Abstract

Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs) are still a serious problem in patient safety with a high prevalence in various countries, including Indonesia. The role of the Infection Prevention and Control Nurse (IPCN) is very strategic in supporting the implementation of the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) program in hospitals. This study aims to explore in depth the experience of IPCN in preventing and controlling infections in hospitals. Qualitative research with an exploratory descriptive design was conducted in several hospitals in Indonesia involving ten IPCNs selected based on inclusion criteria. Data was collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews, then analyzed using a thematic analysis approach according to Braun and Clarke. The results of the research produced four main themes, namely the journey and motivation to become an IPCN, the implementation of comprehensive duties and responsibilities, challenges and memorable experiences in carrying out roles, and expectations for future work optimization. The findings show that IPCN plays a multidimensional role in education, surveillance, compliance audits, cross-unit coordination, and crisis management during the COVID-19 pandemic, despite facing limited resources and negative perceptions from some health workers. The role of IPCN has not touched the clinical area in nursing care in nursing units. This study concludes that the role of IPCN is very important in improving patient safety and lowering the number of HAIs. The recommendations are directed at strengthening managerial support, providing adequate facilities, clearer assignment of duties and responsibilities both as functional and managerial nurses in the IPC team, improving competencies through continuous training, and strengthening information systems to support the effectiveness of IPC.

Abstract

The increasing number of hypertension cases is caused by non-compliance with hypertension treatment. This occurs due to a lack of self-awareness. If this is left untreated, it can have an impact on the incidence of hypertension, which can lead to complications such as heart failure, stroke, and kidney failure. So it can impact the economic and social burden of the community on the treatment phase and loss of community productivity. This study aims to analyze the relationship between self-awareness and adherence to hypertension treatment in the community. The research design used correlation analysis with a cross-sectional approach. The independent variable is self-awareness, and the dependent variable is medication adherence. This study was conducted in a village in Kudus Regency, which is a hypertension locus, in 2025. The research sample of 80 hypertension clients was selected through a total sampling technique based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The research instrument used the MAAS (Mindfulness Attention Awareness) questionnaire to measure self-awareness and the MMAS-8 (Morisky Medication Adherence Scale) to measure medication adherence. Data analysis used the chi-square test. The results showed a statistically significant relationship between self-awareness and medication adherence with a p-value = 0.03 (p < 0.05). Self-awareness affects medication adherence in hypertension clients in the community. There is a need for strategic interventions to improve medication adherence by increasing public awareness of the importance of hypertension management in the community.

Abstract

FoMO, anxiety, and social acceptance represent important psychosocial aspects of adolescent development in the context of intensive digital media use. This study examined the association of FoMO with anxiety levels and social acceptance among adolescents. An analytical quantitative cross-sectional design was applied to 356 students from SMA Negeri 62, SMA Negeri 51, and SMA Negeri 58 East Jakarta selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected using the Fear of Missing Out Scale-12, Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, and Adolescent Multidimensional Social Competence Questionnaire. Associations were tested with Pearson’s Chi-square. Most participants reported moderate-to-high FoMO (93.3%), while 51.4% were classified as having severe anxiety to panic levels. FoMO was significantly associated with anxiety (χ² = 12.432; p < 0.001), whereas its association with social acceptance was not statistically significant (χ² = 1.756; p = 0.185). These findings indicate that FoMO is associated with anxiety levels but does not show a significant association with social acceptance in the studied adolescents.

Abstract

Surgery is a medical procedure that uses invasive procedures. Invasive procedures in children make children more susceptible to anxiety, especially before surgery. This study aims to determine the correlation between therapeutic communication and preoperative anxiety in children. The design used in this study is a cross-sectional correlation. The population in this study were all parents of patients in the pediatric ward from November 2025 to February 2026 and the number of research samples was 61 respondents, determined using a purposive sampling technique. Data collection instruments used were a therapeutic communication questionnaire and the Modified Spence Children's Anxiety Scale - Parent version. The results obtained were that almost all respondents who stated that the nurse's therapeutic communication was in the good category, then the child experienced moderate anxiety, namely 50 respondents (81.9%). Based on the results of the Spearman rank rho analysis test, p value = 0.000 < α = 0.05 was obtained, so H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted, meaning there is a relationship between therapeutic communication and preoperative anxiety in children. There was a strong negative relationship between nurses’ therapeutic communication and preoperative anxiety in children, indicating that better therapeutic communication was associated with lower levels of anxiety in children.

Abstract

The imposition of sanctions on nurses is intended to increase their work motivation so that they can perform at their maximum capacity while working. Sanctions are given to nurses who commit mistakes and violations, with the aim of motivating them to stop deviant behavior and directing them towards positive conduct. Sanctions serve to discipline nurses in carrying out their duties. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between sanctions and nurses’ work motivation at Sari Mutiara Lubuk Pakam General Hospital. This study employed a quantitative research design. The research method used was an analytical correlation with a cross-sectional approach. The population of this study consisted of all nurses working at Sari Mutiara Lubuk Pakam General Hospital, totaling 31 individuals who had completed mass training. The research instrument utilized was a questionnaire. The study findings indicated that sanctions for nurses were in the doubtful category at 41.4%, and nurses’ work motivation was in the fairly good category at 41.9%. Based on the statistical test results, the Spearman Rank correlation yielded a p-value = 0.000 (p<0.05), which means that there is a relationship between sanctions and nurses’ work motivation with a correlation coefficient of 0.491, indicating a moderate correlation. It can thus be concluded that sanctions significantly influence nurses’ work motivation in order to prevent mistakes and improve discipline in performing their duties.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are major non-communicable diseases with increasing prevalence worldwide. Diabetes is one of the leading risk factors for CKD; However, epidemiological evidence describing the characteristics of both diseases at the regional healthcare level remains limited. This study aimed to describe the epidemiological characteristics of patients with DM and CKD at Konawe Selatan Regional General Hospital, Indonesia. A descriptive quantitative study was conducted using a descriptive epidemiological approach based on person, place, and time. Secondary data were obtained from patients' medical records. Variables included sex, age, occupation, ethnicity, and time of hospital visits. Data were analyzed descriptively and presented as frequencies and percentages. Female patients accounted for the majority of DM cases (54%), whereas CKD was more common among males (54%). The most affected age groups were 40–59 years for DM (43%) and ≥63 years for CKD (37%). Housewives represented the largest occupational group among patients with DM (40%), while farmers predominated among CKD patients (43%). The Bugis ethnic group constituted the largest proportion of both DM (34%) and CKD (37%) cases. The highest number of DM visits occurred in December (14.3%), whereas CKD visits peaked in August (14.3%); the lowest number of cases for both diseases was recorded in November (2.9%). DM and CKD predominantly affected middle-aged and older adults with distinct sociodemographic characteristics. These findings highlight the importance of early detection, health education, and community-based risk factor management to reduce disease progression and improve health outcomes.

Abstract

Hyperuricemia is a condition characterized by elevated uric acid levels in the blood, which may lead to joint pain and impaired mobility. This condition is commonly observed among older adults and contributes to a decline in quality of life. Limited knowledge and suboptimal health management may further exacerbate the condition and increase the risk of complications. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of gerontological nursing care in reducing pain intensity and improving mobility among patients with hyperuricemia at the Elderly Clinic of Lepo-Lepo Health Center, Kendari City. This study employed a descriptive design using a case study approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, physical examinations, and document reviews. The findings demonstrated a reduction in pain intensity from 7/10 to 3/10 following nursing interventions. Additionally, there was an improvement in mobility, as indicated by the patient’s ability to ambulate independently, albeit with some limitations. Gerontological nursing care was effective in reducing pain and improving patient mobility. However, the intervention was not sufficient to fully resolve all clinical issues, particularly those related to peripheral perfusion, indicating the need for further comprehensive interventions.

Abstract

Peripheral diabetic neuropathy is a common chronic complication of diabetes mellitus that can reduce patients’ quality of life. Cardiovascular disease and glycemic control are considered contributing factors to this condition. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between cardiovascular disease and glycemic control with the occurrence of peripheral diabetic neuropathy in patients with diabetes mellitus at Tarakan General Hospital, Jakarta. An observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted involving 96 patients who met the inclusion criteria. Data were analyzed using Fisher’s Exact test for cardiovascular disease and Chi-Square test for glycemic control variables. The results showed no statistically significant association between cardiovascular disease and peripheral diabetic neuropathy (p = 0.124). In contrast, glycemic control was significantly associated with peripheral diabetic neuropathy based on HbA1c (p < 0.001) and 2-hour postprandial blood glucose levels, while fasting blood glucose showed no significant association. Patients with uncontrolled glycemic control had a higher proportion of peripheral diabetic neuropathy.

Abstract

Gorontalo is facing a double burden of malnutrition, characterized by the coexistence of undernutrition and overnutrition. Amid increasing gadget use among children, traditional games can serve as an enjoyable alternative for developmental stimulation. Illustrated engklek, a traditional hopscotch game, not only provides a play experience but can also stimulate aspects of child development, particularly gross motor and emotional skills. This study aimed to analyze the effect of illustrated engklek stimulation on gross motor and emotional development among preschool children. A quasi-experimental design was used, involving 30 preschool children at TK ABA Gorontalo who were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through structured observation using an assessment sheet based on the Standards for the Achievement of Child Development (STPPA). The assessment included four indicators for each domain of gross motor and emotional development, using a 1–4 Likert scale. The Wilcoxon test showed a significant effect of illustrated engklek play on gross motor and emotional development at a 95% confidence level. In conclusion, illustrated engklek play affects gross motor and emotional development in preschool children. Nurses can educate families about traditional games as developmental stimulation, while parents are encouraged to limit gadget use and promote active play, such as illustrated engklek.

Abstract

Sleep quality among nurses is an important aspect of patient safety, quality of care, and nursing workforce well-being, particularly among nurses working night shifts. This activity aimed to analyze the strategic role of nursing management in optimizing nurses’ sleep quality through the development of a strategic napping program in the inpatient wards of Hospital X. The activity used a case report approach based on nursing management practices and was conducted from April 21 to May 21, 2026. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with five Nurse Unit Managers (NUMs), workplace observations, and a researcher-developed assessment questionnaire administered to inpatient nurses. The questionnaire was developed to assess nursing management functions and the need for a strategic napping program. A total of 18 nurses participated from a population of 146 nurses across five inpatient wards. Data were analyzed descriptively and further examined using SWOT and fishbone analyses. The findings showed that 72.2% of respondents perceived nursing management functions supporting sleep quality as less effective, while all respondents reported a need for a strategic napping program. The main challenges included high workload, an imbalance in the nurse-to-patient ratio, limited rest time and facilities, and suboptimal fatigue management. The program was developed using Kotter’s Eight-Step Change Model, with interventions including sleep hygiene education, scheduled rest periods, and strengthened nursing management roles. Initial evaluation indicated staff acceptance and participation in the program, providing a foundation for continued development of sustainable fatigue management.
