Abstract

Writing in English requires a good mastery of structure and composition. Therefore, students must master the essential elements of writing. This classroom action research aimed to improve seventh-grade students' writing skills at SMPN 3 Ubud using the Simultaneous Roundtable technique combined with pictures. A post-test is given at the end of each cycle to collect the necessary data. Initial observations on seventh-grade students showed that their writing skills needed improvement by combining Simultaneous Roundtables with pictures. The post-tests I and II results significantly increased subject and category writing abilities. The pre-test results were 39.44, post-test I  were 60.65, and post-test II were 71.34. The researcher gave a questionnaire at the end of the session, and the results showed an improvement in students' writing skills. The percentage of the strongly agreed questionnaire shows that 53 % of subjects strongly agree. 43 % of subjects agreed, 4 % of subjects were unsure, 0% of subjects disagreed, and 0 % strongly disagreed. In conclusion, this classroom action research proves that the writing skills of seventh graders can be improved through simultaneous roundtables with pictures.

Abstract

This study examines the verbal and non-verbal intercultural communication challenges faced by R, an Indonesian exchange student at UC Davis, and explores the strategies he used to overcome them. Employing a narrative inquiry methodology, the research focuses on R’s lived experiences and investigates how these strategies fostered his intercultural communication competence. The findings reveal that R encountered difficulties related to language diversity, differing communication styles, evolving English language usage, and non-verbal cues such as cultural norms and contextual differences. To address these challenges, he utilized strategies including maintaining language fluency, employing visual aids, and adopting alternative communication methods. These approaches enabled him to navigate communication barriers effectively while fostering cultural adaptability and a deeper understanding of cross-cultural nuances. R’s experiences highlight the significance of adaptive strategies in managing personal space, maintaining mindfulness, and engaging actively in intercultural interactions. The study underscores the importance of these skills in enhancing practical communication abilities and navigating the complexities of intercultural environments. These insights contribute to a broader understanding of how exchange students develop competence in diverse cultural settings, providing valuable implications for educators and program coordinators in supporting intercultural learning.

Abstract

With an emphasis on the educational process in the setting of higher education, this research investigates the constructivist philosophy in the application of the student-centered learning (SCL) approach and the advantages and difficulties of applying constructivist theory to the SCL approach. This study applied a descriptive qualitative study. This study uses classroom observations and interviews conducted in a variety of teaching situations at a private institution in Bandung, Indonesia. According to the results, the majority of the teaching and learning process incorporates elements of constructivist philosophy, particularly the role of the lecturer, learner autonomy, active and collaborative learning, technology usage, assessment approachs, and knowledge production. It encourages more critical thinking, guided interactive learning experiences, and generally improves students’ engagement. The value of this research lies in the development and enhancement discourse on pedagogical approaches at higher education level, especially for an Indonesian situation where it may provide a significant approach to develop learning from constructivist perspective. However, the implementation of SCL faces several challenges, including differences in students’ readiness for self-directed learning directions and resistance to conventional pedagogy from some lecturers.

Abstract

Writing an academic essay might be challenging for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. As a response, the researcher is interested in investigating EFL university students' perspectives on using Artificial Intelligence technology to help them improve their academic essays. To achieve the research goal, the researcher first did a literature review analysis on seventeen articles published in national and international journals. After the review analysis, the researcher interviewed five participants who are now or have taken academic essay writing classes in batch 2021 or 2022 to discuss the results of the literature review analysis. This interview served as an insight into the experiences and perceptions of EFL students regarding the benefits and limitations of AI in academic writing. The data was qualitatively examined and presented as themes. The study results showed that the participants generally had positive perspectives when using AI technology. The study was expected to provide an overview of the benefits experienced by students and potential limitations of AI in essay writing, thus providing valuable insights for educators who wish to integrate AI in academic writing classes. The study concluded with recommendations for further research on the role of AI in EFL academic writing support.

Abstract

Reading logs are a promising tool for improving reading comprehension by fostering engagement, reflection, and metacognitive skills. This research investigates the effect of reading logs on students’ reading comprehension performance and their perceptions of its use at SMPN 3 Timpah during the 2024/2025 academic year. Focusing on rural education, it explores how reading logs support comprehension of narrative, descriptive, and procedural texts, aiming to enhance performance scores. A quantitative one-group pretest-posttest design was employed, using pretests and posttests to measure comprehension and a Likert-scale questionnaire for secondary data. The study involved 55 students from grades 7, 8, and 9. Data analysis included paired sample t-tests for performance and descriptive statistics for opinions. Results indicated significant improvement in comprehension, with p-values of 0.000 across all grades. Average scores rose from 47.1 to 62.9 in grade 7, 61.3 to 75.1 in grade 8, and 62.2 to 75.6 in grade 9. Students credited reading logs for helping identify key concepts, expand vocabulary, and enhance summarization and analysis skills. Favorable questionnaire responses highlighted the tool’s user-friendly, organized nature and its ability to boost motivation, engagement, and critical thinking. This study underscores reading logs’ potential as an effective EFL instructional strategy.

Abstract

Characters used expressive acts in movie to show feelings. This research analyzed expressive acts in Isn’t It Romantic. Data were from the utterances that have expressive acts. The researcher used data source Isn’t It romantic movie in this descriptive qualitative research. The research used observational method and non-participatory technique to collect data. Theory of expressive acts from Searle and Vanderveken was used to analyze data of this research. Pragmatic identity method and pragmatic competence-in equalizing was used to analyze data. The researchers found 83 data of expressive acts in the movie. 12 data from apologize, one data from deplore, 12 data from thank, nine data from greet, 26 data from complain, and 23 from compliment. The dominant was from complain because the main character, Natalie liked to complain about romantic comedy. She also became in a romantic comedy because everything weird and made she complained others and objects by expressive acts.

Abstract

This study examines negative politeness strategies in character dialogue, aiming to reveal how linguistic choices minimize face-threatening acts (FTAs) to maintain social harmony. Using Brown and Levinsons politeness theory, the analysis draws from a qualitative descriptive design, with data sourced from the movie Uglies and collected through observational, non-participatory methods, recorded via note-taking. A pragmatic identity method and equalizing technique were applied to analyze 216 instances of negative politeness, identifying “Question, Hedge” as the most frequent strategy (41 instances), reflecting a strong preference for indirectness to soften statements and avoid imposing on the listener. This was followed by “Be Pessimistic” and “Apologize” with 25 instances each, indicating that expressions of doubt and regret were also commonly used to mitigate imposition. Other strategies included “Minimize the Imposition” and “Give Deference” (24 instances each), “Be Conventionally Indirect” (20), “Go on Record as Incurring a Debt, or as Not Indebting” (18), “Impersonalize” and “State the FTA as a General Rule” (14 each), and “Nominalize” (11). The findings suggest a consistent preference for indirectness and deference to protect negative face, supporting respectful interactions and reinforcing social balance among characters.

Abstract

The integration of digital tools in teaching speaking skills has become essential in modern education, particularly in vocational schools in Indonesia. However, many English teachers in vocational schools, especially those in tourism, face challenges in utilizing advanced digital tools like CakeApp due to limited resources and inadequate training. This research aims to develop and evaluate CakeApp-based teaching infographics tailored for 11th-grade English teachers in the tourism sector at SMK Negeri 2 Tabanan. By employing the Design and Development (D&D) model, specifically the DDE framework, the research focuses on designing infographics that support speaking activities using CakeApp’s interactive features. The development process consists of needs analysis, content creation, and expert evaluations. The study shows that the developed infographics align with curriculum objectives and improve the teachers’ ability to deliver engaging speaking lessons. The quality evaluation results indicate that the infographics are of excellent quality, with high expert judgment scores and positive user feedback. This research contributes to the integration of digital tools in vocational education, enhancing speaking skills in a contextual and interactive manner.

Abstract

The linguistic landscape refers to the visibility and presence of languages in public spaces. The use of linguistic landscape in public spaces has patterns, roles, and functions. Language plays a vital role in human life because language is a means of communication in everyday life. This study aimed to describe the linguistic landscapes that appeared in public spaces qualitatively. The researcher collected the data through observations and photo documentation. The research data and information obtained showed that the linguistic landscape in Palangka Raya plays a crucial role. The use of English in Palangka Raya can be easily found in public spaces, whether in the form of words, phrases, and sentences, monolingual (English), bilingual (English-Indonesian), or multilingual. This research also reported that the roles of the linguistic landscape found in Palangka Raya are identity representation and social representation. As well as the function of the linguistic landscape itself, the result of this study showed that the function of the linguistic landscape in the public space of Palangka Raya is informative uses and interactive uses. The use of English in Palangka Raya occurs because English is associated with globalization, language and cultural transformation towards modernity, high fashion, and personal freedom.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of the DeepL as an alternative media for translating academic assignments of English language students. This study uses a qualitative-descriptive method,  obtained through observations, interviews, and documentation. The objects of this research were 6 English language students as active users of the DeepL application. The study results indicate that the DeepL application can significantly help students translate academic assignments faster, more accurately, and efficiently, although there are limitations in translating certain terms. In addition, the use of the DeepL application also affects students' understanding and abilities in the English context. This study concludes that DeepL is an effective tool to support and assist in translating students' academic assignments. Still, its use must be supported by a competent linguistic understanding to avoid translation errors.
