Abstract

Cardboard furniture has emerged as a lightweight, easy-to-assemble, and efficient alternative for temporary use. However, the structural limitations of cardboard, particularly at panel joints, make it susceptible to deformation and damage due to external forces. This study aims to design and develop fittings as joint components to optimize the stability and strength of cardboard furniture. The fittings were developed using 3D printing technology with the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) method, utilizing a MakerBot Replicator 2 machine and MakerBot PLA filament. In this study, two fitting designs were developed, namely symmetric and asymmetric designs, which were then compared to determine the most optimal design. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was used to evaluate the structural strength of both designs. The results showed that the symmetric design exhibited better resistance to tensile forces than the asymmetric design. In the symmetric design, the ultimate tensile strength (62 MPa) was reached at a tensile force of 46 N, while the asymmetric design only reached 44 N. Based on these findings, the symmetric design was selected as the foundation for developing 17 module variants, consisting of edge joints and corner joints with various configurations. These module variants enable diverse structural joint mechanisms in the assembly system of cardboard furniture and can also be applied to existing cardboard furniture as additional accessories to enhance its structural integrity.

Abstract

Kindergarten functions as a place that supports the development of early childhood as a whole, both regular and special needs. Children's development is the physical, intellectual, moral, and creative aspects of children to be ready to enter further education. However, in practice, the needs of early childhood have not been accommodated in educational facilities, such as in the case study of the Bunda Asuh Nanda Kindergarten interior space, Arcamanik branch, Bandung. The research method adapts two design thinking process models divided into problem (empathy and problem identification) and solution (ideation, prototype, and test) sections. It is supported by divergent and convergent thinking. These problems include the need for kindergarten spaces adapted to the 2020 Merdeka Belajar Curriculum, inclusive design for ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) level 1 students, and the lack of privacy in the principal's room. The solution offered is to design the kindergarten space by using learning activities and curriculum while adapting to the needs of regular and special children. The concept is minimalist, modular and multi-sensory. The application of the concept is in the form of table positioning according to children's talent groups, storage locker facilities for each child, multi-sensory play areas, provision of facilities for students with special needs such as ASD corner, and separating the principal's room which is still combined with the Kindergarten B room by providing folding partitions to separate them as needed. The design thinking process requires two-way communication between the designer and the client and an iterative process to reach a design agreement.

Abstract

Indonesia has yet to ratify the 1951 Refugee Convention and the 1967 Protocol, which has led to various challenges for refugees in Indonesia, ranging from uncertain legal status to limited access to basic services. The conventional approaches offered through available solutions often fail to address and meet the needs of refugees. Mental health issues among refugees in Indonesia, particularly among young refugees, have become a major concern, stemming from traumatic experiences faced in their home countries, during the transition to transit countries like Indonesia, challenges in adapting to new environments, and the rejection experienced due to negative stigma. Conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health disorders are common, yet access to mental health support remains severely limited. Furthermore, the stigma surrounding mental health further hinders individuals like young refugees from seeking help. This results in young refugees losing motivation to continue their daily lives in transit countries like Indonesia. The Crafting Your Utopia through Paper Doll workshop aims to harness the strength of imagination and creativity among young refugees to inspire them to explore their potential and strengthen their vision for the future through paper doll activities (bepe-bepean). This workshop encourages participants to collaboratively build their ideal utopia. This utopia is not defined by beauty or sophistication but is an ideal vision created by the strength and self-potential, as well as the support gained from the diverse visions and abilities of young refugees. Through bepe-bepean and play activities, participants imagine their lives ten years into the future, projecting their potential and aspirations not only for themselves but also for their communities and environments. This collaborative process emphasizes the importance of creating an inclusive and supportive future, where each individual contributes their strengths to build a shared vision and become agents of change. This workshop utilizes a framework created for these activities called Utopia: Imagining and Creating, which combines the utopian approach as a method (Utopia as a method) for imaginative reconstruction of existing social orders. The framework consists of two steps: Imagining and Creating, and applies a co-creation method in the creation step. The workshop leverages the imagination and creative thinking of young refugees through collaborative and innovative approaches aimed at motivating them and reminding them of dreams that have been forgotten due to mental health challenges. The hope is that by motivating them and rekindling their dreams, young refugees can live meaningfully during their prolonged stay in Indonesia before their resettlement to third countries. Additionally, the utopian approach as a method aims to encourage critical reflection on the current conditions of young refugees, thereby opening up spaces for critique and alternative ideas on how the conditions of refugee communities should be shaped. Abstract

Design-Based Research (DBR) has emerged as a significant research paradigm to bridge the gap between theory and practice in educational innovation. This study employs a critical literature review to analyze the application of DBR in the context of educational product development, with a focus on Indonesia. The findings reveal that DBR offers a contextual, iterative, and collaborative approach, contrasting sharply with conventional linear design models. Key outcomes of DBR include not only practical educational products but also actionable design principles and contextual theories. The study identifies seven core characteristics of DBR: iterative processes, theory-practice integration, interdisciplinary collaboration, dual outputs (products and principles), continuous validation, a focus on underlying mechanisms, and professional reflection. In the Indonesian context, DBR facilitates the integration of local wisdom and cultural values into educational innovations, promoting sustainability and relevance. However, challenges such as resource intensity, power imbalances in collaboration, and methodological complexity remain. The study concludes with practical implications for policy, practice, and further research, advocating for DBR as a transformative methodology for developing context-sensitive educational innovations in diverse settings like Indonesia.

Abstract

Color is used by humans in various aspects of life, including fashion products, interiors, marketing, and so on. Color is a visual element used mainly in business and marketing as a driving factor for consumers to purchase a product. The modest fashion industry used global color trends to adapt to its products. Using the right colors can have certain effects, such as in the modest fashion industry, especially hijabs, colors can increase product sales and keep up with the trends. Buttonscarves, one of the pioneers of motif hijab brands in Indonesia, has very diverse hijab colors and limited editions, so it is interesting to research. This research uses a quantitative method by collecting hijab color data, and then sorting the color palet previously collected by year using Adobe Illustrator tools. The sorting results are processed using AI to obtain annual color trends used by Buttonscarves. The findings obtained were that Buttonscarves used neutral and earth-tone color trends in 2020 and 2021, meanwhile, there were additional types of pastel colors in 2022. It is hoped that this research on Buttonscarves color trends can provide color trends insight for owners of similar industries to achieve the same success.

Abstract

The film produced from nata de coco after the drying process is a thin sheet like paper so that the lamination technique is an effort to form a new performance of the material structure to become a material `like leather`. By considering the three main focuses of the structural requirements and properties of the material to be proposed (1) The effect of the number of layers and lamination arrangement patterns on the distribution of stress and tensile strain of the cellulose film sheet, (2) Form resistance, and (3) Elasticity, then the fulfillment of technical and mechanical aspects is needed when the creation of alternative leather materials is carried out by approaching the expected properties of leather materials on the product commodities that will be designed later. The focus of this research is to understand how the performance of bacterial cellulose film laminate material as vegan leather by considering three main focuses of the structural requirements and properties of the material to be proposed, and how to stimulate creative thinking in materials that motivate design through four components of experience (case study of bacterial cellulose film laminate material as vegan leather) This research was conducted with two stages of methods, where the first is a quantitative-experimental method in collecting material manufacturing data, the steps described in the initial stage are testing material samples through variable number of layers, and various technical treatments, to determine the parameters of elasticity and surface strain of the material required on the design object then the second is at the stage of designing the material or product concept with the Material Driven Design (MDD) method, The performance of this bacterial cellulose film laminate material is obtained the more layers of lamination will affect the strength of the material, and for the resistance of the form has been tested in the drying process of the material that is pressed and stretched until the surface is completely dry, while elasticity is not realized in the results of stretching the wet material to dry. The elasticity of the material is still questionable and is a proposal for further research, but from the results of the concept development based on the Vision of Material Experience and prediction of acceptance, the concept of molding vamp shoes is proposed for further development.

Abstract

The phenomenon of deterritorialization in the context of palace interiors constitutes a significant aspect that reflects the dynamic shift in material cultural identity, as exemplified by the guest chair in the Prabayaksa Pavilion of the Kasepuhan Palace, Cirebon. This furniture object demonstrates a process of detachment from its original meaning as a representation of the European Veranda Chair style, followed by the formation of a new identity within the symbolic framework of the palace. Drawing on Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s theory of deterritorialization and reterritorialization, this study examines how furniture as a material object undergoes shifts in meaning and function within a local power space. While the architectural, cosmological, and territorial aspects of the palace have been widely studied, research on the interior—particularly furniture as a means of constructing visual and cultural identity—remains limited. Therefore, this research is urgent in addressing the gap within historical interior studies, especially furniture analysis grounded in contemporary theory. This study employs a qualitative approach, using the ethnomorphological method, which combines ethnographic observation with morphological analysis to explore the form, structure, colour, and material of the chair. The findings reveal that the guest chair underwent a process of deterritorialization from its European colonial identity and reterritorialization as a symbolic artefact embedded within the identity of the Kasepuhan Palace. Thus, the chair functions not only as an interior element but also as a medium of representation for royal power and cultural continuity within the sacred space of the palace.
