Abstract

This research aims to analyze the meaning and representation of emotions depicted on the covers of the “Seri Kenali Emosi” (Know Your Emotion Series) books, published by Tentang Anak. Adopting Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach, the study systematically analyzes the visual and textual signs present. The study’s core data consists of four specific book covers from the series, all release on July 23, 2022, a date chosen to align with National Children’s Day. Data collection involved both direct observation of these physical book covers, yielding concrete primary data, and a comprehensive literature review, where of relevant scholarly sources like books, journals, theses, and relevant websites. The analyzes involved identifying and categorizing visual and textual elements on each cover into Peirce’s three sign categories: icons (signs physically resembling their object), index (signs with a direct causal or existential links), symbols (signs whose meaning is based on convention). By applying this detailed semiotic analysis, this study investigates how three specific sign types work together to communicate complex emotional messages. The findings are expected to provide a comprehensive understanding of the semiotic strategies used in children’s book cover design, especially in depicting and communicating various emotional nuances effectively to young audiences and their parents.

Abstract

Textile crafts in South Sumatra have existed since the era of Sriwijaya and developed rapidly hundreds of years ago, particularly during the Palembang Sultanate period, one of which is batik preserved in the collection of the Balaputra Dewa Museum. The museum plays an important role as a medium for education, conservation, and cultural promotion at both national and international levels. The displayed collection serves as a means of cultural diplomacy that showcases the richness of South Sumatra’s art, history, and traditions to the outside world. South Sumatran batik holds a long historical value and experienced significant growth during the Palembang Sultanate era. The urgency of this research problem lies in the lack of academic documentation that elaborates on its aesthetic values, both intrinsic and extrinsic. As a cultural product, South Sumatran batik reflects the natural wealth, history, and culture of the local community. The research method used is qualitative with a descriptive approach. Data collection techniques include observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, and literature study to obtain information. The stages of data analysis involve data identification, data reduction, data analysis, and synthesis. The theoretical approaches employed are Stuart Hall’s representation theory and Jakob Sumardjo’s aesthetic theory to address the formulated research problems. The results of the study show that the batik collection at the Balaputra Dewa Museum generally features distinctive South Sumatran motifs that represent the natural environment, traditions, and belief systems of the local community. Thus, South Sumatran batik serves as a unique cultural identity with philosophical value, making it important to continuously preserve through scientific documentation, art education, and the active role of museums.

Abstract

Cultural posters serve as a primary medium for communicating the identity and values of Malay cultural heritage to the public. However, few in-depth studies have analyzed the changes in visual and formal aspects of posters over the years, particularly in the context of the Kenduri Seni Melayu in Batam, Riau Islands. This research aims to identify and analyze the development of visual and formal elements in the design of the “Kenduri Seni Melayu” posters from 2022 to 2024, as well as to formulate recommendations for enhancing their visual effectiveness. The study employs a qualitative approach with a non-experimental observational design. Official posters from 2022, 2023, and 2024 were analyzed by 54 Visual Communication Design (DKV) students after receiving preparatory training on DKV perspectives, descriptive analysis, and formal analysis. Data collection was conducted through a Google Form survey, covering the identification of color, typography, ornamentation, composition, balance, repetition, and grouping. The inclusion criteria required active DKV students who had participated in the training session. Data were thematically analyzed and tabulated by year. The results indicate significant developments in layout, color use, typography, and the diversity of Malay cultural ornaments. The 2022 poster tended to be asymmetrical and heavily populated with dancer elements; the 2023 poster introduced more balanced compositions with clearer groupings; and the 2024 poster highlighted systematic visual structures, ornament harmony, and emphasis on guest star figures. All posters consistently displayed Malay motifs, although variations in ornament “density” remained evident. Overall, the “Kenduri Seni Melayu” posters from 2022 to 2024 demonstrate a positive evolution in visual structure, layout, and cultural identity consistency. Further improvements are needed in ornament arrangement and information grouping to optimize the effectiveness of visual communication in future designs

Abstract

The rapid development of technology and intense exchange of information has caused the younger generation to be easily influenced by outside cultures. This has resulted in the traditional food of Kraton Yogyakarta, which is full of philosophy and deep cultural values, is threatened to be forgotten by the current generation, especially Generation Z in Yogyakarta. The purpose of this research and design is to focus on efforts to preserve traditional food through board game media integrated with Augmented Reality technology to educate the importance of traditional cuisine as a regional cultural identity. The design method uses the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model, which consists of needs analysis, game conceptual design, prototype development, trial implementation, and effectiveness evaluation. This method was chosen because it provides a systematic structure in designing an effective gaming experience. The results of the study indicate that there is a crisis of knowledge regarding traditional culinary culture among Generation Z in Yogyakarta, caused by a lack of media that presents such content in a visually appealing and technologically relevant manner. The design results show that board games with Augmented Reality technology can create an interactive and immersive educational experience and increase Generation Z's understanding of the food philosophy of the Yogyakarta Palace. This research and design is expected to contribute to the development of interactive, immersive, and sustainable educational media.

Abstract

Rejang Inyeng  is a sacred dance preserved in Tiyingan Village, Petang District, Badung Regency. Performed by young girls before menstruation during the Purnama Kapat and Purnama Kedasa ceremonies, the dance functions as a ritual to welcome deities. However, its continuity faces challenges due to limited academic documentation and a hiatus during the pandemic. This study aims to represent the symbolic meaning of Rejang Inyeng  through documentary film as a cultural preservation strategy. The research employed a qualitative approach by combining Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotics, visual ethnography, and the Save the Cat narrative model. Data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, literature studies, and documentation, while information tracing was guided by the concept of Catur Guru and the Glass Box method. Analysis was conducted by linking signifiers, such as dance movements and performers, with signifieds such as purity, sanctity, and cultural regeneration, further deepened through the concept of Dasa Aksara. The findings indicate that the documentary effectively represents the symbolism of Rejang Inyeng  in a communicative way, serving not only as a visual archive but also as an educational and cultural transmission medium. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of Saussurean semiotics with Dasa Aksara, the application of Catur Guru in data exploration, and the adaptation of Save the Cat within a sacred documentary.

Abstract

Acculturation is a significant phenomenon in cultural development that occurs when two or more cultures interact and influence each other. One enduring example of acculturation in Bali is the use of kepeng coins, locally known as Pis Bolong, which originally functioned as a medium of exchange in traditional economic systems. Over time, kepeng coins underwent a substantial transformation, particularly serving as ritual instruments in Hindu religious ceremonies. The urgency of this study lies in the decreasing availability of kepeng coins in the modern era and their gradual replacement by the rupiah, which risks weakening future generations’ understanding of this cultural symbol. To address this issue, the research employed a literature study method by reviewing relevant books, academic journals, and visual documents. The objective of the study is to analyze the functional changes, symbolic meanings, and Chinese cultural visual elements preserved in kepeng coins. The findings reveal that kepeng coins have served multiple purposes, ranging from currency and markers of social status to offerings in rituals such as melasti, ngaben, and piodalan, as well as materials for crafts with both aesthetic and economic value. Visual elements such as the square hole and Chinese inscriptions symbolize cosmological concepts of earth and heaven, which were reinterpreted within Balinese Hindu traditions. In conclusion, this study emphasizes that kepeng coins represent Sino-Balinese acculturation, reflecting cultural resilience while contributing to the preservation of Balinese identity in the face of modernization.

Abstract

Srikaya cake is one of Palembang's culinary heritage with a sweet taste, followed with a soft texture made of coconut milk, eggs, sugar, and pandan. Despite having a historical value along with a strong culture, Srikaya cake's popularity among the younger generation has actually declined due to a shift in consumption patterns that's heading towards modern culinary trends, such as dessert boxes, bubble tea, and international pastries. In addition to that, the limitations of innovating the marketing, branding, and visual identity has made Srikaya cake less competitive compared to other modern culinary products that are more aggressively promoted on digital platforms. This research solves this problem by designing a visual promotional media that targets the younger generation with the main media in the form of Product Display Panel (PDP), Mini PDP, and packaging variants developed in three tiers consisting of standard, premium, and super premium. The design method applied in this research is Design Thinking, which involves the stages of emphaty towards users, focused problem definition, creative ideas, prototyping, and a testing to receive feedbacks from the target audience. The objectives of the design are to enhance the visual appeal and the perceived value of Srikaya cake, building the brand identity that is relevant to the young generation, and also to expand the promotional reach through both offline and online channels. The expected results are to increase the buying interest, better aesthetic acceptance, and to contribute in preserving the Palembang's traditional culinary heritage through marketing solutions that are adaptive towards the modern market dynamics

Abstract

Film posters serve as a medium of visual communication that functions not only as a promotional tool but also as a cultural text representing social realities and aesthetic values. The urgency of this research is the film poster of Ganjil Genap by Bene Dion Rajagukguk, which features visual elements. This phenomenon shows that film posters can be an important object of study to understand how visual elements construct meaning and communication messages. This study aims to analyze the visual elements in the Ganjil Genap film poster using Peirce’s semiotic approach. The research employs a qualitative method and is conducted through four stages of design review: description, formal analysis, interpretation, and evaluation. In the descriptive stage, all visual elements of the poster are described in detail, including illustration, color, typography, and layout. The formal analysis stage examines how these elements are technically arranged to create visual harmony that attracts audience attention. The interpretation stage applies Peirce’s triadic concept of signs icon, index, and symbol to identify explicit and implicit meanings contained within each visual element. The final evaluation stage synthesizes the overall meanings derived from interpretation and assesses the effectiveness of the poster in conveying its message. The findings indicate that the Ganjil Genap film poster functions not merely as a promotional medium but also as a form of social and emotional communication. Through its carefully designed visual symbols and communicative strategies, the poster becomes a meaningful medium of visual communication capable of engaging audiences on a deeper emotional and cultural level.
