Abstract

Bone graft is a tissue capable of promoting new bone formation, transplanted into damaged bone, either alone or in combination with other materials. From marine biodiversity, marine sponge can be one of the options as a biological material for bone graft uti-lisation. This review discusses the potential of marine sponge as bone graft in the formation of bone regeneration. Through sys-tematic review, articles were searched through PubMed, MDPI and Google Scholar databases and analysed. In total, 370 arti-cles were obtained from the initial search, but only 15 articles met the inclusion criteria, which showed the positive effect of ma-rine sponge in bone regeneration. It was concluded that marine sponge has great potential as a bone graft in the formation of bone regeneration, especially when combined with other biomaterials that have proven effective as graft materials.

Abstract

The prevalence of cleft lip and palate (CLP) and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) varies significantly across age ranges. Se-veral studies on TMD that may appear in CLP patients after undergoing treatment are still limited in Indonesia, especially in Ma-kassar. This study was intended to determine the incidence of TMD in adult CLP patients at Dental Hospital of Unhas. Quantita-tive research using the quota sampling method; CLP patient data was obtained at the Dental Hospital then the Fonseca ques-tionnaire was distributed to respondents who met the age criteria of equal or more than 16 years. Data were analysed using the Microsoft Office Excel 2021 program. The incidence of TMD occurred in 53% of respondents. The incidence of TMD was 60% in CP patients. The age of patients who experienced the most TMD was 21-25 years old (70%). The classification of TMD based on the Fonseca questionnaire is mild TMD (46.67%), moderate TMD (6.67%), and no TMD symptoms (46.67%). It was conclu-ded that there was an incidence of TMD in adult CLP patients.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the caries risk profile using the caries risk assessment (CRA) method in children aged 6-8 years in Gowa district with a lower middle economic background. A total of 67 children participated in this study, with a distribution bet-ween male gender 24 people and female gender 43 people. CRA showed that 13.43% of children were in the low risk category, 29.85% moderate risk, and 56.72% high risk. The main risk factors that contribute to increased caries risk include frequency of consumption of sweet foods, lack of fluoride use, poor oral hygiene, and low socioeconomic status. Caries prevalence showed a positive relationship with risk category, where in the high-risk group, 70% of children had at least one tooth with active caries. These results emphasize the importance of risk-based interventions through dental health education programs, increasing access to fluoride, and other caries prevention strategies, especially in groups of children with low socioeconomic backgrounds.

Abstract

Restoring function and occlusion in the management of bilateral mandibular parasymphysis fractures (BMPF) with open reduc-tion and internal fixation (ORIF) using miniplat and QuickFix. A 21-year-old male was referred for facial trauma following a traffic accident ±1 month ago. CT-scan radiographs revealed BMPF. The patient underwent ORIF using 3 miniplates with intermaxillary fixation using QuickFix. In this patient, BMPF caused malocclusion so that repositioning and fixation using miniplat and screws were carried out to restore the position of the bone and obtain a strong and stable fixation, and avoid stiffness of the mastica-tory muscles and joint function. It is concluded that the management of BMPF with ORIF restores function, occlusion and bone position to maintain immobilisation and stability, in order to support the ossification process in the fractured part.

Abstract

Irreversible pulpitis and root canal treatment (RCT) are conditions that can cause pain. Local anaesthesia is one of the ways to manage pain. However, pulpitis patients often experience anaesthetic failure despite using various types of anaesthetic agents. A 32-year-old woman came to RSGM Unpad with complaints of a large hole in the right lower back tooth. The examination showed that tooth 45 had asymptomatic irreversible pulpitis with normal apical tissue so it was necessary to do RCT. Before treatment, the patient was anaesthetised with buccal and intrapulpal infiltration using lidocaine 2%, epinephrine 1:80,000. It was concluded that the administration of 2% lidocaine epinephrine 1:80,000 before RCT in a patient with AIP performed quickly, efficiently, without any side effects. During treatment, the patient did not complain of pain and comfortably accepted each stage of treatment.

Abstract

Odontogenic cutaneus fistula (OCF) arises as a sequel of bacterial invasion of the tooth. Evidence from animal studies and se-veral trials suggests that honey has a potential role in the field of tissue engineering and regeneration. This article describes the management of OCF due to left mandibular abscess using honey as a wound dressing treatment. A 29-year-old woman was re-ferred to Hasanuddin University Dental and Oral Hospital for evaluation of a painful left facial swelling with spontaneous purulent drainage and limited mouth opening. The patient had a history of recurrent toothache since 10 days before. The patient was ad-mitted to the hospital and a tooth extraction was performed under local anaesthesia. The infected facial fistula was treated using honey as a wound dressing. After 12 weeks, tissue granulation and epithelisation were observed and the wound size was signi-ficantly reduced. It was concluded that the OCF management caused by mandibular abscess included observation and closed care, antibiotic therapy, surgical intervention, and honey as wound dressing.

Abstract

Assessment of mandibular growth status has been done using cephalometric radiographs by looking at cervical bone maturation. Recent studies suggest that this method is not good at identifying the final period of growth. In recent years, biomolecular re-search has been conducted to look at the potential of proteins as growth indicators. It is important to comprehensively understand the mandibular growth process in order to determine which proteins have the potential to be used as indicators. Mandibular growth is a complex biological process that is regulated by various proteins through various signalling pathways. The centre of growth is at the mandibular condyle which has a unique cartilage and plays a dual role as articular cartilage and growth plate. This review discusses the role of fibroblast growth factor receptor-3 (FGFR-3) in the mandibular growth process and its signalling pathways. The FGFR-3 was shown to act as a negative regulator of mandibular growth by reducing the proliferation and hypertrophic dif-ferentiation of chondrocytes in mandibular condylar cartilage. It is concluded that the regulation of FGFR-3 is localised due to pre-vious studies on condylar cartilage of experimental animals, so further research needs to be done to see the role of FGFR-3 in human mandibular growth.

Abstract

This systematic review discusses various cell culture techniques, growth media, growth factors and environmental factors that are often used on oral mucosal cells to obtain the most effective oral mucosal cell culture method. Based on the PRISMA state-ment, the search was conducted using three electronic databases, namely PubMed, Scopus, Ebsco Host for articles published in 2012-2022 using specific keywords. The search was limited to invitro research using cell culture, in English, full text, and human oral mucosal cells. Article quality assessment was conducted using the Risk of Bias Assessment Tool for Non-randomised Stu-dies (RoBANS). Eleven articles had good eligibility and met the inclusion criteria for analysis. It was concluded that keratino-cytes and fibroblasts for normal tissues, and OSCC for pathogenic tissues were most commonly used for oral mucosal cell cul-ture, while the widely used culture media were F medium and keratinocyte medium.

Abstract

Candy is a type of food that contains sugar which is high in calories. Candy consumption can lower the pH of saliva, which can trigger dental caries. Gambir (Uncaria gambir) is a type of plant that contains active compounds catechins and tannins, which can inhibit the colonisation of acid-causing bacteria in the oral cavity. This study aimed to determine the effect of gambir can-dy consumption on salivary pH; an experimental study with a pretest-posttest approach. The research subjects were 25 Sriwi-jaya University students, whose saliva samples were taken as much as 5 mL before and after consumption of candies containing gambier extract; using the spitting method and measured with a digital pH meter. Paired t-test was conducted for data analysis which showed that there was a significant increase in mean salivary pH before and after consuming gambir candy (p<0.05). It was concluded that consumption of candies containing gambir extract can maintain and increase salivary pH.
