Abstract

This research aimed to describe students’ responses toward teaching reading comprehension of descriptive text using small group discussion. The research used descriptive qualitative. The sample of the research was seventh grade students of one of junior high school in cianjur. The data were obtained from interview and questionnaire. The data analyzed using qualitative descriptive. The result showed that the students’ responses toward teaching reading comprehension of descriptive texts is positive and effective. While, from the questionnaire showed that most students (80%) agree that learning descriptive texts used small group discussion becomes easy to understand the material or the texts, fun/interesting, and enthusiastically for sharing ideas with member of groups. Keywords:  Reading, Descriptive Text, Small Group Discussion

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to determine (1) the types of errors students made when translating phrasal verbs, (2) the frequency with which students made errors when translating phrasal verbs, and (3) the reasons of students' errors when translating phrasal verbs. The study used a qualitative case study approach and was conducted with second-semester students enrolled in the Islamic Education Program at a State Institute for Islamic Studies (Institut Agama Islam Negeri) in Central Java, Indonesia. The data sources were documents generated as a consequence of the exam and interview with the students. The author gathered data by doing an error analysis of students' test scores as provided by their lecturer. The obtained data were examined in steps that included collecting data, detecting mistakes, categorizing errors according to their categories, summarizing the errors for each category, and assessing the students' errors. Additionally, to ascertain the causes of students' mistakes, the researcher performed an interview with students who were purposefully chosen. According to the researcher's findings, students made two sorts of errors while translating phrasal verbs: errors in propositional meaning, which are incorrect alternate meanings for words, and errors in expressive meaning, which are incorrect translations of idiomatic expressions. Meanwhile, the interview findings indicated that the reasons for students' errors include a lack of understanding of what a phrasal verb is, a dislike for English, a lack of vocabularies, and a tendency to be lazy about learning more about English because they believe it is difficult.

Abstract

Reading is one of four skills that should be learned by the students to master a language because reading can give many information contained in the text to the reader. There are so many students who do not master in reading skill because of some factors such as lack of motivation and monotonous class activity. TGT method is part of cooperative learning that can help students to improve their reading skill. The objective of this research is to indentify the students’ responses toward TGT method in learning reading skill. The research uses descriptive qualitative design with 31 of seventh grade students as participants. The instruments of this research are questionnaire, interview and observation sheet. The result of data analysis shows that students give various responses toward TGT method, both positive and negative, such as TGT method helps them to be more active to participate in the class while the other students think that TGT method makes them confused. Keywords:  Teams Games Tournament (TGT), Students’ Responses

Abstract

This research is used descriptive qualitative method which aims to identify the types and the dominant used of code-mixing in selected episodes on Boy William YouTube channel. The data collected from the dialogues in 3 (three) episodes then identified and classified into types of code-mixing based on the theory of Hoffman (1991). Based on Hoffman (1991) there 3 (three) types of code-mixing, they are intra sentential, intra lexical and involving a change of pronunciation. The result showed that there are 61 intra sentential code-mixing (78%), 9 intra lexical (9%) and 8 involving a change of pronunciation (8%). So, it can be concluded that dominant code-mixing in 3 (three) episodes on Boy William YouTube Channel is intrasentential. Keywords:  Code-Mixing, Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Youtube

Abstract

The study was aimed at knowing how students’ perceptions of the use of video as medium of learning in speaking class. Qualitative descriptive was utilized as a research method. The researcher selected 15 students of English Education IAIN Palangka Raya from 3 classes which were chosen 5 students in each class by using purposive sampling. To gain the data, the researcher used interview and documentation. The result showed the students’ perceptions of the use of video as a medium of learning in speaking class had good result.  Most students said the use of video as a medium of learning in speaking class was effective, flexible, and practice medium. It was also able to increase the students’ speaking skill which was called positive attitude. However, two students disagreed the use of video which was called negative attitude. They mentioned video was ineffective in increasing speaking fluency and not too challenging. Keywords:  Students’ Perceptions, Video, Speaking Class

Abstract

Code-mixing is a study that learns about the understanding of mixing two codes or more languages that speakers or writers situation without changing the meaning of the sentence. The study purposes to find out code-mixing was used and to find out how many codes were used in the Interview. This research method applies descriptive qualitative. The data analysis of this research is Indonesian English code- mixing on Cinta Laura’s Graduation Interview. These data are taken from a spoken interview that was written in scripts. The result of this research data are analyzed using the linguistic form in code-mixing based on Suwito’s theory, it reveals that the linguistic forms which mostly used are: “Word” (7,32%), “Phrase” (2,75%), “Clause” (1,22%), and “Word Repetition” (0,31%). Keywords:  Code-mixing, Sociolinguistic, Linguistic Form

Abstract

This study was from the real phenomenon which showed that students were using google translate as media to improve their writing ability and learning motivation. The main problem was students’ lack of vocabulary and they wanted fast and instant translation. As a result, they preferred using google translate than doing their writing ability. The purpose of this research is to measure the correlation between students’ writing ability and learning motivation in google translate writing class of 2nd semester English education study program at IAIN Palangka Raya. This research was a correlational study using quantitative research method. Learning Motivation Questionnaire and Descriptive Text Writing Test were distributed to take the data from 58 student from 2nd semester in academic year 2020/2021 who took paragraph writing class. The sample was obtained through the use of the cluster random sampling technique. The result finding showed the calculation students’ writing ability and learning motivation was rvalue = 0.617 ≥ rtable = 0.258 and tvalue = 5.867118 ≥ ttable = 1.67252),  it meant that Ha accepted and Ho rejected. In this case students’ writing ability had high relationship or gave influence to learning motivation in google translate class. Keywords:  Correlation, Writing Ability, Learning Motivation, Google Translate

Abstract

This study reports a qualitative research micro ethnographic study on Secondary School Students Experience in Reciprocal Teaching Strategy on Reading Comprehension through the Flipped Classroom. One research question will guide this study: What is the students' experience in Reciprocal Teaching Strategy on Reading Comprehension through the Flipped Classroom? The participants of this study were five students of secondary school. This research was conducted at one of the secondary school in West Java, Indonesia. The data used this study are semi-structural interview techniques. The data analysis uses Thematic Analysis of Braun and Clarke (2006), which consists of 6 stages, namely the stage of familiarizing with the data, generating initial code, searching for themes, reviewing themes, defining and naming themes, and producing the report. The findings report that learning reading comprehension using reciprocal teaching strategies with the flipped classroom method can encourage students' interest in remembering and developing a new vocabulary that they do not know. Furthermore, learning reading comprehension using reciprocal teaching strategies with the flipped classroom method involves students learning collaboratively, expanding their reading skills.  Finally, the finding shows that learning reading comprehension using the reciprocal teaching strategy with the flipped classroom engages students in reading activities and this activities can help students understand recount texts. Keywords:  Reciprocal Teaching strategy, Reading Comprehension, The Flipped Classroom, Students Experience

Abstract

Speaking is an ability that is considered quite important in learning English. The oral presentation is one activity that can be used in learning English to improve students' speaking skills. This study aims to examine the oral presentations conducted by students with the intention that students can improve their speaking also seeks to determine what obstacles students experience when making oral presentations. The researcher applied qualitative research as a research method to collect the data the researcher used observation and field notes as instruments. The data obtained were categorized and analyzed based on several related theories. Regarding the result, it was found that basically, students have a positive response to the implementation of oral presentation. Student perceives that it helps them to evaluate their ability to speak English, increasing motivation, as well as allowing them to think critically in the use of language. Although several aspects must be developed such as student pronunciation. This finding indicates that oral presentations are useful for improving students speaking skills. Keywords:  Oral Presentation, Speaking Skill

Abstract

The use of website in learning Foreign Language helps the students feel comfortable to speak. The objectives of the research is to investigate the Indonesian students’ self-rated degrees of their foreign language speaking anxiety (FLSA) and the effect of using language exchange website in online learning in overcoming the students’ FLSA. This study examined 100 undergraduate students of 4th and 6th semester majoring English education. Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) by Horwitz, Horwitz & Cope (1986) was adapted and distributed twice in the beginning of the class to find the state of speaking anxiety and in the end to see whether there is any significance effect after learning speaking by using a language exchange website. Finally, the six participants were chosen for interview. The interview was conducted to get more data about the foreign language speaking anxiety that they feel. It is found that the number of students who felt anxiety decreases after using language exchange website. Keywords:  Foreign Language, Speaking Anxiety, Language Exchange Website
