Abstract

Education plays a strategic role in empowering communities to achieve a more advanced and competitive quality of life. However, indigenous communities are often perceived as being less receptive to formal education, particularly at the higher education level. This study aims to analyze the forms of openness among indigenous communities toward higher education and to explore how traditional cultural values are maintained throughout this process. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using the field trip method. Data were collected through field observations and in-depth interviews with four informants, consisting of indigenous leaders and community representatives. The data were analyzed interactively through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing by relating the field findings to relevant theories and previous studies. The findings identified five major themes: (1) the reinforcement of traditional values in children's education; (2) aspirations to pursue higher education; (3) education does not diminish cultural identity; (4) the adaptation of education to support cultural preservation; and (5) economic factors as the primary barrier to educational access. The study concludes that indigenous communities' openness toward education represents a form of adaptation that remains firmly rooted in cultural values. The findings further imply that local wisdom-based education can serve as an effective strategy for expanding educational access while strengthening cultural preservation, providing a valuable reference for developing educational policies and practices that are more contextual, inclusive, and sustainable.

Abstract

Contemporary elementary education continues to face complex challenges in internalizing multicultural values, as reflected in the persistence of social segregation and value dissonance that foster self-grouping behaviors among students. This study aims to describe the practical challenges encountered by teachers and to analyze the pedagogical solutions implemented in managing multicultural classroom dynamics. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design, the study involved 11 participants consisting of 10 teachers and one school principal. Data were collected through non-participant observation and open-ended questionnaires, and subsequently analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings highlight two primary challenges: value dissonance between school and family environments and naturally occurring social segregation that encourages student exclusivity. To address these challenges, teachers implemented holistic pedagogical strategies, including STEM-integrated Project-Based Learning (PjBL), the use of immersive technologies (AR/IFP), and social engineering approaches to promote student group integration. The study concludes that the integration of digital innovation, structured classroom management, and role modeling grounded in local cultural wisdom collectively contributes to the effective development of diversity-oriented character education. The implications of this study underscore the need to reconceptualize character education through the integration of culturally grounded visual role modeling and emphasize the dual role of teachers as moral exemplars and technologically adaptive learning facilitators in fostering inclusive and contextualized learning environments.
