdotal texts.

Abstract

This study aims to uncover the construction of meaning, ideological values, and social relations in Denny Sumargo’s podcast entitled “Mukjizat Tuhan, Terlahir Kembar Siam Dewi dan Putri Tidak Mau Dipisahkan.” The selection of this object is grounded in its rich humanitarian discourse and spiritual values that reflect broader social and cultural dimensions. The study addresses how meaning and ideology are constructed through discourse and how these elements shape social perceptions. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques and analyzed using Teun A. Van Dijk’s three-dimensional framework: text structure, social cognition, and social context. The findings reveal that diction, stylistic features, and narrative structures consistently construct an image of a religious, compassionate, and resilient family facing limitations. The podcast functions as a medium for conveying moral and spiritual messages, shaping public opinion and fostering social awareness through empathetic and reflective narratives. These results demonstrate that discourse in digital media plays a significant role in constructing meaning and influencing societal values.

Abstract

This study is situated within the growing need to integrate film-based media into literary learning by examining how semiotic signs and moral values are represented and pedagogically utilized. It addresses the research problem of how Roland Barthes’ semiotic elements—denotation, connotation, and myth—along with moral values are constructed in the film 2nd Miracle in Cell No. 7 by Herwin Novianto and how these elements can be applied as teaching materials in senior high school. Employing a qualitative approach with a descriptive method, the study analyzes scenes and dialogues through observation and documentation techniques, using Barthes’ semiotic framework and Wicaksono’s moral value categories, including human relations with God, self, others, and the universe. Data were analyzed through reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the film presents layered meanings through semiotic structures and conveys diverse moral values that are relevant to students’ social and emotional development. The study argues that these findings support the use of the film as an effective and contextual teaching resource for Grade XI students, particularly in learning critical response texts, as it enhances interpretive skills and moral awareness.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the meaning and narrative structure of the short story Serpihan yang Terbuang by Tin Miswary through Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach. The research addresses how signs—icons, indices, and symbols—construct semiosis in representing traumatic experiences, memory, and collective history. The narrative centers on Amad Bh’eng, a scavenger who preserves ordinary objects as repositories of personal and social memory, including the loss of family and past life experiences. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with textual analysis, the study identifies icons through sensory representations such as visual imagery, sound, and smell; indices through causal relationships between objects and the character’s memories; and symbols through objects that embody emotional and historical meanings. The findings demonstrate that the story’s meaning emerges from the dynamic interaction between sign, object, and interpretant, whereby mundane objects function as powerful markers of life, trauma, and collective memory. This study contributes a novel perspective by applying Peirce’s semiotic framework to contemporary short fiction, an approach that remains relatively underexplored.

Abstract

This study examines the syntactic structure of phatic expressions across local languages in Indonesia, with particular emphasis on the Galela language and several regional dialects in North Maluku. The research addresses how phatic elements are structurally realized and function pragmatically in maintaining social interaction and cohesion among speakers. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through informal interviews, field notes, audio recordings, and systematic verification to ensure analytical reliability. The findings reveal that phatic expressions occur in the form of particles, single words, phrases, and clauses, with variations shaped by local cultural contexts and dialectal differences. Specific phatic particles such as bai, to, si, and ka function as semantic intensifiers, pragmatic softeners, and markers of social proximity within discourse. The study argues that the syntactic and pragmatic integration of phatic elements reflects broader socio-cultural norms embedded in language use. These results contribute to descriptive syntax and pragmatics while providing a foundation for the development of culturally responsive local language learning materials that promote effective and harmonious communication.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the mythical structure embedded in the short story Pengorbanan Sulung by Bagus Sulistio through Claude Lévi-Strauss’s structuralist framework. The research addresses how mythemes, binary oppositions, and myth transformations construct the narrative plot and generate meaning. The story portrays a family bound by a supernatural covenant that requires the sacrifice of the firstborn before reaching the age of twenty, reflecting a tension between human agency and metaphysical determinism. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method with textual analysis, identifying key mythemes such as covenantal birth and sacrificial obligation, as well as binary oppositions including firstborn versus youngest, human versus jinn, and compassion versus injustice. The findings reveal that the narrative structure is shaped by a network of relational meanings, in which significance emerges from the interplay between structural elements rather than isolated units. Myth transformation is evident as a realistic family conflict evolves into a mystical revelation concerning the destiny of the firstborn. This study contributes a novel perspective by applying Lévi-Strauss’s structuralism to contemporary short fiction, particularly within the intersection of familial and mystical themes.

Abstract

This study examines syntactic interference in the Indonesian language as used by speakers of the Dani ethnic group in Papua, a phenomenon arising from the interaction between regional language systems and standard Indonesian. The research addresses how differences in syntactic structures manifest when Dani speakers employ Indonesian in everyday communication. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through documentary observation, literature review, and note-taking techniques, as well as attentive listening to language use across various media, including digital video platforms. The findings reveal several forms of syntactic interference, including deviations in sentence structure patterns, the addition of sentence elements, and the incorporation of local phatic expressions within Indonesian utterances. These patterns indicate that the Dani language exerts a significant influence on the syntactic realization of Indonesian among its speakers. The study argues that such interference reflects not only linguistic transfer but also the persistence of cultural and communicative norms embedded in local languages. These findings contribute to the field of sociolinguistics and syntax, particularly in understanding bilingual language behavior and its implications for language learning and policy.

Abstract

This study addresses the persistent challenges faced by junior secondary school students in producing coherent narrative texts, which are closely associated with their mastery of vocabulary and grammatical competence in Indonesian. The research investigates the extent to which vocabulary mastery and Indonesian grammar proficiency are related to students’ narrative writing ability among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 5 Kota Serang. Employing a correlational research design, the study utilizes descriptive statistical analysis, prerequisite testing, and hypothesis testing to examine the relationships among variables. The findings reveal significant positive correlations between vocabulary mastery and narrative writing ability (r = 0.587 > 0.242), as well as between grammar mastery and narrative writing ability (r = 0.661 > 0.242). Furthermore, the combined contribution of vocabulary and grammar mastery to students’ narrative writing ability is substantial, with a coefficient of determination of 0.537, indicating that both variables jointly explain a considerable proportion of variance in writing performance. These results demonstrate that linguistic competence, particularly in vocabulary and grammar, plays a critical role in shaping students’ ability to construct effective narrative texts, reinforcing the argument that integrated language instruction is essential for improving writing outcomes.
