Abstract

This study examines the role of Bu Nyai Nusantara (BNN) in transforming Islamic education within pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) in Madura, Indonesia. Utilizing a qualitative, phenomenological approach, the research explores the challenges faced by female leaders in traditionally male-dominated institutions, the strategies they employ to navigate and transform gender roles, and their unique contributions to Islamic education and broader societal change. The study draws on theories of women's educational leadership, particularly the model proposed by Grogan and Shakeshaft (2010), and Islamic feminism to analyze the experiences of Bu Nyai. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis across four districts in Madura. The findings reveal that Bu Nyai faces multifaceted challenges stemming from cultural norms, religious interpretations, and societal expectations. However, they have developed innovative strategies, including pursuing higher education, embracing technology, and building collaborative networks, to overcome these obstacles. The research highlights Bu Nyai's significant contributions to modernizing Islamic education, redefining religious authority, and advancing gender equality. Their leadership approach aligns with Grogan and Shakeshaft's five dimensions: leadership for change, instructional leadership, spiritual leadership, relational leadership, and balanced leadership. This study contributes to the understanding of women's leadership in religious educational contexts and demonstrates how educational leadership theories can be applied and adapted in diverse cultural settings. The findings have implications for educational policies and practices in Islamic institutions and provide insights into the potential of women's leadership as a catalyst for social change in traditional religious contexts.

Abstract

This article examines the issue of humanism in the new kalām discourse, which has been discussed by ‘Abd Al-Jabbar Al-Rifai in most of his writings, he has started from a critical review of the kalām-tauhidī paradigm that affects the production of religious knowledge and is only oriented towards proving and defending religious beliefs. This article shows that the orientation of the new kalām is to reveal the beauty of religion and highlight its human values. The meaning of humanism that al-Rifai has discussed, which he calls faith-based humanism, is different from the concept of humanism developed in the Western context. This article aims to present and discuss the issue of humanist values in the new kalām discourse, especially from the perspective of al-Rifai as its most important theorist. The research has used an analytical descriptive approach, collecting data and information obtained from Al-Rifai's books related to the subject matter. This article has reached several conclusions, the most important of which are, first, that the relationship between humans and their God in classical kalām discourse is based on fear and slave psychology, according to Al-Rifai this kind of relationship can lead to what he calls the theology of slavery, he then tries to present a new relationship based on a concept where human attitudes are more positive interactions based on love.. Secondly, an important methodology in uncovering humanist values from religious texts according to Al-Rifai will not succeed except by critically reviewing the history of religious thought, reading critical analysis of religious texts, and presenting turāts from different perspectives and visions, such as reading and re-understanding the names and attributes of God, not in the traditional way, but in a humanitarian-oriented way

Abstract

This paper critically analyzes Indonesia's discourse on identity politics through Ibn Khaldun's theory of asabiyah (social solidarity). It aims to diagnose issues surrounding the weaponization of identity for political ends that have polarized society and eroded unity. A qualitative approach scrutinizes empirical evidence on divisive identity politics before theoretically examining it via asabiyah. Recent history shows Indonesian identity politics exacerbating intergroup intolerance and discrimination by fracturing communities along ethnic and religious lines for power consolidation, violating asabiyah's emphasis on cohesion. However, moderate identity politics can enable democratic representation of societal diversity. Moving forward requires recalibrating identity discourse by fostering the unifying religious and nationalist solidarity underpinning asabiyah to balance inherent identity affiliations with preserving pluralistic national harmony.

Abstract

This study examines the contextualization of the interpretative symbolic meaning of the "Almari Meteng" tradition in marriage as family education in Mancon Village, Wilangan District, Nganjuk Regency, East Java. Using qualitative field research methods, including interviews and documentation, the study explores the symbolic values embedded in this tradition and their relevance to family education. The findings reveal that the Almari Meteng tradition, involving the groom bringing household items to the bride's family, carries rich symbolic meanings related to family resilience, gratitude, social values, and strengthening relationships. The tradition reflects important family education values such as harmony, respect, mutual cooperation, spirituality, health awareness, and children's education. The study employs theoretical frameworks including symbolic interactionism, ritual theory, and Bourdieu's concept of habitus to analyze the tradition's social and cultural implications. While facing challenges from modernization and urbanization, the Almari Meteng tradition demonstrates adaptability and continues to play a significant role in preserving cultural identity and instilling important values in family life. This research contributes to understanding the dynamics of local cultural practices in the context of social change and their potential for sustainable cultural preservation.

Abstract

This study examines the optimization of societal fiqh understanding within the Banjar community, focusing on the bahilah practice related to the payment of fidyah for missed prayers and fasting by the deceased in the Pahuluan community, South Kalimantan. The purpose of this research is to analyze how bahilah—a local tradition for fulfilling religious obligations for the deceased—is conducted and to understand its legal implications within the framework of Islamic law. The research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. Data was collected from the Pahuluan community to gather primary insights into the practice of bahilah and the challenges faced by heirs in fulfilling fidyah obligations. The findings indicate that the practice of bahilah often involves the use of the concept of hilah (legal stratagem) to ease the burden on the heirs. However, this practice also raises issues, such as the validity of fidyah payments when the recipients do not meet the criteria of being impoverished, and the execution of grants that do not always comply with the essential requirements of Islamic law. The implications of this study highlight the need for increased community understanding of the proper implementation of bahilah in accordance with Islamic legal principles, as well as the necessity for oversight and guidance from religious scholars or authorities to ensure that this tradition aligns with the applicable Sharia regulations.

Abstract

This study examines the resilience of Catholic migrant workers' marriages in South Malang, Indonesia, within a diverse socio-religious context. The research aims to explore the challenges faced by Catholic couples in maintaining long-distance marriages and to analyze the strategies they employ to preserve marital harmony. Utilizing a qualitative approach with phenomenological methods, this study involves in-depth interviews with two Catholic couples, one of whom works as a migrant worker. The results indicate that couples face dual challenges: economic pressures driving migration and the complexity of maintaining religious identity as a minority. Strategies employed include intensive communication, strengthening faith, and involvement in church communities. Analysis using "superdiversity" and "lived religion" theories reveals how couples negotiate their Catholic identity in a diverse social context. The discussion highlights the importance of contextual pastoral support and interfaith dialogue. In conclusion, the resilience of Catholic marriages in the context of migration and diversity requires complex negotiation between religious teachings, socio-economic realities, and personal interpretations, potentially contributing to broader social harmony.

Abstract

This ethnography study investigates the sociocultural significance of the Tonggoluan and Pusi’ death rituals that persist in Bolaang Mongondow society despite the threat of modernity. Current understanding ignores its ontological role in preserving the existence of Bolaang Mongondow, so this research aims to explain these traditions as a basis for identity formation and social reproduction through the lens of Victor Turner's symbolic anthropology. Using a rigorous ethnographic field study, data was collected through in-depth interviews and observation of six elders in Bolaang Mongondow. These findings reveal that Tonggoluan graves encapsulate the eternal spiritual connection between living and deceased ancestors. Its sacralization reflects a strong belief in a metaphysical realm that upholds the collective memory of this community. Meanwhile, wearing Pusi’ mourning clothes symbolizes sadness and passing down cultural values from generation to generation. This ritual also builds communal solidarity during mourning, reaffirming Bolaang Mongondow's identity. Essentially, these two traditions combine the temporary and the eternal through the creative reproduction of meaning, forming the basis of local existence. Therefore, maintaining this death ceremony amidst the erosion of modern culture is very important to ensure the continuity of the unique identity of this indigenous community. This encourages a deeper global appreciation of the role of death rituals in strengthening the cultural vitality of the Bolaang Mongondow community group.

Abstract

This study endeavors to explore the multifaceted nature of women's double burden within the family framework, delving into the intersection of cultural norms, discriminatory practices, and gender perspectives that contribute to gender injustice. Employing a library research methodology encompassing books, articles, journals, news, and papers, this research adopts descriptive-analytical methods coupled with gender-focused approaches. The findings underscore a prevalent societal phenomenon where one gender shoulders a disproportionately heavier workload compared to the other, leading to a situation of double burden. Despite contemporary perceptions normalizing women's participation in the workforce, cultural constraints persist, perpetuating the dual responsibilities borne by women and perpetuating gender injustice. For women unencumbered by stringent cultural norms, barriers to employment persist due to various factors such as economic constraints and limited educational opportunities. To alleviate discrimination and mitigate double burden within households, several strategies emerge. First, dispelling the notion that work is solely a male domain is crucial. Second, fostering mutual agreements between spouses in distributing daily responsibilities can mitigate discrimination and uphold equitable commitments. Additionally, the establishment of women's advocacy groups in both rural and urban settings is pivotal. Social campaigns emphasizing equality play a vital role in eradicating injustice. Enforcing stringent penalties for offenders coupled with preventive measures aims to raise awareness among potential perpetrators. Ultimately, addressing women's double burden necessitates societal efforts to eliminate discrimination, fostering household harmony, and nurturing prosperity. Embracing gender equality and redefining societal roles are imperative steps toward realizing a fairer, more equitable future within familial settings.
