Abstract

The low productivity of lettuce is caused by the declining quality of soil, both physically, chemically, and biologically. Improving production can be achieved through the proper application of organic fertilizers to enhance soil fertility. This study aimed to determine the effect of various concentrations of eco enzyme derived from soft fruit peels on the growth and yield of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) of the Grand Rapid variety. The research was conducted in February in Sukadami Village, South Cikarang District, Bekasi Regency. The method used was an experimental design arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with a single factor, consisting of 8 treatments and 4 replications. The treatments included: C0 (control), C1 (2.5 ml/L), C2 (5 ml/L), C3 (7.5 ml/L), C4 (10 ml/L), C5 (12.5 ml/L), C6 (15 ml/L), and C7 (commercial eco enzyme at 10 ml/L). The results showed that the application of various eco enzyme concentrations did not significantly affect plant height, number of leaves, root length, or fresh plant weight based on the F-test at the 5% level. However, descriptively, treatment C6 (15 ml/L) produced the highest values across all parameters. The highest plant height at C6 was 9.43 cm (7 DAS), 15.70 cm (14 DAS), and 23.15 cm (21 DAS). The highest number of leaves was also observed in C6 at 13.86 leaves (28 DAS). Mean root length was 17.99 cm, fresh weight 36.14 g, leaf area 214.17 cm², and root weight 2.54 g. Eco enzyme at 15 ml/L showed potential to improve lettuce growth descriptively, although not statistically significant. Keywords: eco enzyme, soft fruit, lettuce

Abstract

This study reveals that the development of a butterfly garden as a post-oil palm plantation land use strategy in Tangkahan holds significant ecological and social potential. Observations indicate a clear difference in butterfly species composition between the garden area and the former plantation, with a moderate diversity index and low similarity index. These findings underscore the importance of mosaic habitat management to enhance species diversity. Several host and nectar plants were identified, including Citrus sp., Ageratum conyzoides, Chromolaena odorata, and Lantana camara, which support a lifecycle-based garden design. Community perception was generally positive, and chi-square analysis showed that public support transcended age, education, and occupation. The garden is zoned into three key areas: conservation core, education zone, and buffer zone, covering a 100 x 100 meter area. With construction progress reaching 40%, the integration of ecological and social elements must continue to ensure long-term sustainability of conservation efforts in the region. Keywords: butterfly garden, biodiversity, sutainable conservative, garden zoning, host and nectar planting

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of auxin soaking and planting spacing on the growth and yield of yam bean (Pachyrhizus erosus L.). The experiment was conducted in Paya Pasir, Medan Marelan, North Sumatra, from March to July 2025, using a factorial Randomized Block Design (RBD) with two factors: auxin soaking duration (0 hours, 1 hour, 2 hours) and planting spacing (20×20 cm, 20×25 cm, 20×30 cm), each with three replications. The results showed that auxin soaking had a significant effect on vine length at 3 weeks after planting (WAP), whereas planting spacing had no significant effect on all measured parameters. The interaction between the two factors significantly affected vine length, tuber weight per sample, tuber weight per plot, and brix value. The best combination was obtained from treatment P1J1 (1 hour soaking and 20×25 cm spacing), producing the highest tuber weight per plot (574 g). These findings indicate that a combination of moderate auxin dosage and close planting spacing can enhance the productivity of yam bean. Keywords: jicama, auxin, planting spacing, growth, yield

Abstract

In Indonesia, numerous reports indicate a decline in the population of the oil palm pollinating insect (SPKS) Elaeidobius kamerunicus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). The parasitic nematode Elaeolenchus parthenonema has not yet been investigated as a potential agent contributing to this SPKS population decline. This research aims are to determine the presence of parasitic nematodes in SPKS populations from Simalungun Regency and Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra Province, and to understand the life cycle of these parasitic nematodes. The parasitic nematode E. parthenonema was found, with a low infestation severity per individual SPKS: 1.9 nematodes from Simalungun and 4.94 nematodes from Deli Serdang. Juvenile nematodes (J2, J3) and adults were found in the body cavities of male and female of SPKS imagoes. J2 and J3 were commonly observed in the body cavity, while adults were rarely found. The life cycle of E. parthenonema nematodes begins with J3 exiting from SPKS imagoes and moving to the male oil palm inflorescence to infect the last instar larvae and pupae of SPKS. J3 undergoes two successive molts to become an adult nematode. E. parthenonema is parthenogenetic, so no male nematodes were found. Adult nematodes produce eggs, which then hatch into J1, remaining within the parent’s body. J2 and J3 move out into the SPKS body cavity, consume host’s organ and continuing the life cycle. Keywords: insect, pollinator, nematode, parasitic, oil palm

Abstract

Soybean production in Indonesia has not shown a satisfactory trend, compounded by drought problems that adversely affect plant growth and metabolism. One of the various solutions offered is the use of drought-resistant/tolerant soybean varieties. This study aims to examine how drought-resistant/tolerant varieties differ from drought-susceptible varieties in their morphophysiological response to drought. The study was conducted in a plastic house in Aras Kabu Village, Beringin Subdistrict, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra, using a randomised block design with two factors and three replicates. The first factor was soil moisture conditions, consisting of 80% field capacity (FC) and 40% FC. The second factor was the testing of the Grobogan and Dering varieties. The observation parameters consisted of the number of leaves and leaf K uptake. The results showed that there was a significant interaction between the use of varieties and drought conditions, where the Dering variety significantly reduced the number of leaves, while the Grobogan variety, which is susceptible to drought, increased leaf K uptake to survive. Keywords: soybean, drought, stress, varieties

Abstract

Eco-enzyme is a process that can be used to valorize organic waste (fresh vegetable, fruit peel waste), in which fermentation is added brown sugar and water and selective microorganisms are used, namely bacteria and yeast. In addition to enzymes that can help plant growth and development, there are also hormones that are involved and interact with enzymes. Plant metabolic rate. One of the plants that require enzymes and hormones in its growth and development is the Brassicaceae family, namely samhong mustard greens. This research was conducted at the SEAMEO BIOTROP greenhouse located at Jalan Raya Tajur Km 6, Pakuan, South Bogor Sub-district, Bogor City, West Java, Indonesia. The research was conducted from April 2022 to May 2022. The research method used is the experimental method, employing a Double Factor Randomized Block Design (RBD) with treatments consisting of eco-enzyme factor with 4 levels: b0 (AB mix (control)), b1 (EE 8 ml/L), b2 (EE 10 ml/L), and b3 (EE 12 ml/L) and coconut water factor with 3 levels: k1 (2 ml/L), k2 (4 ml/L) and k3 (6 ml/L). Observation data were analyzed by analysis of variance and further tested by Duncan's multiple range test at the 5% level. The results of the F test and DMRT test showed that the treatment combination b0ke (AB mix and coconut water 6 ml/L) gave the best results on all observation parameters (plant height, number of leaves, root length, and plant fresh weight). Keywords: AB Mix, coconut water, eco enzyme, samhong king

Abstract

Yellow leaf curl virus infection in chili pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) can significantly reduce crop yield. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of turmeric extract and NPK fertilizer doses on the incidence of yellow leaf curl virus in chili pepper plants. The research was conducted at the experimental field of Universitas Pembinaan Masyarakat Indonesia from June to August 2025 using a factorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with two factors: turmeric extract (0%, 10%, 15%, 20%) and NPK dosage (0, 3.3 g, 5 g, 6.6 g per plant), resulting in 16 treatment combinations. Disease incidence was observed from 2 to 9 weeks after transplanting. The results showed that the highest incidence occurred at weeks 3 and 8. The K3P0 treatment (high-dose turmeric without NPK) resulted in the lowest incidence rate at 11.2%, while K1P3 (low-dose turmeric + high NPK) showed the highest at 137.5%. Although ANOVA results revealed no statistically significant differences (p>0.05), descriptively, high-dose turmeric treatments reduced symptoms and spread of disease. These findings highlight turmeric's potential as an eco-friendly botanical agent for managing viral diseases in chili cultivation. Keywords: chili pepper, disease incidence, NPK, turmeric, yellow leaf curl virus

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of cow manure and NPK fertilizer, both individually and in combination, on the growth and yield of cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L.). The experiment was conducted using a factorial Randomized Block Design (RBD) with two factors: cow manure (0, 1, 2, and 3 kg/plot) and NPK fertilizer (0, 60, 80, and 100 g/plot), each replicated three times. The observed parameters included plant height, number of leaves, number of fruits per plant, total fruit weight per plot, and fruit length. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at the 5% significance level. The results showed that the interaction between cow manure and NPK fertilizer had no significant effect on all observed parameters. However, on average, the combination treatment of 2 kg cow manure and 100 g NPK fertilizer produced the best results across all growth and yield parameters of cucumber plants. Cow manure contributed to improving soil structure and fertility, while NPK fertilizer supplied essential macronutrients required by the plants. Keywords: Cucumis sativus L., cow manure, NPK fertilizer
