Abstract

Background: The challenge of expediting the histology preparation process without compromising quality has led to exploring microwave technology. However, it is yet to be determined whether heating plates are effective. Investigating the potential of enhancing histology preparation processing is an area of interest. Methods: This experimental study utilised a post-test-only control group design approach using forty-five specimens of Wistar white rat (Rattus norvegicus) hepatic tissues, which were divided into nine hotplate treatment groups. The groups were exposed to temperatures of 60°C (H1), 70°C (H2), and 80°C (H3) for 3 minutes (T1), 5 minutes (T2), and 10 minutes (T3), respectively. The tissues were fixed using FineFix solution and processed for routine staining, following the methodology described in the previous study. The quality of the preparation was assessed by scoring the results of Haematoxylin-Eosin staining for each treatment. The scores were analysed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests to determine differences between the treatment groups. Results: The results showed that each treatment scored two after a 3-minute exposure to different temperature treatments. The treatment with a temperature of 80°C for 3 minutes (H3T1) showed the best results. Conclusion: It is known that heat increases the fixation rate, but at high temperatures, the fixation rate decreases.

Abstract

Background: Plastic waste pollution in coastal areas, primarily caused by direct disposal into the sea without proper management, has serious consequences for both the environment and coastal communities. This research seeks to assess respondents’ knowledge, attitudes, and behavioral practices related to the management of household plastic waste in the coastal area of Tanjung Unggat Subdistrict. Methods: This research employed a descriptive cross-sectional design using survey and interview methods. The sampling technique applied was total sampling, encompassing the entire population of 41 housewives. The study was conducted in RT 02 RW 05, Tanjung Unggat Subdistrict, Bukit Bestari District, Tanjungpinang City, Indonesia. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. Results: The findings revealed that 92.7% of respondents demonstrated a high level of knowledge regarding household plastic waste management. In terms of attitudes, 87.8% of respondents expressed agreement with household plastic waste management practices. However, in the aspect of practice, 68.3% of respondents were categorized as having low implementation levels in managing household plastic waste. Conclusion: This study highlights a clear gap between respondents’ adequate knowledge and positive attitudes, and their relatively low levels of actual practice. These findings suggest the need for more intensive educational interventions to promote behavioral change in household plastic waste management.

Abstract

Background: Dysmenorrhea is a prevalent gynecological problem among adolescent girls, often influenced by modifiable lifestyle factors such as diet, sleep quality, and nutritional status. This study aimed to examine the association of junk food consumption, sleep quality, and nutritional status with dysmenorrhea among female students. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 169 female students at SMKN 1 Palu, Indonesia. Data were collected using validated questionnaires: Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) for junk food intake, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) for sleep quality, and BMI-for-age for nutritional status. Dysmenorrhea severity was assessed using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Data were analyzed using Chi-square and Spearman tests. Results: The findings revealed that poor sleep quality was significantly associated with dysmenorrhea (p = 0.038), while junk food consumption (p = 0.646) and nutritional status (p = 0.426) showed no significant association. Conclusion: Sleep quality emerged as a modifiable determinant of dysmenorrhea, suggesting that improving sleep hygiene may help alleviate menstrual pain among adolescents. Integrated health promotion strategies that combine sleep education and balanced nutrition are recommended for adolescent reproductive health programs.
