Abstract

Pragmatic is a branch of linguistics which concentrates on language use. Speech acts are one of the learning domains under pragmatics. In this research, the researcher will find out the speech acts contained in the movie of Elemental:Forces of Nature. This research focus on the types of illocutionary acts that found in the utterances spoken by the film actors, namely declarative act, expressive act, directive act, commissive act and assertive act. The descriptive qualitative method was employed in this research. Data sources were obtained through observation and documentation. Researchers obtained data through watching the movie, reading the script, taking note of the utterances, classifying and identifying the types of illocutionary acts based on the data display. Researchers found there were 213 utterances that were included in the illocutionary types. The results found by the researchers were declaration types with 3%, expressive acts with 29%, directive acts with 34%, commissive acts with 7% and assertive acts with 27%. The dominant speect act in this movie is the directive act with a percentage of 34% and the least is the declarative act with 3%.

Abstract

This study aims to find students’ view towards the implementation of Artificial intelligence (AI) in learning speaking and its obstacles. Mixed method was used to conduct this research. the total population is 105 students. While, the sample of this study was thirty five students of English Education Department, Bengkulu University, Indonesia. It was just because only class C that the lecturer implemented Artificial intelligence application in public speaking class. Thus, the sampling technique was purposive sampling. Questionnaire and interview were addressed as instruments to answer the research questions. The questionnaire was addressed to thirty five students, while only fifteen students were interviewed. The data were analyzed quantitavely and qualitatively. For quantitative analysis, the data were analyzed by using simple calculation to know the percentage and mean score. For qualitative data analysis, coding was used for it. The result showed that students had positive responses towards the implementation of Artificial Intelligence in English speaking calss. However, few students faced several obstacles in applying in it when they spoke English. Those obstacles were poor internet connection, incomplete feature of the AI application, language skill and psychological problem. In short, AI applications can be as one of media for students in learning speaking because it helps them for speaking, even though, those still have limitation.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore student’s voices about using podcasts for their Speaking class project. The participants of this study were 18 students from the fifth semester of the English Education Department at a private university in Yogyakarta. The sampling technique applied is purposive sampling which is based on the specific purposes of this research. The study was conducted through a descriptive qualitative method. The data was collected through open-ended questionnaires to capture the students’ voices on the use of podcasts as a media to fulfill their final project in Speaking class. The results of this study showed that podcasts were effective to use as a media in Speaking class, especially to improve their speaking skills. However, students encountered various challenges, including such as difficulties with editing, fear of making mistakes, limited vocabulary, and pre-production tasks such as topic selection and content arrangement. Despite these challenges, integrating podcasts into Speaking class fostered a positive attitude toward technology adoption, boosted confidence, and enriched students' learning experience.

Abstract

This research presents a thorough examination of the English course book titled "Forward an English" by Erlangga, for Twelfth Grade Vocational School Students. The primary objective of the study was to assess the course book's content feasibility and presentation in accordance with the Education National Standard Council (BSNP) guidelines. The methodology applied in this research was content analysis. The findings of this research indicate that "Forward an English" by Erlangga, for Twelfth Grade Vocational School Students course book largely fulfills 67.90% of the BSNP criteria for standard course books in terms of content feasibility. Concerning the presentation feasibility, the coursebook adequately addresses approximately 66.67% of the relevant categories. Therefore, based on the evaluation following BSNP's rubric assessment, it can be deduced that the book serves as a SUFFICIENT resource.

Abstract

In discourse analysis, speech was defined as a form of communication involving the production and expression of spoken language. In this study, researchers used spoken language, namely speech. This study aims to discover the types of lexical cohesion in Joe Biden’s speech in Philadelphia. The researchers applied Brian Paltridge’s theory, which divides lexical cohesion into six types: antonymy, collocation, synonymy, repetition, meronymy, and hyponymy. The qualitative method was used to carry out this study. The data collection method is observation with a note-taking technique by watching and listening to the data source. The analyzing data method is identification with an identity technique by classifying the data that have been collected. Results of this study, the researchers found 20 data related to the forms of lexical cohesion. There are 7 data containing antonymy, 1 data containing collocation, 3 data containing synonymy, and 9 data containing repetition. Repetition is a strategy of lexical cohesion that Joe Biden employed frequently to emphasize his points in each line of his statements. The researchers did not find the data related to meronymy and hyponymy, because there were no data related to part of a whole or no data showing a relationship between general and specific.

Abstract

Writing is the process to organize and formulate the ideas into a written text. Writing plays a crucial role in language learning. Writing has challenges for many students ; most students find it  difficult to express their ideas in writing process. Then, students have little motivation in following the lesson. Therefore, the teachers are anticipated to utilize a teaching mehod that can overcame the problems in writing. This study aimed to find out the effectiveness of Think Pair Share method combined with picture series to improve students’ writing skill for tenth grade at MA Masalikil Huda Tahunan, Jepara. The method used a quasi experimental design with the non-equivalent control group.  The data were collected through test in the form of essay test. The population of this study was tenth-grade students at MA Masalikil Huda Tahunan, Jepara. They were two classes namely XIPA as experimental class and XIPS as control class which consisting of 25 students. As a result, the average score of students in experimental was 78.16 whereas in control group was 70.36. The t-test analysis revealed that Sig. (2-tailed) was 0.01 which was less than 0.05. It can be inferred that the use of Think-Pair-Share method combined with picture series was effective towards students’ writing skill.

Abstract

Discourse is the practical application of language in particular contexts of society, whereas language is the mechanism of communication that humans apply to communicate meaning.Conjunction is a cohesive device that is not solely focused on the semantics of grammar, claim (Halliday and Hasan, 1976). linguistic components that appear sequentially but unrelated to other, structural ways. Several types will be discussed such as Additive, adversative, causal, and temporal are the different forms of conjunctions. The design of This research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative because This research using sentences and there is no calculation in them, this research is also in the form of paragraphs, so the researcher uses a qualitative method. This study focuses on the functions of conjunctions in sentences in Jimmy Fallon The tonight show with Gigi Hadid. The researchers used check list to collect the data observation method. Result and Discussion 1. Additive 2. Adversative 3. Causal Conjunctions serve as links between individual words, phrases and sentences. Additive, temporal, causal, and adversative are the four conjunctions identified in this study. These conjunctions function to join comparable words, combine sentences with related contexts, and connect sentences in paragraphs.

Abstract

Jennie, a popular star with millions of fans, used fictional language in an exclusive interview with ELLE magazine. She used figurative language to attract attention, bring personal stories to life, and create profound impressions. Jennie's unique speaking style blended fictional meaning and authentic self-expression, solidifying her position as a modern pop icon. This study used qualitative-descriptive research to accurately describe the object and explain the data in a systematic and thorough manner. The data for this study came from Jennie from Blackpink's YouTube channel, Elle. The documentary technique was used to collect data, which was applied to written or visual materials in order to identify certain qualities of the material, such as textbooks, speeches, ads, or any of these. Based on data taken by researchers, they found that there were 25 sentences, 5 of which contained figurative language and 20 of which did not contain it. In 5 sentences containing figurative language, there were 1 sentences using hyperbole, 3 with metaphors and 1 with repetitions. Jennie effectively used metaphors, personification, idioms, and repetitions to convey her emotions and reality in an interview, creating captivating images and a concise message.

Abstract

Conversation analysis focuses on how different people handle their ordinary conversational experiences. This study's aim was to determine the different turn-taking methods used by Ellen and Will Smith on their YouTube channel, The Ellen Show. The researchers applied Stenstrom's hypothesis. This idea distinguishes three categories. Specifically, taking the turn (starting up, taking over, interrupting), holding the turn (Filled pause and verbal filled, silent pause, lexical repetition), and yielding the turn (prompting, appealing, and giving up). The researchers used a qualitative approach to describe the turn- taking strategies that included in the conversation, In this study, researcher used document or content analysis as a type of content research analytical research methods, because the data or content of this research is in the form of videos words and sentences spoken from the Will Smith Full Interview with Ellen on the The Ellen Show YouTube Channel. The result showed there are several types found in the conversation such as: starting with the most dominant taking the turn (clean start 1, Link 1, uptakes 1, alert 3, metacomments 5), holding the turn (Silent pause 2, filled pause 1, repitition 1). and there is no Data of yielding the turn.

Abstract

The perlocutionary speech acts are an important part of speech acts to find out the response of the effect given by the communicator.The purpose of this study was to identify the types of perlocutionary speech acts and the dominant type of perlocutionary speech acts in President Joe Biden's remarks when talking about terrorist attacks between Israel and Palestine. This research was designed using a qualitative approach by analyzing through three stages, namely data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that Joe Biden's remarks contained all types of perlocutionary speech acts such as expressive, directive, representative, declarative and commissive with 51 data found. Joe Biden's remarks included 7 expressive acts, 6 directive acts, 5 representative acts, 11 declarative acts, and 6 commissive acts, with declarative acts being the most dominant at 11 instances.
