Abstract

Vocabulary plays a crucial function  in learning English because it connects the four language abilities: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. As a result, teaching approaches are required to effectively teach vocabulary. Students can increase their vocabulary using a variety of platforms, including the Memrise app. The goal of this research is to examine the effectiveness of using the memrise program for improving second-grade vocabulary knowledge at SMPIT Alfityah Pekanbaru. This study employed a quantitative experimental method design with a sample size of 51 eighth-grade students from SMPIT AlFityah Pekanbaru. The study was separated into two categories: control and experimental. Students will initially take a pre-test to check their first vocabulary mastery. The follow-up test was given after four treatment sessions in which the Memrise functioned as a supplement in the experimental class. The data in this research were analyzed using SPSS 25 and the Independent Sample T-Test. The study's findings revealed a p-value of 0.000. The value was 0.000, or less than 0.05. As a result, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. In other words, using the Memrise app can help eighth-grade students at SMPIT Al Fityah Pekanbaru improve their vocabulary.

A descriptive qualitative study on teacher and student interactions was used in this reasearch. Several data collection procedures were followed in order to analyze the data. To collect the data, the researchers conducted interviews, field notes, and observation. The classroom interactions were observed by the researcher to know the interactions between the teacher and the students (as the participants) in teaching and learning English. The findings demonstrated how the instructor actively engaged the students in the process of learning. Because the students cooperated in joining the lesson and the teacher used a teaching strategy to make the content easier to learn, the activities in the classroom went off without a hitch. The majority of the interactions, it was discovered, were arranged by the teacher. Finding the right teaching strategy and approach is crucial if you want your students to become more confident in their ability to strike up conversations. In addition, the instructor needs to practice effective time management while using a certain teaching strategy.

Abstract

This study focuses on the development of a spinning wheel media  for English vocabulary learning, employing the systematic Borg and Gall Research and Development (R&D) model. The spinning wheel media is designed to enhance vocabulary acquisition and address the vocabulary poverty prevalent among students. The research methodology follows the stages outlined in the Borg and Gall R&D model, including needs assessment, media development, expert validation, pilot testing, and final evaluation. Throughout these phases, data are collected, analyzed, and iteratively refined to ensure the efficacy and validity of the spinning wheel media. Initial findings from the needs analysis reveal More than 70% (21 out of 30 students) at MTs Nurul Huda Ngadirejo demonstrate shortcomings in vocabulary, affecting their proficiency in learning English. To address this issue, it's imperative to integrate additional interactive learning tools to stimulate students' engagement and elevate their participation levels. Drawing upon pedagogical theories and instructional design principles, the spinning wheel media is developed to engage students actively in vocabulary learning. The result of expert validation media and material achieved 82.55 and 95%  as a result spinning wheel media is appropriate for usage in vocabulary learning. The result of students satisfaction analysis indicates that spinning wheel is effective to increase students interest in learning vocabulary.

Abstract

A gesture of positive politeness is intended to make up for the addressee's positive face, which expresses his persistent desire to have his needs (or the behaviors, assets, or values they create) accepted as acceptable. In order to partially satisfy the addressee's want, redress entails communicating that one's own needs (or some of them) are analogous to those wants in certain aspects.A type of positive attitude based on the polite theory proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) is analyzed and described using qualitative descriptive methods. After this analysis, the collected data are analyzed using the response theory proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) to show the listener's response to the positive attitude applied in the interview. From the analysis the researcher found six data that show positive politeness.

Abstract

Translation is the replacement of text in one language (SL) with equivalent text in another language (TL). Shifts are unavoidable throughout the translation process because many words and phrases move due to the various linguistic systems of the source and target languages. This study aims to examine the different forms of translation shifts and the most prevalent shift observed in English to Indonesian Song Lyric Titled Fix You by Coldplay at the noun phrase level. The research approach is classified as content analysis. The results of this study reveal that seventeen translation shifts occur in the translation of the song lyrics. According to the study's findings, the most common translation shift of a noun phrase in a song lyric is structure shift, followed by unit shift, level shift, and class shift. Meanwhile, the lyric does not mention the intra-system shift. This research is expected to provide insight into language training, particularly translating song lyrics, which can inform translation practices and contribute to the improvement of language skills.

Abstract

This research aimed to identify the grammatical cohesion devices in Steve Harvey’s speech, using a discourse analysis approach. The theory for this study was based on Halliday and Hasan's (1976) theory. Data collection was conducted through observation, involving watching, listening, and transcribing the speeches. The data was then analyzed using an identification method, where the context of each phenomenon was described, and the data was categorized according to the theory. The analysis revealed 10 references, 1 substitution, 1 ellipsis, and 3 conjunctions in the speech. The results indicate that the use of references dominates the speech delivered by the speaker, reflecting a strong reliance on this cohesive device to maintain clarity and continuity. Conjunctions are the second most frequently used grammatical elements, playing a crucial role in connecting various pieces of information and ideas throughout the speech. This frequent use of conjunctions helps to ensure that the speech flows smoothly and logically from one point to the next. Overall, these findings highlight the importance of cohesive devices in effective communication, particularly in public speaking. Understanding the role of these components can provide valuable insights into how successful speeches are constructed.
