Abstract

This research aims to examine the integration of Augmented Reality (AR) technology in mathematics learning in terms of the cognitive approach and the role of spatial visualization. The problem of low understanding of abstract mathematical concepts and weak student motivation to learn is an important background for the need for technology-based learning innovation. The method used in this research is a literature study by analyzing various scientific sources over the last ten years, both in the form of journals, books and relevant research reports. This study focuses on the use of AR in mathematics learning in relation to cognitive theories such as Cognitive Load Theory and Dual Coding Theory, as well as its contribution in improving students' spatial visualization abilities. The results of the study show that the use of AR can significantly increase understanding of mathematical concepts, learning motivation and student engagement. AR is also effective in conveying information multimodally which supports optimal information retention and processing. However, the effectiveness of AR implementation is highly dependent on teacher readiness, suitability of content, and infrastructure support. Therefore, the integration of AR in learning needs to be accompanied by teacher training and mature implementation strategies in order to be able to answer the challenges of mathematics learning in the digital era. Abstract

This study is a preliminary study that aims to describe the algebraic thinking process of students who teach linear programming. This study is a qualitative descriptive study. Subjects are grouped into three categories, namely high, medium, and low mathematical abilities. Data were obtained based on test results that were analyzed based on students' algebraic thinking processes. The results of this study indicate that students with high and medium abilities carry out algebraic thinking ability activities well. Starting from generalization, abstraction, modeling, dynamic thinking, and analytical thinking, as well as organization. The advantages of students with high mathematical abilities are being able to provide other strategies in solving the problems given. Meanwhile, students with low mathematical abilities are still weak in dynamic, analytical, and organizational thinking activities. One of the contributing factors is the lack of students' ability to represent what is known into mathematical models (inequalities), the use of mathematical symbols, and algebraic operations. The difficulties experienced by students affect students in solving linear programming problems related to the optimum solution material. Keywords: thinking process, algebraic thinking, linear programming

Abstract

This study aims to describe students’ thinking processes in solving geometry problems through verbal expressions: verbalization, self-explanation, and oral description. The participants were three university students who were asked to work on geometry tasks containing linguistic descriptions. Data were collected through video recordings, students’ written solutions, and think-aloud notes capturing their thinking processes. Data analysis followed three stages: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results show that all participants demonstrated strong verbalization skills by restating key information from the problem text and representing it through labels and annotations in their drawings. In the self-explanation aspect, the three students attempted to justify their solution steps through sequences of calculations, although the strategies they used were not entirely accurate. Regarding oral description, all participants were able to describe the triangle structure, point positions, and altitude lines, yet not all of them could consistently connect these visualizations with correct computational procedures. These findings affirm that students’ verbal expressions play an important role in revealing the structure of their thinking processes, especially in geometry problems that require integration between linguistic descriptions and spatial representations.
